Abstract

The transformation of tropical landscapes due to agricultural expansion constitutes a significant global environmental challenge. Current land-cover classification methods, however, provide limited differentiation among agricultural management systems. This study develops an agriculture-focused land-cover classification workflow that fuses Landsat 9 optical imagery and PALSAR-2 L-band SAR across a ≈2,500 km² study area in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, to enhance discrimination of crop systems and improve spatial coherence via object-based enhancement. A 22-class land-cover taxonomy was supported by 14,029 strategically collected training points. Feature engineering produced 29 predictor variables, including conventional vegetation indices, agricultural-specific metrics, water indicators, and SAR-derived structural features. Models were evaluated on an independent test dataset comprising 4,209 samples. An agriculture-weighted Random Forest classifier with strategic class weighting was implemented and followed by Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) object-based enhancement to suppress speckle and enforce spatial contiguity. The classification achieved an overall accuracy of 53.7%, with exceptional performance for estate crop systems (F1 = 94%) and reliable forest discrimination. SLIC reduced salt-and-pepper noise by 99.5% and substantially improved spatial coherence metrics, transforming fragmented pixel-based outputs into operationally viable products. Despite these gains, discriminating smallholder mosaics remains challenging and likely requires additional temporal or higher-resolution inputs.

Abstract

Currently, the government continues to encourage the development of oil palm plantation areas with the aim of boosting domestic economic activity. Tanjung Siram has a large area of land and has the potential to be developed into plantations, especially oil palm plantations. This regency has a land area of 1056 ha. Therefore, an evaluation of land suitability needs to be carried out in order to know the actual and potential land suitability class recommendations for oil palm plantations in that village. The stages in the research included secondary data collection, pre-survey, main survey and soil analysis in the laboratory. Land suitability classification is done by matching method. From the research results it is known that the limiting factors in the actual land suitability class at the study site were temperature, water availability, nutrient retention, and erosion hazard. After improvements have been made with good land management, the land suitability class can be increased with a potential land suitability class, which was previously classified as S3, increased to S2, and previously classified as S2, can be increased to S1. Thus, to obtain good oil palm growth in this region, it is necessary to improve the limiting factors on each land.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the intensity of rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) attacks on oil palm leaf sheaths during the Mature Plant (TM) phase at PT. Binanga Karya. The rhinoceros beetle is a major pest of oil palm plants, reducing vegetative growth and potentially impacting crop productivity if not properly controlled. This study was conducted through a field survey using purposive sampling in mature plant blocks. Observed parameters included the number of infested plants, the number of leaf sheath holes, and the level of leaf sheath damage as an indicator of pest attack intensity. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively by calculating the percentage of attack intensity based on the ratio between the number of infested plants and the total sampled plant population. The results showed that rhinoceros beetle attack intensity was mild to moderate, with variations in the level of damage between plant blocks. The leaf sheath damage found generally consisted of bore holes and bite marks at the base of the sheath. Although the attack has not yet caused a significant decrease in production, the presence of this pest still requires vigilance because it has the potential to increase the level of damage if the population is not controlled. Therefore, appropriate and sustainable pest control efforts are needed to maintain plant health and the stability of palm oil production.

Abstract

Farmers in Sei Baru village manage marginal peatlands for producing the galangal. So far, testing of soil characteristics has never been carried out. Fertilization and culture practices are just based on knowledge from generation to generation, so it is important to study the characteristics of soil chemical properties of the peatlands that have been used for producing galangal. The research was conducted from December 2020 until February 2021 in a galangal plantation-grown by the community in Sei Baru Village, Panai Hilir District, Labuhanbatu Regency. The method used was a free grid survey method at the semi-detailed survey level. The implementation of soil sampling of 5 sample points with a distance of 100 meters in the field using a random method spread over a predetermined area. The results showed that the peat soil planted with galangal in Sei Baru Village had a pH of around 4.542, C-org was 52.18%, organic matter was 89.972%, N-total was 1.418%, C/N was 36.852, P-Bray was 963.41 ppm, and K-total was 0.14. Overall, the chemical properties of the soil in galangal plantations Sei Baru Village, Panai Hilir District, Labuhanbatu Regency are in good condition.to increase its fertility for galangal cultivation, it can be done by increasing the pH and potassium in the soil so that it will become more favorable for growing galangal and can be used as a recommendation for galangal fertilization.
