Abstract

In Malang City, breast cancer is recorded as the second most common cancer in East Java. Based on data from 2021–2022, the number of breast cancer cases in Malang increased to 29 cases. This indicates that breast cancer remains a serious public health problem requiring special attention, particularly in terms of prevention and early detection. One of the simplest early detection efforts that can be carried out independently is breast self-examination (BSE). However, the practice of BSE among adolescent girls is strongly influenced by their level of knowledge regarding breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge about breast cancer and breast self-examination behavior among adolescent girls at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. This research employed an analytical correlation method with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 85 students, with a sample of 46 students selected through proportional random sampling. The research instruments included a breast cancer knowledge questionnaire and a BSE behavior questionnaire that had been tested for validity. The results showed that the level of knowledge among adolescent girls at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang was mostly in the moderate category. Similarly, their BSE behavior was also predominantly in the moderate category. Data analysis using the Chi-Square statistical test revealed a significant relationship between knowledge about breast cancer and breast self-examination behavior, as indicated by a p-value = 0.022 (<0.05), which means the research hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, the findings suggest that better knowledge of breast cancer is associated with better BSE behavior among adolescent girls. Therefore, continuous efforts in the form of communication, information, and education (CIE) on early detection of breast cancer are necessary. Improved knowledge is expected to raise awareness and encourage adolescent girls to routinely perform BSE as a preventive measure against breast cancer

Abstract

The phenomenon of promiscuity and public sex among Indonesian teenagers is increasingly worrying. Adolescents have the highest rate of STI infection compared to other age groups. The low level of knowledge among adolescents is one of the reasons why the  incidence of sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents is high. Health education through booklets is a way to increase knowledge for adolescents. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of health education using pamphlets in increasing adolescents' knowledge about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in SMAS Diponegoro Tumpang, Malang Regency. The design of this study was a pretest design with a single-group pretest-posttest design. The population used was class XI SMAS Diponegoro Tumpang with a total of 89 people and a sample of 40 people using proportional stratified random sampling technique. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire. Analyze the data using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and the results obtain p-value = 0.000, so we can conclude that the p-value is less than (0.000 <0.05), we it can be concluded that there exists an effect of health education by media booklet to increase adolescents' knowledge about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at SMAS Diponegoro Tumpang, Malang Regency. In addition to being easy to read anytime, anywhere, textbooks also have another advantage: they have images that can attract and arouse the interest of educational subjects in reading.

Abstract

Background: LBW and asphyxia are the two main causes of neonatal death in Indonesia. Babies of preeclampsia mothers are at risk of developing LBW due to impaired blood flow to the placenta which increases the risk of asphyxia. This study aims to analyze the relationship between LBW and asphyxia in infants from preeclampsia mothers. Method: Observational research with a retrospective approach with a population of 473 babies born at Islamic Hospital in Malang Indonesia. Samples were taken using purposive sampling techniques with a total sample of 49 babies from preeclampsia mothers. Data were obtained from medical records with instruments in the form of checklist sheets or observation sheets and analyzed using the Spearman test with an alpha of 0.05. Results: The majority of babies had normal birth weight, and some experienced LBW as many as 16 babies (32.7%) and VLBW 2 babies (4.1%). Most of the infants experienced mild asphyxia in 42 infants (85.7%), with a small percentage experiencing moderate to severe asphyxia. The results of the Spearman test showed a significant relationship between LBW and asphyxia (p = 0.002; r = 0.433) with moderate relationship strength and positive relationship direction. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the lower the baby's birth weight, the higher the risk of asphyxia, especially in mothers with preeclampsia. It is recommended to healthcare workers to carry out early detection and monitoring of high-risk pregnancies to prevent neonatal complications such as LBW and asphyxia.

Abstract

Growth and development of children aged 2–4 years are critical indicators in determining long-term health outcomes and school readiness. This period is considered the golden age, as rapid brain development occurs, making early detection of growth and developmental disorders essential. However, developmental screening coverage in Indonesia remains suboptimal, and monitoring in early childhood education settings often focuses more on physical growth than developmental aspects. This study aimed to describe the growth and developmental status of children aged 2–4 years using the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook and the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) at PAUD Vinolia Mojolangu. A descriptive observational design was applied to 23 children. Growth was assessed using height-for-age (HFA), weight-for-age (WFA), weight-for-height (WFH), and body mass index-for-age (BMI-for-age) indicators. Developmental status was evaluated using the DDST, which measures four domains: gross motor, fine motor, language, and personal-social skills. The results showed that most children were classified as having normal growth based on WFH and BMI-for-age indicators. In terms of development, the majority demonstrated age-appropriate outcomes, with one child categorized as “suspect” in the personal-social domain. These findings indicate that integrated monitoring using the MCH Handbook and DDST is effective in identifying children's growth and developmental conditions comprehensively. Strengthening early detection through collaboration among healthcare providers, early childhood educators, and parents is recommended to ensure timely and appropriate interventions.
