Abstract

This paper examines the role of keroncong music as a medium for building and strengthening the values of patriotism, nationalism, and diversity harmony in Indonesia. Keroncong music, which was first introduced by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century, underwent a process of acculturation until it became an integral part of Indonesian cultural identity. During the colonial period, this genre of music was used as a symbolic tool of resistance that ignited the spirit of struggle and nationalism. With its touching lyrics and melodious tunes, keroncong became a means for the Indonesian people to express their love for their homeland and national identity. Songs such as “Bengawan Solo,” “Melati di Tapal Batas,” and “Rayuan Pulau Kelapa” became powerful symbols of patriotism and played an important role in the Indonesian independence movement. Postcolonial literary criticism was applied to understand how colonial and nationalist elements interacted in keroncong music, as well as how keroncong helped reconstruct postcolonial national identity in Indonesia. The results of the study show that keroncong music not only serves as entertainment but also as a symbol of struggle that reflects Indonesia's national identity. As an adaptive form of music, keroncong has successfully maintained its relevance by incorporating local elements and themes that reflect Indonesia's socio-political dynamics. In its lyrics, keroncong conveys messages rich in national values and diversity, capable of embracing all layers of Indonesian society, from various ethnicities, religions, and social backgrounds. The value of patriotism in keroncong music emerges through themes of struggle, love for the homeland, and pride as an independent nation. Nationalism in keroncong is further strengthened by the use of local language and idioms, as well as the incorporation of traditional cultural elements deeply rooted in Indonesian society.

Abstract

This research analyzes the stereotypes of beauty and ugliness in Soman Chainani’s The School for Good and Evil. This research aims to identify the stereotypes of beauty and ugliness constructed through the characterization of the two main characters, Sophie and Agatha, as well as how the novel challenges and reconstructs traditional expectations of beauty and ugliness. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis methods, this research identifies narrative elements that reinforce and challenge these stereotypes. The research results show that beauty is often associated with good, while ugliness is associated with evil. Sophie, who is described as very physically beautiful, was initially considered good, but later developed into a character full of selfishness. Agatha, who is perceived as ugly, actually displays kindness and strong morality. The novel The School For Good and Evil subverts the traditional stereotype, showing that physical appearance does not always reflect a person's morality. This research uses the theories of Janice Radway and John Cawelti. Radway explains that beauty is often associated with the role of the female hero, while Cawelti discusses the balance between convention and invention in popular works. This research identifies beauty not only through outer beauty such as physical appearance but also inner beauty. Good deeds such as defending, forgiving, helping, giving, and loving are the essence of goodness. With the meaning that inner beauty involves honesty, sincerity, and good deeds that reflect the values of true goodness.

Abstract

This study examines the textual strategies used to reclaim female agency in Carol Ann Duffy’s poetry collection “The World’s Wife” through Hélène Cixous’s framework of écriture féminine. While past research heavily generalizes historical or mythological adaptations, this paper addresses a critical gap by analyzing the exact linguistic subversion and structural reconstruction of the female body and voice. Applying a mimetic approach and qualitative close reading, this study analyzes three specific poems: "Little Red Cap," "Queen Kong," and "Mrs Rip Van Winkle." The findings show that female liberation functions as a continuous, structured journey: developing from the deconstruction of internal psychological and spatial fears in "Little Red Cap," transitioning into a radical subversion of the masculine gaze through humor and desire in "Queen Kong," and culminating in complete somatic independence and autonomous creative expression in "Mrs Rip Van Winkle." Ultimately, this study demonstrates that Duffy’s revisions operate beyond simple thematic commentary; they serve as a radical practice of écriture féminine that successfully weaponizes aesthetic structures to destroy traditional patriarchal binary systems in literature.
