Abstract

The transformation of education in Indonesia has become a central issue that continues to be discussed in the realm of national education. The government is trying to present a curriculum that is adaptive and relevant to the needs of the times, one of which is by creating the Merdeka Curriculum. Although the Merdeka Curriculum gives teachers greater authority, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how the conversion from CP to ATP impacts the concept of Merdeka Mengajar. This study aims to analyze the process of formulating CP to ATP with the aim of exploring the meaning of "Merdeka Mengajar" in more depth. Using content analysis, this study examines the Merdeka Curriculum documents, especially the process of converting CP to (ATP) in a case study. The Merdeka Curriculum provides space for educators to be creative in learning, but there needs to be a better mechanism to ensure alignment in achieving learning objectives. The flexibility of the Merdeka Curriculum has the potential to increase the relevance of learning, but also poses challenges in maintaining the quality and uniformity of student learning outcomes. The Merdeka Mengajar concept carried by the Merdeka Curriculum is to provide greater autonomy to teachers to plan and implement learning according to the conditions of students in achieving the CP of the curriculum.

Abstract

This study provides a novel examination of the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) technology into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction, specifically within the context of Management studies at Universitas Borneo Tarakan. It addresses a significant gap in empirical research by focusing on VR's effectiveness in teaching ESP within a management context, an area that has yet to be thoroughly explored. Using pre-and post-test scores from 286 students and detailed evaluation metrics, this research provides robust evidence of VR's transformative potential in enhancing ESP instruction. The findings indicate a clear improvement in language proficiency following VR-enhanced teaching, with significant increases in top-scoring students and decreases among those struggling with lower scores. Additionally, high levels of student engagement were observed during VR-enhanced lessons. Students reported positive usability experiences with the technology and expressed satisfaction with their learning outcomes. They also perceived significant benefits from using VR technology in their ESP instruction, including improved comprehension, increased motivation and engagement, and enhanced memory retention. However, alongside these positive outcomes are challenges that must be addressed for effective implementation. These include technical issues experienced by some participants suggesting the need for improvements or troubleshooting to enhance user experience; adaptation difficulties faced by learners when transitioning to new teaching methods introduced via virtual reality indicating the importance of providing additional support or guidance; and accessibility challenges emphasizing the need to ensure equal access for all learners when implementing such innovative technologies. In light of these findings, it is recommended that institutions like Universitas Borneo Tarakan looking to integrate VR into their ESP instruction consider establishing robust technical support structures to address potential issues. They should also provide additional guidance during transitions to new teaching methods introduced via virtual reality and prioritize ensuring accessibility for all learners. This study contributes valuable insights into effective strategies for modernizing ESP instruction using innovative technologies like Virtual Reality while highlighting areas where further exploration is needed.

Samples were taken as many as 70 respondentsfrom class XI SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor. Data collection techniques are usingquestionnaires and interview guidelines. The results of the questionnaire wereanalyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and interview results as supportinginformation. The results of this study indicate that EFL students provide perceptionsof CloudX online learning media from the positive and negative sides. On thepositive side, students are helped to take distance learning at home through virtualmeetings using the CloudX application. In addition, there are several features suchas audio, video, chat rooms, and share screens to support students and teachers indiscussing and communicating in the online learning process. Therefore, studentscan easily understand the learning topic because the teacher can share and explainthe material at the same time. Furthermore, the CloudX app also provides a positiveexperience with students. For example, students can know how to use technology (egCloudX). However, EFL students also gave negative perceptions of online learningthrough CloudX. Based on the results of the study, sometimes online learningthrough CloudX is not effective because there are several obstacles such as studentsnot having a good internet connection and not all students having adequate facilities(such as smartphones or laptops) as supporting devices to attend virtual meetingsthrough CloudX. On the other hand, most students prefer to share and discuss ideaswith peers and colleagues, responding to online discussions in traditional face-tofaceclassesasinnormalsituationsbeforedistanceeducationwasimplemented.

Abstract

This paper aims to improve students' listening comprehension by implementing a structured instructional program that emphasizes three critical elements: Listening for Gist, Inferring Meaning, and Detecting Signposts. The primary goal is to identify educational strategies that are effective and can significantly enhance students' academic performance and listening abilities. The study addresses a significant gap in previous research by offering a comprehensive framework that integrates multiple aspects of listening comprehension, thereby contributing to the existing literature. This framework often isolates these skills. The program aims to enhance students' listening scores and cultivate a more profound comprehension of spoken language by implementing a targeted approach. The research utilizes a classroom action research design involving a cohort of 40 students who participated in three distinct instruction cycles. Each cycle focused on A specific listening component, which involved using a combination of active listening techniques, contextual exercises, and signpost identification activities. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the instructional strategies and the progression of the students, pre-and post-test assessments were implemented. In all three cycles, the results show substantial improvements, with average scores increasing from 60 to 75 in Listening for Gist, 65 to 82 in Inferring Meaning, and 70 to 88 in Detecting Signposts. These results indicate that the targeted interventions were effective in improving students' listening skills, as numerous students demonstrated a significant improvement in their ability to understand spoken texts. This research has implications for both educational practice and future research. The results emphasize the significance of a multifaceted approach to listening instruction, which motivates educators to implement comparable frameworks in their instruction. Furthermore, additional research could investigate the long-term implications of these instructional strategies on listening proficiency and their generalisability in various educational settings.
