Abstract

This study aims to provide insight for others who wish to do a self-study, discussing emerging themes related to student learning and strategy instruction at the post-secondary level. This study reviews a research article written by Parr & Woloshyn (2013), entitled “Reading Comprehension Strategies Instruction in a First-Year Course: An Instructor's Self-Study.” Results of the review include observations on how the related article doesn't adequately deliver objectives but is excellent at analyzing the previous literature, and the design of the research will make readers understand generally. The contents of this article are valid with all references used accurately. It concisely discussed reading comprehension and strategy instruction. Also, it used a robust theoretical framework that provides an opportunity to reflect the challenges and limitations associated with the application of explicit strategy instruction. Ultimately, this present study looks at independent learning instruction as a strategy in delivering a repertoire of evidence-based understanding strategies designed to introduce students to the conventions of reading and writing academics. This study especially entices educators, because this study can be a benchmark for lecturers to provide reading comprehension strategy in a first years course, especially reading skill.

Abstract

This current study is interested in assessing the trending studies discourse analysis during the last five years in the specific context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Using the library research method, this study collected 131,000 results of relevant articles from Google Scholar open-access database. This study then analysed 40 selected articles as its main data with NVivo 12 software to ensure its qualitative. Chronologically, this study described how discourse analysis studies have evolved. At first, solely focusing on using discourse analysis to identify students’ problems in reading comprehension, researchers began to use discourse analysis to examine how teachers authentically perform and propose ways to improve the classroom discourse. Moreover, discourse analysis not only revealed issues that exist between teacher-student and student-student interactive discourses, but also the discourse of critical issues contained in the textbooks that are mandated for EFL programmes.

Abstract

As social media and other new communication technologies are integrated into teaching and learning environments, educators and researchers continue to be interested in the discussion that takes place in such spaces. This paper reports the findings and the research gaps grounded from current research articles on conversation analysis (CA). The data is collected from international and highly reputable journal publishers, namely Science Direct, Elsevier, Sage, and Wiley. From the resulting 49 articles collected, the screening excluded 24 articles. Therefore, it is the remaining 25 articles that are systematically reviewed. The results indicate several themes throughout the current research field, i.e. digital CA, theory and methodology construction, body language or nonverbal conversation, atypical interaction, usage of specific phrases, and novel settings and objects. The practical implication of this systematic review is a collection of research gaps and recommendations that researchers can take note of and tackle in future studies.

Abstract

English Language Teaching (ELT) is inseparable with the teaching of the language’s culture. Indonesia has a national agenda of integrating folklore into the subject of English language in schools. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of folklore in Indonesian EFL textbooks for secondary high school. This study collected data from 10 textbooks from Grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, which are published by Erlangga, Yrama Widya, Yudhistira, PT Tiga Serangkai Pustaka Mandiri, and Kemdikbud. The data analysis method was content analysis. Results showed that Indonesian EFL textbooks for secondary high school level contains 5 genres of folklore, namely fables, fairy tales, folktales, legends and myths. This study found that the most dominant type of folklore in the textbooks are legends 12 (36,3%), followed by folktales 11 (33,3%), fairy tales 5 (15,1%), fables 3 (9,3%), and lastly myths 2 (6,0%). All genres covered the cultural heritage of nearly every island and major city in Indonesia, including other countries such as Vietnam, Serbia, German and Japan. This means that Indonesia is succeeding in carrying out the national agenda of preserving students' cultural awareness and local wisdom through the teaching of folktales in ELT. The findings of this study are useful to support and enrich cultural elements integrated in English textbooks particularly the for the teaching of folklore in Indonesian EFL classrooms.

Abstract

The study of online discourse on social networking sites (SNSs) is a relatively recent field of study where most of the methodology to study online conversations has been derived from spoken conversation analysis (CA). This study attempts to contribute to the development of digital conversation analysis by analysing screen-captured data of publicly available online conversations on Instagram on April 2020. 186 screen-captured data are analysed with digital conversation analysis to discuss and compare the turn-taking, repair, action formation, action sequencing and the role of technology on the production of online conversations. Results show tentative proof that the screen-capture method of data collection has a unique strength in that it gives researchers insight onto the moment-by-moment production of the online conversation that is not available from the traditional method of transcribing. The novelty of this digital CA research is the comparison between smartphone- and laptop-version of screen-captured data, specifically how the different medium affects the production of online discourse of the same SNS.

Abstract

The research attempted to address the research gaps in the semiotics of Korean-related media, considering that there were only a few studies on advertisements that had been influenced by the Korean craze. Capitalizing on the Hallyu Wave, an Indonesian cosmetics company, Scarlett Whitening, changed its Instagram marketing strategy to focus on its South Korean brand ambassador, Song Joong Ki. The data were two Instagram advertisements of Scarlett Whitening that represented their change of strategy in September 2021. The data were analyzed using multimodal analysis to find out the three metafunctions of the advertisements, referring to Kress and Leeuwen’s social semiotics theory. Results show that the representational meaning of both advertisements contains a solid narrative to invite readers to buy the product so that they can be closer to the South Korean actor. The interpersonal metafunction influences consumers to believe that the human model is very familiar with the product, and the compositional metafunction highlights the association between Song Joong Ki’s white skin, white clothes, and white product with the brand’s name. However, the analysis also indicates an extreme spotlight on the South Korean actor and a stark neglect of the product across the linguistic, visual, and spatial semiotic systems. The research is significant in revealing a potentially concerning upcoming business marketing strategy that capitalizes on the popularity of Korean culture at the cost of neglecting the authenticity of their products.

Abstract

This community service activity is based on the problems and needs of English teachers at SMA PGRI Pekanbaru City. The problem is that many students hesitate to speak English because they are afraid of making mistakes due to lack of vocabulary. The main focus of this activity is to provide support for effective learning methods in building an English vocabulary arsenal in the classroom without having to burden students to memorize a number of new vocabularies, such as the typical way of teaching vocabulary that is often carried out in many schools in Pekanbaru City. For this reason, the implementing team considered it necessary to carry out community service to all English teachers and students at SMA PGRI Pekanbaru City in the form of socialization and short training on gamification of English teaching that combines the Vocabulary Chain game and Three-sentence Storytelling, and accompanied by discussions and questions and answers to the participants of the activity. As a result, from the interpretation of the findings through the pre-test and post-test questionnaires, it was found that the activity succeeded in opening the teachers' insights into the depth of the potential of the two games that had been carried out for a long time but had not been very effective in encouraging students to dare to speak up so far.

Abstract

Educational research papers that explored Covid-19 have naturally focused on the problems of distance learning implementation but also underscores its severe impacts. This study aims to demonstrate the polemic against Covid-19 distance learning policies within news media outlet. The method of this qualitative study is a literature review on 5 newspaper media and 10 online media to obtain data of news items on Covid-19 distance learning that were published from April to December 2020 (9 months). This study tracked 82 news items from newspaper media and 191 news items from online media and determined three trends across all of the news items: obstacles, impact and policies of distance learning. Results showed that the implementation of distance learning is still far from expectations due to the lack of communication between the government and the school, the lack of human resources and supporting facilities, and the non-existent supervision towards schools that ignore the policies. This paper contributed in delivering the obstacles that arise from and because of distance education policies that news media report to the public.

This study aims to highlight and evaluate the issues at an in-depth level to provide different solutions that are expected to be a reflection for the government, especially the Ministry of Education and Culture, to be able to improve the implementation and monitoring of the Kampus Mengajar Program. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, and the data were collected from a focus group discussion with students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Lancang Kuning, then the data was analyzed descriptively. The results highlight some problems in the implementation of the Kampus Merdeka Program. These included a lack of coordination and clear communication between stakeholders, which led to confusion among students and schools, uneven targeting of schools, inadequate support for the program, and credit conversion, resulting in frustration and challenges. Addressing these issues, the study recommended increased socialization of the program, transparency in credit equivalency, and more accurate school data collection. In conclusion, this research offers several solutions that are expected to reflect the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) that the Kampus Mengajar Program faces various challenges in its implementation, which need to be addressed for the program to effectively meet its goal of improving education in the 3T areas.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze how Western memes were used as an innovative medium for teaching English grammar in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The study addressed the limited empirical synthesis on multimodal, humor-based resources for grammar teaching in digital learning environments. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA protocol, twenty five empirical articles published between 2020 and 2025 were selected from Scopus, Google Scholar, DOAJ, and ERIC databases. The review showed that meme based grammar instruction increased students’ motivation and emotional engagement and reduced learning anxiety through the integration of humor, visual supports, and culturally relevant content. The use of memes also fostered active participation and a more democratic classroom climate. However, the findings revealed age related differences: younger learners were more enthusiastic and readily aligned with meme culture, whereas older learners required clearer explanations of cultural references to benefit optimally. Overall, the synthesis indicated that Western memes were effective in enhancing grammatical understanding and long-term retention when implemented consistently and integrated with explicit instructional activities. These results suggested that memes could function not merely as entertainment but as a meaningful pedagogical tool that connects cognitive, affective, and social dimensions in English language learning. Implications for teachers and curriculum designers include the need to select culturally accessible memes and to scaffold their use with clear linguistic objectives
