Abstract

Translanguaging pedagogy is the balance of using two languages in language learning. As in Indonesian context, the practice of integrating Indonesian language (L1) into English classes (L2) or translanguaging practice is very common to happen. Many students think it is useful for them in learning a foreign language. The students perceived the translingual practice is helpful. However, the teachers still think it is an illegitimate practice. Therefore, this research aims to support the idea of using Indonesian language in English language learning and explore its practice for students scaffolding. The method used was a descriptive qualitative using observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The data source for this research was 40 high school students taught by one English teacher, selected purposefully. The findings of this study show that teachers and students engage in translanguaging activities. The teachers and students use Indonesian language for more than half of the entire teaching and learning process. Although, the teacher still felt that the use of Indonesian language is inevitable due to the students' low abilities. Yet, from the student side, this practice received a positive response. Students found it beneficial for understanding English lessons.

Abstract

The variation of linguistic characteristics in academic writing between male and female is inevitable to happen. Therefore, this study aimed at finding out the differences of male and female students in linguistic characteristics of academic writing from perspective of linguistics, especially at the level of text analysis. The quantitative research method with convergent parallel design was used to analyze sixty students’ essay writing chosen by using a purposive sampling technique. The result revealed that there were some differences of linguistic characteristics in academic writing between male and female. The female students outperformed male students in all linguistic characteristics in text-level analysis. The female students were found more capable in paragraphing competences, linking devices, text output counts, topical organization, and ending. The findings generally support the notion that differences of linguistic characteristics between male and female should be considered in teaching academic writing to create a friendly teaching-learning process for both genders.

Abstract

Basic literacy including reading is an important competency to build other competencies. However, the reading literacy of Indonesian students is still low, both reports of Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM). Therefore, this community service program aimed at increasing students' motivation in reading. The program used a mixed method with techniques of lecturing-discussion and demonstration-practice. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Idi Rayeuk, East Aceh. The participants were high school students of class XII totaling 52 people consisting of 22 male and 30 female. This activity was carried out in five sessions: (1) pre-training questionnaire; (2) seminar on reading and critical thinking; (3) workshop on using simple AI applications for reading; (4) discussion; and (5) post-training questionnaire. The result showed a positive change in the attitude of the trainees towards reading literacy and critical thinking. It was shown by the difference in the results of the students’ views between the pre-training and post-training. Students stated that they were neutral towards reading habits, especially reading in English before the briefing. After the briefing, students experienced an improvement in their perception and became more confident that they should like reading and also reading in English in the future. In addition, students were enthusiastic in training on simple AI applications for reading. The implication indicates that teachers should motivate students to read more, both in Indonesian and English.

Abstract

The level of digital literacy of the Indonesian people is still low, including young generation. Therefore, students must be prepared early on digital literacy. This activity aims to provide knowledge in the form of skills for junior high school students to be able to recognize and utilize information technology, especially students' digital literacy skills. This activity was in the form of training on the introduction of basic digital literacy. As a result, several mixed approaches are used, namely lecturing, discussion, and practice. The materials taught in this training include digital culture, online security skills, digital ethics, creating emails and finding and storing information for learning. From the FGDs conducted on teachers and students, it revealed that after participating in this training there was a change in students' attitudes in learning towards online learning. Students who have attended the training can recognize digital literacy and begin to use digital information and electronic books as learning resources, especially when doing assignments and homework. Therefore, it can be said that this training has made a positive contribution to increasing students' understanding of digital literacy.

Abstract

The purpose of incorporating digital learning materials into vocational school English instruction is to assist students in acquiring specific competencies. Additionally, prepared digital learning materials are intended to assist teachers in developing instructional materials that follow the principles of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in vocational high schools (SMK). The research used the qualitative research and development (R&D) method. The stages of developing this teaching material model are adapted from Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel's 4Ds model (1974), which consists of four stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate. As data sources, the participants were two teachers from two different vocational schools with a combined enrolment of 115 students. This research's results are a model for developing digital-based teaching materials (prepared digital learning materials). Furthermore, it was discovered that using the prepared digital learning materials greatly aided teachers in teaching English to achieve specific competencies. From the students' perspective, they admitted that it was also exciting because they perceived learning as distinct from traditional   learning materials due to digital materials usage.

Abstract

Parents play a vital role in supporting their children’s academic achievement. This study aims to identify the types of parental involvement that support students’ English learning at SMPN 3 Langsa and to examine how these forms of involvement relate to students’ English achievement. This study addresses this gap by examining the forms and effects of parental involvement on English achievement among eighth-grade students in an Indonesian public middle school. Guided by Epstein’s Framework of Parental Involvement, this study categorizes parental practices into six types and investigates their relationship with students’ formal English achievement scores. A qualitative-dominant design was employed, triangulating three data sources: (1) questionnaires measuring the frequency of involvement across Epstein’s types, (2) semi-structured interviews exploring parental practices and motivations, and (3) official English score documents quantifying students’ achievement. Findings show that parenting, learning at home, and volunteering were the most frequently practiced types of involvement, with rates of 89%, 84%, and 82%, respectively. Qualitative patterns indicated that learning-at-home involvement—including homework supervision and structured study routines—was strongly associated with higher English achievement scores, particularly among students consistently surpassing the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM). The study contributes context-specific evidence for designing targeted parental engagement programs that address the unique demands of L2 learning in Indonesian middle schools.

Abstract

Students’ reading skills in English reflect the cultural interaction that takes place during language learning. When students are able to recognize and understand the cultural aspects of a text, it is predicted that they can usually interpret it more effectively. The purpose of this study is to examine students’ understanding of intercultural communication in English reading and to investigate the relationship between intercultural communication and reading comprehension. The study applied a quantitative descriptive method, using a reading comprehension test and a questionnaire as the instruments for data collection. The participants consisted of 40 high school students, equally divided into 20 males and 20 females. The findings indicate a strong and positive correlation between students’ intercultural communication skills and their ability to comprehend English reading texts. The linear regression analysis produced a strong correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.64) by referring to Correlation Pearson Product Moment. These findings suggest that English teachers should consider the intercultural communication in teaching reading comprehension. Eventually, incorporating intercultural communication into English language teaching is essential, particularly to support the development of students’ reading skills.
