Abstract

Abstract

Negative effects on health will occur in excessive use of paracetamol. The main objective of this study was to determine the hepatoprotective activity of Propolis Trigona spp., Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Myrmeleon sp. in rats induced by paracetamol. The study was conducted on 36 Sprague Dawley rats with 6 rats in each group. Group 1 (normal control), group 2 (positive control, temulawak 42.86 mg/kg BW), group 3 (negative control), group 4 (infusion of Myrmeleon 10 mg/kg BW), group 5 (propolis extract 0.02 ml/kg BW), and group 6 (Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion 0.02 ml/kg BW). Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically and microscopically for liver histopathology. The results showed that during three weeks of treatment with Propolis Trigona spp., Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Myrmeleon sp. in rats, this treatment could decrease ALT and AST activity as the positive control. The ALT activity values of the three materials were 69.26, 51.00, 51.00, 43.67, U/I with AST values of 110.29, 97.33, 91.00, 91.33 U/I. Based on Duncan's test, there were significant differences between all treatments with negative and positive control groups. Likewise, with the histopathological scoring results, the negative control was found to be significantly different from all treatments. Therefore, treatment with propolis Trigona spp., Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Myrmeleon sp. may have hepatoprotective benefit.

Abstract

Soursop (Annona muricata L.) is a plant with many health benefits. Soursop leaves are widely used as traditional medicine by Indonesian citizen for wound infection healing. The antibacterial activity of soursop leaves cannot be separated from the presence of endophytic microbes that live inside. Endophytic bacteria live in plant tissues and have beneficial for their host plants. Endophytic microbes are able to produce same secondary metabolites as their host such as producing antibacterial compounds. Thirty one bacterial endophytes were isolated from soursop leaves that from 3 different regions: Garut, Cianjur, and Sukabumi. Morphologically, endophytic bacterial isolates from the three regions had different diversity. Bacterial isolates were tested for their activity against 4 test pathogenic bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus mutans, and Streptococcus aureus. Antibacterial test using disc diffusion method with chloramphenicol 500 m/mL as positive control. Based on the antibacterial activity test, isolate G42 was able to inhibit all types of test bacteria. G42 isolates forms a zone of inhibition up to 17 mm in P. aeroginosa. Based on 16S rRNA, G42 isolates had similarity with Pantoea wallisii up to 93.24%. This study shows that endophytic bacteria isolated from soursop leaves have the potential to be developed into antibacterial agents.

Abstract

Sheep breeders generally raise their sheep by releasing and allowing their livestock to graze wildly. This causes the sheep to receive feed intake with unbalanced nutrition. One of the student programs in the KKN-T IPB University in Pantai Mekar Village, Muara Gembong District, Bekasi Regency, were checking physical conditions, socializing management of sheep maintenance and distribution of vitamin B complex which to improve the health of the sheep. It was reported that four sheep were found dead after B complex vitamin administration to in four days. The sheep cadavers were brought to the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, IPB to undergo carcass surgery or necropsy to reveal the cause of death. The results of necropsy found Haemonchus contortus worm infestation in the abomasum of sheep, accompanied by accumulation of fluid under the skin, chest cavity, stomach, and lungs. The cause of death of the four sheep based on necropsy was caused by severe infestation of the Haemonchus contortus type of worm and malnutrition, which lead to hypoalbuminemia and progressed to edema in the lungs, which resulted in shortness of breath (dyspnea). In this case the necropsy results showed that the administration of vitamin B complex was not the cause of the death of the sheep.
