Abstract

The Pirie-Kieren theory provides a dynamic framework that explains how mathematical understanding develops in layers, starting from initial introduction to reflection through eight layers of understanding. The eight layers of understanding are Primitive Knowing, Image Making, Image Having, Property Noticing, Formalizing, Observing, Structuring, and Inventising. This study aims to analyze students' mathematical understanding in solving literacy problems based on Pirie-Kieren's theory. This study is a qualitative descriptive study, involving 15 tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Kupang Barat, Indonesia. The research instruments used were literacy tests and interviews. In-depth interviews were conducted with student representatives who had reached each layer of understanding. Student representatives were selected based on purposive sampling. Data analysis in this study was carried out in four stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and triangulation. The literacy test data were analyzed based on Pirie-Kieren's eight layers of understanding. The eight layers of understanding are. The results show that 73.33% of students reached the image having a layer of understanding, 13.33% reached the formalizing layer, 6.67% reached the image-making layer, and 6.67% reached only the primitive knowing layer. No students reached the observing, structuring, or inventing layers. The dominance of students in the image, having a level of understanding, shows that most students have only reached the initial stage. These results indicate that students' mathematical understanding of literacy questions remains at a basic level and has not developed into a reflective understanding.    Keywords: mathematical literacy, literacy questions, mathematical understanding, Pirie Kieren theory.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out in Bonen Village, Kupang Regency, aiming to preserve traditional weaving culture while empowering women and young generations. The leading partner of this activity was the Ume Halan Foundation, which mentors the Pasuklo Weaving Community. The primary problems identified were the lack of regeneration of young weavers and the absence of written guidelines for the weaving learning process. The program was implemented through a participatory approach comprising several stages: preparation and socialization; focus group discussions to enrich data; module revision and trials; training on module use; and continuous mentoring and evaluation. The outcome of this program is a locally wisdom–based weaving module that introduces motifs, basic weaving techniques, tools and materials, and the use of natural dyes. The module was produced in both printed and digital formats to ensure accessibility across generations. The training involved approximately 15 elementary school students from SD Inpres Bonen and 12 senior weavers from the Pasuklo Community. The participatory evaluation showed that 80% of participants found the module easy to understand and engaging, and that teachers and local weavers agreed it effectively facilitated intergenerational knowledge transfer. Overall, this program contributes to cultural preservation, women's empowerment, and the revitalization of young weavers in Bonen Village, while strengthening Ume Halan's role as a sustainable community learning center.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy is an important competency because it helps students formulate, use, and interpret mathematics in real-life contexts. However, the teaching of the Pythagorean theorem still frequently emphasizes formula memorization and procedures, causing students to struggle with understanding its geometric meaning, representations, and application in contextual problems. This study aims to develop Scan to Learn teaching materials integrated with local wisdom and Augmented Reality on the topic of the Pythagorean theorem to improve students' mathematical literacy. The study employed a Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model through the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects were 25 eighth-grade students at Adisucipto Junior High School in Kupang City, with instruments consisting of validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, mathematical literacy tests, and student activity observation sheets. The results showed that the teaching materials obtained a mean validation score of 3.45, categorized as very good. Student responses reached 96.93% and teacher responses reached 96%, placing the product in the very practical category. In terms of effectiveness, all students achieved mastery with a mean post-test score of 87.76 and an N-Gain of 0.62, categorized as moderate. The Scan to Learn teaching materials based on local wisdom and Augmented Reality are deemed suitable for use as a contextual, visual, and meaningful alternative for learning Pythagoras. This product contributes to strengthening mathematical literacy by connecting mathematical concepts with local culture and interactive visualization.

Abstract

Indonesian students’ mathematical literacy skills, particularly in algebra, are still relatively low, as shown by the results of PISA 2022. A significant contributing factor is the limited relevance of teaching materials to students’ real-life contexts. This study introduces an innovative approach by developing algebra teaching materials based on local wisdom—referred to as local wisdom literacy—as a meaningful context for improving mathematical literacy among seventh-grade junior high school students. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of traditional Timorese cultural practices, such as weaving patterns, local measurement systems, and indigenous numerical reasoning, into formal algebra instruction. Using the ADDIE development model, this Research and Development (R&D) study produced culturally embedded materials that were validated by experts, with validity scores of 85.4% for content and 85% for assessment instruments. The materials were also considered highly practical (96.93% by students, 96% by teachers) and effective, as indicated by a moderate average N-Gain of 0.42 in student learning outcomes. In addition to improving conceptual understanding and mathematical literacy, the developed materials serve as a culturally responsive pedagogical model that is in line with the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum and supports the preservation of local culture. This study provides a contextual and humanistic alternative in algebra learning, which offers pedagogical value and cultural significance

Abstract

This study developed Augmented Reality (AR)‑embedded ethnomathematical learning materials to enhance junior secondary students’ understanding of relations and functions. Using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluations), the development integrated Timorese cultural artefacts as conceptual contexts and AR visualizations as representational support. In collecting data, we used questionnaires, interviews, and learning outcome tests. Expert validation indicated a very high level of validity (mean 87.15), while student responses (81.2%) and teacher evaluations (36/40) confirmed the practicality and classroom suitability of the materials. Effectiveness testing demonstrated substantial improvement in conceptual understanding, as reflected in pretest–posttest gains and N‑Gain scores categorized as moderate to high. The findings show that the purposeful integration of cultural contexts and AR strengthens conceptual meaning‑making, increases learning engagement, and effectively bridges students’ cultural practices with formal mathematical representations
