Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the integration of heutagogy in mobile-based English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching within Indonesian higher education, examining its challenges and benefits. Emphasizing learner autonomy, engagement, and motivation, the research employs a qualitative design, involving semi-structured interviews with EFL instructors and students from two Indonesian universities. Thematic analysis reveals cultural barriers to heutagogy, such as traditional teacher-centered methods, hierarchical structures, cultural norms, and language proficiency issues. Despite these challenges, notable advantages include enhanced learner autonomy, engagement, collaboration, communication skills, critical thinking, and the promotion of lifelong learning attitudes. The findings suggest that heutagogical approaches in mobile-based EFL teaching hold promise for Indonesian higher education. The study advocates for the adoption of heutagogical principles, alongside comprehensive training for educators, to foster more learner-centered environments. It also underscores the need for further research to develop strategies to address the challenges and evaluate the long-term effects on student learning outcomes, thereby advancing EFL teaching practices in the region.

Abstract

Book reviews are intended to inform and evaluate a book's content and quality. It presents review critiques of the English curriculum and material development book by Pryla Rochmawati. The reviewer classified into four major sections from 11 chapters: curriculum and syllabus, curriculum components, the English curriculum in Indonesia, and the development of English-language materials. To begin, curriculum and syllabus are introduced briefly in language and explained in simple terms like those found in the first paragraph. Secondly, the curriculum is addressed by analyzing the needs of the students, establishing objectives, assessing their progress, and evaluating their progress. The third section discusses the Indonesian curriculum and how it has evolved. Material development based on Tomlinson's theory is presented in the fourth section. An evaluation of the author's visual approach and the content will be conducted in the review.

Abstract

The transformation of education in Indonesia has become a central issue that continues to be discussed in the realm of national education. The government is trying to present a curriculum that is adaptive and relevant to the needs of the times, one of which is by creating the Merdeka Curriculum. Although the Merdeka Curriculum gives teachers greater authority, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how the conversion from CP to ATP impacts the concept of Merdeka Mengajar. This study aims to analyze the process of formulating CP to ATP with the aim of exploring the meaning of "Merdeka Mengajar" in more depth. Using content analysis, this study examines the Merdeka Curriculum documents, especially the process of converting CP to (ATP) in a case study. The Merdeka Curriculum provides space for educators to be creative in learning, but there needs to be a better mechanism to ensure alignment in achieving learning objectives. The flexibility of the Merdeka Curriculum has the potential to increase the relevance of learning, but also poses challenges in maintaining the quality and uniformity of student learning outcomes. The Merdeka Mengajar concept carried by the Merdeka Curriculum is to provide greater autonomy to teachers to plan and implement learning according to the conditions of students in achieving the CP of the curriculum.

Abstract

This paper explores the way the demographic factors, usage behaviours, and learning strategies of English writing students affect their proficiency in writing by using Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tools. In particular, it poses the following question: How do the demographics, MALL use patterns, and learning strategies of the learners interact to influence their proficiency in writing English? The online questionnaire was used to gather data on 124 university students in Kalimantan. Descriptive analysis showed that 67 per cent of the participants are female, with a majority of them being aged 18 to 20 years. Most of them applied MALL tools to train text types (28 percent), improve the writing style (21 percent), and grammatical accuracy (19 percent). The findings have shown great scores of self-direction (86%), problem-solving orientation (79%), which portrays proactive and reflective learners. All of those strategies were related to enhanced writing abilities at all levels. The conclusion of the paper is that the integration of the MALL tools can enhance self-directed and problem-based learning in writing classes. The results provide a helpful contribution to educators in the creation of adaptive and strategy-based MALL-assisted instruction writing.
