Abstract

In Arabic, there are 4 skills (mahārah), one of which is istima' referring to the ability to listen or comprehend. This study examines the level of understanding of various types of texts, information processing speed, and the ability to recognize nuances in the spoken language. The focus on MAS Bhakti Kerapatan Jujun provides a unique cultural and educational context that may influence research outcomes and offers a new perspective on learning istima' skills in that environment. This research aims to evaluate the mastery level of istima' skills among 10th-grade students at MAS Bhakti Kerapatan Jujun. The research method used was a survey with data collected through interviews as the testing instrument. The study population consisted of all 10th-grade students at MAS Bhakti Kerapatan Jujun, and the researcher used a total sampling technique to gather data. The research results show that students' istima' abilities overall fall into the category of sufficient. The evaluation was conducted through six indicators, indicating that most students have fairly good abilities in identifying letters, distinguishing sounds, understanding vocabulary meanings, and providing responses. However, their ability to comprehend sentences and discourse remains categorized as inadequate. The implications of this study highlight the importance of enhancing students' istima' skills in understanding sentences and discourse in Arabic. Future research could explore more effective teaching strategies to improve students' comprehension of sentences and discourse within the unique cultural and educational context

Abstract

Technology plays a crucial role in helping students enhance their vocabulary mastery. A lack of attention to proper vocabulary learning during the teaching and learning process can pose challenges. Numerous studies have explored EFL students' perceptions of vocabulary development through technology. However, limited research has examined the influence of gender on students’ attitudes in this context. Therefore, this study aims to investigate EFL students’ attitudes toward English vocabulary enhancement concerning gender differences. An explanatory mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating Davis’ (1993) questionnaire on technology integration in language learning and interviews. Quantitative data were gathered from 72 students and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Additionally, qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten participants and examined using thematic analysis. The questionnaire findings indicated that students responded positively to the use and convenience of MALL, with no significant differences observed between male and female students. Moreover, interview results suggested that MALL facilitated vocabulary comprehension and mastery. These findings not only recommend the incorporation of more practical vocabulary learning media but also equip English lecturers with actionable insights to enhance student engagement in the learning process. This study also contributes to English pedagogy by emphasizing the importance of integrating technology into vocabulary learning.

Abstract

The alignment of English teaching materials with international standards was crucial in ensuring effective language learning, particularly under Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. This study aimed to evaluate the conformity of reading texts in the Grade 11 English textbook Bahasa Inggris: English for Change to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an internationally recognized framework for language proficiency ranging from A1 to C2. Fifteen reading texts, which were specifically selected from the textbook’s reading comprehension sections, were analyzed using a quantitative approach. Key textual features examined included word count, average sentence length, average word length, and lexical complexity to determine each text’s CEFR level. The analysis revealed a wide range of levels, from B1 to C2, with several texts exceeding the B1–B2 target level set by the Merdeka Curriculum. This inconsistency suggested a misalignment between textbook materials and curriculum expectations, which might have affected student learning outcomes. The study underscored the importance of systematic textbook evaluation to ensure all reading materials supported the intended language proficiency goals.

Abstract

Pronunciation is crucial while learning English, yet many students struggle to get it right. ELSA Speak and other language learning applications offer self-paced, artificial intelligence-powered pronunciation at one of the Islamic institutes in Jambi. A qualitative descriptive approach was utilized, interviewing five pupils. The findings show that users valued the app’s real-time feedback and phonetic comparison capabilities, which helped them, discover and correct pronunciation mistakes. While most students felt more secure speaking informally, confidence in formal circumstances remained low due to chronic worry. Despite technical limitations, such as problems detecting particular vowel sounds, users considered the app helpful in constantly practicing pronunciation. The study finds that ELSA Speak effective in boosting pronunciation, while other treatments may be needed to address speaking anxiety in formal situations.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the Consciousness-Raising (C-R) method improves students' writing skills and to identify the factors that influence the improvement process. The study was conducted with third-semester students in the English Department, consisting of 16 students. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR) and was carried out in three cycles over a period of 12 weeks, with four meetings including one test in each cycle. The cycles comprised of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Qualitative data was obtained through observation, field notes, and interviews, while quantitative data was obtained from students' writing tests. The results of this study showed improvement in the students' writing skills, as demonstrated by the teaching and learning activities throughout each cycle and the increasing scores of the students' writing tests, which went from 65.45 in cycle 1 to 77.63 in cycle 2 and 88.22 in cycle 3. The decrease in errors in each test cycle also supported this improvement. The observation and field notes indicated that the C-R method increased students' attention and awareness, resulting in more focus and engagement in the learning process. The factors that influenced the improvement of students' writing skills were motivation, the role of the instructor, classroom environment, materials, and media. The C-R method was found to be effective in improving students' writing skills and resolving writing problems. The researcher therefore recommends the use of this method, taking into consideration the supporting factors.
