Abstract

This study aimed to describe the indexicality Minyak Karo in North Sumatera. It focused on describing the ingredients used for making the Minyak Karo, the ritual process of making Minyak Karo, the purpose of the ritual carried out in making Minyak Karo, and performance in the ritual of making Minyak Karo in Padang bulan and Pancur batu regency, North Sumatra. Qualitative method and Anthropolistic perspective were applied in this study. The data collection techniques used was observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The result of the study showed that there were 107 genera and 57 families in making Minyak Karo to treat different diseases, such as kaffir lime/kaffir lime leaves, ship-board leaves, jambar api, bulung patchouli, gagaten tiger, basil, panglai, shallots, garlic, pepper, nutmeg, turmeric, areca nut, tawan gegeh, root areca nut, bamboo root, riman root, pengkih root, and alang-alang. The purpose of the ritual of making Minyak Karo based on anthropolingustic study was to be able to cure diseases that were believed to come from supernatural spirits or diseases sent by people through supernatural means and asked for protection from the spirits of the ancestors.

Abstract

The spread of COVID-19, which is difficult to predict, has caused the community to experience shocks both mentally and psychologically which also affects the social relations of the community down to the lowest level. The culture of gathering in Indonesian society that has become a daily routine has stopped and there is no concern about when it will recover. The cracks for the sake of grazing in our society are beginning to be felt. People began to experience panic anxiety so that government recommendations and religious institutions were ignored by some people with logical defects and put forward emotional sentimentality. In that condition, social capital in synergy with local wisdom can be a solution so that social anxiety and fractures do not occur.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate and reveal the spoken myths and verbal stories conveyed by the locals and how such social phenomena have constructed the existing local wisdom at Taman Cadika Pramuka (TCP) Medan. A descriptive qualitative method with narrative semiotics was applied in this study as one of the semiotics approaches. It focused on the narrative in the form of myths and verbal stories (folklore). Therefore, the data were obtained through both fieldwork and library study. They were collected through observation, documents, and interviews about the raised question addressed to the name of Paya Badau. The applied narrative semiotic as one of the semiotic approaches has enabled the writer to find and reveal five existing myths and verbal stories of 'Paya Badau' attributed as the given name of the lake at Cadika park which has brought up some certain positive effects toward the sustainability of the ecosystem. The existence of TCP and its lake, called 'Danau Cadika' (Paya Badau) merely remains significant as a protective green open space (GOS), besides its other functions as one of the flood buffer zones, and seeding centre of rare plants and trees in Medan. Furthermore, the issue of 'Paya Badau' will turn out to be a critical 'sign' for the authorized officers in charge (government), when the water level of the lake raises or overflow after rain. The name has successfully built a harmonious bond of community awareness to protect and conserve TCP as one of the most worthy mutual assets among stakeholders (community, government, private, etc.).

Abstract

The morphology process in forming the words needs a formation component or element of words, an affixation process, a reduplication process, and a composition process. Composition is combining two or more words that create a new meaning. The problem focus of this research was basic composition in narrative passages with basic forms of nouns and adjectives. The method used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used this descriptive qualitative method to describe the basic composition form and affixed composition objectively. The data source used in this research was narrative passage research on the origins of the Jombang Regency. Data were in the form of Indonesian language composition. The research found categories of basic noun composition forms such as (N+N) and (N+Adj). The form of the adjective basic composition category found is (Adj + V) and (Adj + Adj).

Abstract

West Kalimantan has to swear words that are considered unique in each region. The habit of using swear words that are usually done by the community is something that is considered taboo so far. However, swear words can contain negative and positive values, which are often said in everyday life. Swearing or swear a word is a form of venting for someone's frustration and disappointment that is buried in the heart because of an unpleasant situation. This study aimed to describe the forms of a swear words in the Malay language of West Kalimantan. The method used in this study was a qualitative descriptive method. The data was obtained through a literature review and direct interviews with engaging and taking notes. The study results showed that Malay cursing in West Kalimantan community is very varied and has local wisdom. Swear word in Malay is obtained in the form of references, namely state or nature, animal, body parts, activity, professional, and subtle creature.

Abstract

Hoyak tabuik deals with a religious and old tradition from Minangkabau. It passed from the ancerstor to the next generation. It is one of the local wisdom still used in the Pariaman society to recall the Hasan-Hussein death. This study used qualitative research and anthropolinguistic approach. The data were literature from books and interview the Pariamaneses. There are a lot of oral traditions could be taken from the tabuik ceremony, including that all the worst traits should be removed from our lives, and it can be seen that they throw tabuik constructions into the sea. from the result of the study, it can be observed that Hoyak tabuik still do by the community regarding the figures of Hasan and Husen who was killed by their enemy. The symbols in Hoyak tabuik indexed the incident of the chronology of Hasan Husen death.

Abstract

Mandi marpangir is a tradition to clean body and soul at one day before holy Ramadhan and Eid Mubarak. The purpose is to have blessing during Ramadhan month until the day of Eid Mubarak. The purpose of this research was to describe the tradition, cultural values, and local wisdom of Mandi marpangir. This research focused on revitalizing Mandi marpangir according to customs and traditions in Matondang Village. The location of the research was in Matondang Village, Padang Lawas regency. The informants are residents who live in the Matondang Village. The population objects withdrawal is carried out when the researcher selects the entire population in the research location, namely fountains and rivers, which are the places where people do bathing activities. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The data were observation and depth interview. The results of the research showed that the Mandi marpangir is a tradition with a special sacred value in which the community and its surroundings flock to the shower and river by bringing Pangir to perform the bathing ritual together. The Mandi marpangir tradition begins with pounding together the Pangir that has been boiled or brought by the community, which aims to purify ourselves in welcoming the months of Ramadhan and Eid Mubarak.

Abstract

The naming system is a fascinating study because it is not only related to linguistics but also to the culture that lives in a society, likewise, with the naming of villages in the Namo Rambe sub-district. The problem in this study is how the toponomy of village names in the Namo Rambe sub-district uses anthropolinguistic study. This research aims to find the toponymy of village names in the Namo Rambe sub-district. The theory used is the theory of toponymy and anthropolinguistics. The method used is qualitative, with professional recording and note-taking techniques and literature study methods. From the results of the study, it was found that six villages were using the word Namo, one village with the word lau, one village with the word mountain, four villages with elements of flora and fauna, one village with the word house, two villages related to Hope and the naming of the village with seven standing processes. The naming system for Namo Rambe Sub-district villages shows cultural values still preserved in this community.

Abstract

Umpasa is a kind of rhyme used by the Batak Toba tribe in traditional events. Every umpasa conveyed undoubtedly has meaning, and it becomes a guideline for the Batak Toba. This study aims to find the scientific lexicon contained in umpasa, and the meaning of the umpasa. The data is taken from Jambar Hata Dongan Tu Ulaon Adat. Data collection is done through observation and note-taking techniques. After the data is collected, the data is analyzed using Miles and Huberman's analysis, which consists of three stages: the data reduction stage, the data presentation stage, and the data conclusion/verification stage. The result of this study was the lexicon found in umpasa Batak Toba consists of natural knowledge of flora and fauna. Furthermore, the umpasa in Batak Toba functions as a prayer or hope. So, in the example, the Batak Toba characterizes human traits or characteristics from parts of flora and fauna.

Abstract

In its development, culture or tradition is born along with the community's needs in an environment. Thus, tradition will be the characteristic that distinguishes it from other regions. Furthermore, this growing tradition aims to unite the community and provide wise contributions to the community. And this is what is then called local wisdom. One tradition that is still maintained is Managakgen Rumah in Tabuyung village, Mandailing Natal district. The research method used in this study is qualitative, using descriptive methods, which describe phenomena that occur in the field. From the research results, it can be seen that this tradition contains a profound meaning about Gotong Royong. Through the Menagakgen tradition of this house, it strengthens the villagers' cohesiveness, brotherhood, and hospitality.
