Abstract

The use of ChatGPT as a generative artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly integrated into daily communication as a complimentary chatbot that assists individuals in resolving inquiries. ChatGPT's ease is also being discussed in the educational context, including in language teaching. Although previous studies have examined the use of artificial intelligence in English language teaching, limited studies investigate the possibilities and constraints of ChatGPT in enhancing students' critical thinking abilities in writing from the educators' viewpoint, especially senior high school level educators. Therefore, this study examines English teachers' perspectives on utilizing ChatGPT to improve students' critical thinking skills in English writing sessions. Employing a mixed-method design, insights were obtained from qualitative data of interviews with six teachers and triangulated with quantitative survey responses from 20 teachers. Findings reveal the teachers' recognition of ChatGPT's ability to facilitate individualized learning and improve instructional effectiveness. However, there are remaining concerns that educators are apprehensive about, particularly regarding the students' overdependence on AI, which may hinder the advancement of critical thinking abilities. This study offers a framework for the efficient use of AI tools in L2 instruction to enhance students' critical thinking skills, providing valuable recommendations for instructors aiming to align technological improvements with pedagogical principles. Further research utilizing larger sample sizes in an experimental context should be conducted to yield more robust conclusions.

Abstract

This study was designed to compare the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of EFL written text in CLIL and Non-CLIL classes. The study enrolled two groups of undergraduate students from the State University of Malang, Indonesia: an experimental CLIL class (N = 50 students; 22 males and 28 females) and a non-CLIL as control class (N = 50 students; 19 males and 31 females). Students' essays were evaluated quantitatively using some aspects of linguistic proficiency, such as complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The errors were classified as syntactic, morphological, lexical, lexicogram, spelling, and punctuation mistakes. The findings indicated that both CLIL and non-CLIL methods produced comparable complexity, accuracy, fluency, syntactic, morphological, lexicogram, and spelling scores in two groups of students. Meanwhile, for complexity and lexical values, the CLIL and Non-CLIL methods produced significantly different average scores, with the application of the non-CLIL method being higher. On the punctuation variable, the CLIL method can significantly improve the assessment. Several possible explanations for the increase in complexity, accuracy, and fluency include a preference for the English standard, the course's assessment criteria, and practice effects. The findings of this study also provide additional pedagogical implications.

Abstract

Prior studies on corrective feedback have highlighted the effect of feedback on students writing accuracy. In this present study, the impacts of corrective feedback on students’ writing performance; grammatical accuracy, complexity, fluency, content and organization, appropriateness, argumentation, interpersonal, textual, lexical were examined. Participants were 96 students who were assigned into different groups to accept written corrective feedback, content and organization of ideas, multilateral feedback (i.e., on grammatical accuracy, complexity, fluency, appropriateness, argumentation, interpersonal, textual, lexical), and control group that did not accept any feedback during learning sessions. Pre-test, post-test and delayed post-test and weekly writing revisions were carried out. The results showed that the four experiment groups showed significant improvements. The results of this study showed that students had language learning potential which can be enhanced when teachers provide corrective feedbacks. This study suggested that students’ writing skills can be improved by providing sustained feedback.

The study yielded descriptive data, shedding light on the program's impact on participants' professionalism. The findings revealed a significant enhancement in the participants' professional competencies. This improvement is evident in their expanded knowledge of pedagogical content, as well as their heightened skills in preparing all facets related to the English language teaching (ELT) process. This encompasses the creation of ELT materials, instructional media, the utilization of diverse teaching, and school administrative management. The significance of this research lies in its contribution to the ongoing discourse on teacher professional development in the context of English language education. The study's insights could inform educational policymakers, curriculum designers, and teacher training institutions about the strengths and areas of improvement within the program. Abstract

The shift from traditional to digital textbooks in education brings both prospects and hurdles, especially in teaching English to young learners. Despite the widespread adoption of digital textbooks, their impact on students' language skills and teacher-student interaction needs more exploration. This study aims to thoroughly evaluate how digital textbooks affect English comprehension and production among young learners and teachers. The research conducted at SDS Islam Ar-Risalah Jember involved two teachers and eleven students, employing a descriptive qualitative method. Observations, interviews, and document analysis were utilized to gather data, analyzed through the Miles and Huberman method, pinpointing trends in digital textbook usage and understanding. Results suggest digital English textbooks significantly improve young learners' and teachers' English skills, enhancing speaking, reading, writing, and listening abilities. These resources offer a dynamic and interactive educational experience. However, transitioning to digital tools introduces challenges like infrastructural limitations and the need for teaching method adjustments. Addressing these issues is essential for fully leveraging digital textbooks in education. In conclusion, while digital textbooks can boost English language mastery among young learners and teachers, realizing this potential requires overcoming certain technological and pedagogical obstacles.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of interactional feedback on students writing skills. One hundred participants enrolled in an intermediate EFL course at the State University of Malang, Indonesia, were recruited for this research. The quantitative method was employed for data analysis. The primary data analysis method used was the ANCOVA test, followed by the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. The results reveal that the dependent variables in the experimental group exhibited higher means compared to the control group. The ANCOVA test show that the dependent variables (writing length, accuracy, and effectiveness) were significantly affected by the addition of feedback (p = 0.000). However, no significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups regarding accuracy (p = 0.425) and writing length variables (p = 0.731). As a result, interactional feedback significantly impacted EFL students writing ability. This result highlights the need for thorough planning and preparation, including preparing ESL/EFL students through explicit instruction prior to peer review, to ensure that learners interactional feedback is useful. The findings suggest that EFL teachers should carefully select feedback styles that align with the intended purpose of providing feedback. For instance, more specific feedback options may prove more effective in assisting students in revising and improving their written assignments. Finally, this study provides valuable recommendations for further research in this field.
