Abstract

Based on empirical evidence, a significant portion of students encounter challenges in their reading skills. Specifically, many struggle with low reading comprehension, possess a limited vocabulary, and lack effective reading strategies. Moreover, students often experience anxiety while reading due to difficulties in grasping vocabulary and comprehending textual elements. In contrast, this study delved into the reading strategies and reading anxiety of EFL learners concerning their reading comprehension ability. Employing a correlational study design, the research revealed a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.418, indicating a moderate correlation between the independent variables (reading strategy and reading anxiety) and reading comprehension ability. Thus, it can be inferred that there exists a moderate correlation between students' reading strategies, reading anxiety, and their reading comprehension ability.

Abstract

Technology plays a crucial role in helping students enhance their vocabulary mastery. A lack of attention to proper vocabulary learning during the teaching and learning process can pose challenges. Numerous studies have explored EFL students' perceptions of vocabulary development through technology. However, limited research has examined the influence of gender on students’ attitudes in this context. Therefore, this study aims to investigate EFL students’ attitudes toward English vocabulary enhancement concerning gender differences. An explanatory mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating Davis’ (1993) questionnaire on technology integration in language learning and interviews. Quantitative data were gathered from 72 students and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Additionally, qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten participants and examined using thematic analysis. The questionnaire findings indicated that students responded positively to the use and convenience of MALL, with no significant differences observed between male and female students. Moreover, interview results suggested that MALL facilitated vocabulary comprehension and mastery. These findings not only recommend the incorporation of more practical vocabulary learning media but also equip English lecturers with actionable insights to enhance student engagement in the learning process. This study also contributes to English pedagogy by emphasizing the importance of integrating technology into vocabulary learning.

Abstract

This study investigated the perspectives of non-English major students at an Islamic institution of higher education in Indonesia regarding the attributes of effective English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lecturers. The study aimed to identify key factors students consider important in learning English and to explore teaching strategies that enhance learning effectiveness. A quantitative survey method was employed, involving 300 students from various non-English majors. Data were analyzed using ANOVA to examine differences among groups, followed by post-hoc Tukey tests to identify specific group differences. The results indicated that students rated communication skills (M = 4.52, SD = 0.61) and teaching methods (M = 4.47, SD = 0.65) as the most important attributes of effective EFL lecturers. These were followed by lecturer credibility (M = 4.32, SD = 0.68) and knowledge of English (M = 4.29, SD = 0.70). Additional influential factors included the quality of interpersonal relationships between lecturers and students, fairness in assessment, and organization and preparation in teaching. Furthermore, the study found that the strategic use of the mother tongue (L1) in instruction increased students' confidence in using English. The implications of this study underscore the importance of flexible teaching approaches that accommodate diverse learning styles. The use of interactive methods, educational technology, and clear material delivery can significantly enhance the effectiveness of English language teaching in higher education settings.

Abstract

Academic writing is a crucial component of university education, yet it remains one of the most challenging skills for EFL students. This study investigates the perceptions of English Department students at IAIN Kerinci regarding the challenges they face in academic writing. Using a mixed-method approach, the research involved four undergraduate students who had completed academic writing courses in previous semesters. Data were collected through writing performance tests and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative findings indicate that students performed well in content (average score: 7.5) but struggled significantly with writing coherence (4.5). Vocabulary and grammar showed standard capability (6.875 and 6.25). The qualitative results revealed deeper challenges, including difficulties in constructing coherent paragraphs, selecting appropriate vocabulary, applying complex grammar structures, and managing writing anxiety. Contributing factors included lack of motivation, limited reading habits, and insufficient exposure to academic texts. Furthermore, students emphasized the importance of feedback from lecturers and self-reflection as key strategies for development. The findings suggest that while students may be confident in generating ideas, they require more support in expressing those ideas effectively through structured, cohesive academic writing. This study contributes to the field by highlighting the need for integrating linguistic, motivational, and strategic instruction in EFL academic writing contexts.

Abstract

The alignment of English teaching materials with international standards was crucial in ensuring effective language learning, particularly under Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. This study aimed to evaluate the conformity of reading texts in the Grade 11 English textbook Bahasa Inggris: English for Change to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an internationally recognized framework for language proficiency ranging from A1 to C2. Fifteen reading texts, which were specifically selected from the textbook’s reading comprehension sections, were analyzed using a quantitative approach. Key textual features examined included word count, average sentence length, average word length, and lexical complexity to determine each text’s CEFR level. The analysis revealed a wide range of levels, from B1 to C2, with several texts exceeding the B1–B2 target level set by the Merdeka Curriculum. This inconsistency suggested a misalignment between textbook materials and curriculum expectations, which might have affected student learning outcomes. The study underscored the importance of systematic textbook evaluation to ensure all reading materials supported the intended language proficiency goals.
