Abstract

TRAINING FOR TOURISM AWARENESS GROUPS: MAKING TOURISM VILLAGE BROCHURES IN ENGLISH. The community service activity was conducted in the form of online training intended for representatives of tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis). Focusing on enabling the participants to create English brochures promoting their respective tourism villages, the rationale of conducting this training was to empower the participants to be able to advertise the potential of their respective tourism villages to foreigners. The training was conducted in seven sessions from 6 October 2021 up to 1 December 2021. The first session was on the principles of good brochures in terms of design, whilst the next six sessions were on how to write the sections of the brochure in English. The second session was on how to write about villages’ profiles and potentials. The third was on villages’ history and uniqueness. The fourth, fifth, and sixth were on various activities available for visiting tourists. The seventh or last session was the celebration of learning. In conclusion, the training was sufficiently successful despite the low attendance rate. Future programmes could be preceded with more sound needs analysis to ensure not only the relevance of the training materials but also the prospective participants;’ interests in joining such programmes.

Abstract

This study discussed internal conflicts experienced by Okonkwo, the main character, in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. The novel tells about Okonkwo’s life in Umuofia. He struggled to make a prosperous and dignified life, unlike his disgraceful late father, Unoka, and valued the Umuofia tradition and culture very highly. He grew up to be a strong man in his neighbourhood.  However, despite his strength and bravery, the biggest fear in his life was to fall and become weak resembling his father. Based on the main character’s experiences and environments, a psychological analysis was used to find out how someone’s experiences had shaped his way of thinking even his actions to make a decision. Therefore, this study focused on internal conflicts as a part of the psychological approach. The conflicts that examined were approach-avoidance and avoidance-avoidance conflicts where the decisions taken by Okonkwo could have both risks and opportunities (approach-avoidance) or only risks (avoidance-avoidance). To solve his internal conflicts, the main character should choose which decision that would give more opportunities or fewer risks.

Abstract

Though studies about role-plays may be frequent, studies specifically investigating the possible relation between role-plays and speaking anxiety may still be very rare, particularly in the Indonesian second/foreign (L2) context, despite anxiety being a quite widespread phenomenon among language learners. Hence, the present study was conducted to investigate Indonesian learners' extent of participation in role-play activities in an online English speaking class and learners’ and teachers' views about role-plays concerning speaking anxiety. The study employed a qualitative case study using online observations and interviews. The participants were 25 English education department learners and two teachers implementing role-plays. Through observations, the study found that role-plays were unable to make most of the learner participants voluntarily participate in class. Through interviews analysed using Thematic Analysis, the study found three themes. Learners' nervousness and fear of making mistakes negatively affected their role-play performances. Authentic situations in role-plays allowed them to feel more comfortable. Next, preparing role-play for performances in groups lessened learners’ anxiety. It is suggested that teachers offered learners choices whether to do live role-plays or show pre-recorded one. The latter may reduce anxiety and make it possible for learners to redo some parts, allowing them to showcase their best possible performance.

Abstract

The present study intends to investigate the types of rewards given to learners in English as a second/foreign language (L2) classes and L2 learners' views on the possible effects of rewards on their engagement. The study employed a case study design with class observations and semi-structured interviews as the methods of data collection. Indonesian high school learners at a private university participated in this study. Through the observations, it was found that learners received three types of rewards: verbal praise, non-verbal praise, and social reward. From the interviews, it was found that rewards could make the learning atmosphere more fun and competitive as well as increase learners’ attentiveness. Nonetheless, rewards alone were not sufficient to engage learners in independent learning requiring them to exert more effort in their L2 learning process. Overall this study contributes to the understanding of rewards in the Indonesian high school L2 context which is thus far fairly under-researched. Among others, this study concludes that teachers should know what kinds of rewards, when and how they are delivered to best achieve the intended effects. Suggested directions for relevant studies in the field are also stated alongside the possible limitations of this study.

Abstract

This community service programme was conducted in the form of an English communication empowerment programme for employees of OHANA, a disability rights organisation based in Yogyakarta. The programme consisted of ten 90-minute meetings conducted from early October 2022 up to mid-November 2022. The materials of this training included self-introduction, introducing others, making small talks with a wide range of topics, as well as job descriptions and job responsibilities. The programme was conducted in response to the need for OHANA employees to make more effective communications with foreign partners concerning their jobs as advocates of the rights of women and persons with disability. Despite the low attendance rate in some of the meetings due to the tight schedules of the OHANA employees in providing services to the community, the language empowerment programme can be considered successful seen from the engagement of the attending participants and the generally positive feedback from them. Several conclusions and recommendations are stated considering the degree of success of this programme for the betterment of future similar programmes.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate Indonesian High School students’ attitudes towards World Englishes, a construct developed based on a three-circle model proposed by Kachru. The study used an online questionnaire consisting of 22 items. The number of high school students from various regions in Indonesia participating in the study was 121. It was found that there was a moderate level of acceptance towards varieties of English. The participants believed that they should learn and be taught English varieties from inner-circle countries. However, the participants seemed to have very strong beliefs towards and pride in their local accents, to have high respect towards various accents around the world, and to perceive English to belong to whoever speaks it. Based on the finding on the participants’ positive attitude towards their local accents, English instruction could focus on the eventual purpose of learning a language, which is communication and building positive students’ self-perception about themselves regarding English. Hence, instead of comparing themselves with native speakers of English, students could focus on sharpening their English skills regardless of accents to be a part of the global community. The limitations and contributions of the present study are also presented, along with possible directions for relevant future studies in the field.

Abstract

This study investigated Theology students’ Foreign Language Reading Anxiety (FLRA) and the relationship between their FLRA and their reading achievement. A number of 63 Theology students participated in this quantitative study. A questionnaire developed by Saito et al. (1999) was used in obtaining the data for the study. The study was conducted to fill the void in the literature on the scarcity of empirical research on FLRA in the Indonesian English for Specific Purpose (ESP) context, especially among Theology students who were required to read a lot of English text and thus were very likely susceptible to experience reading anxiety. The study found that in general, the students experienced a medium level of FLRA. Low self-perceived reading competence and the unfamiliar topic of reading passages were reported to be attributed to higher FLRA levels whilst the formation of reading habits, reading exposure, and reading strategies were believed to reduce reading anxiety. This study further found a statistically significant negative correlation between the students’ FLRA and their reading achievement, albeit the strength being weak. This finding suggested that students’ FLRA could be a factor hampering learning. The present study’s specific finding on the possible positive impacts of reading strategies and the duration of reading exposure may indicate the urgency to incorporate these two aspects in the instructional design of English reading classes. Based on the findings, contributions, limitations, and suggested future studies were formulated.

Abstract

This study was aimed to analyse errors made by learners in writing four types of complex sentences; complex sentences with adjective clauses, noun clauses, adverb clauses, and multiple-clause structures in an Essay Writing class. This study was done based on the realisation that learners’ grammatical knowledge is not always translated into accurate language production in real writing contexts and as a continuation of a previous study with the same participants which found that learners’ mastery of complex sentence structure affected their L2 writing achievements. Through document analysis of 40 essays, by these learners, using Thematic Analysis, the present study found five major themes of errors. They were lack of tense consistency, errors of omission, which included omission of verbs, omission of subjects and verbs, and omission of subjects, errors of addition, incorrect verb formations (double finite verbs), and the combination of several errors. Using Error Analysis as a framework, some possible contributing factors were further examined. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications and limitations, along with suggested directions for future research were also presented.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to investigate the attitudes of non-English primary university students in Indonesia on using Instagram for vocabulary learning and to find out the students' views of learning English vocabulary using Instagram. Considering the popularity of Instagram among Indonesian university students and the scarcity of such studies involving non-English primary students, investigating their use of Instagram for English vocabulary learning can be worthwhile and relevant. The study involved 213 student participants who were Instagram users in an online survey and six in online interviews. The survey found that the participants generally had positive attitudes toward using Instagram for vocabulary learning. However, the study found the participants' somewhat ambivalent views through the Thematic Analysis of the interview data. Students reported consciously learning new isolated English vocabulary from English captions on Instagram. They unconsciously acquired isolated English vocabulary from photos and videos on Instagram. However, Instagram was not helping in obtaining vocabulary in contexts as it gave a limited content explanation. The findings could help teachers to make an informed decision when using Instagram in the instructional process, optimizing its strength and potential.ABSTRAKTujuan studi ini adalah untuk mengetahui sikap mahasiswa jurusan non-bahasa Inggris di Indonesia terhadap penggunaan Instagram untuk pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengetahui pandangan mahasiswa mengenai pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris menggunakan Instagram. How to Cite: Baruti, T.D.W.P., Subekti, A.S.
