Abstract

Diarrhea remains a significant public health concern in Indonesia, particularly among toddlers, with high morbidity and mortality rates largely influenced by environmental sanitation. Despite extensive efforts, many regions continue to exhibit inadequate sanitation conditions. This study aimed to analyze the association between environmental sanitation factors and the incidence of diarrhea in children aged 12–59 months in the Kanjilo Health Center area, Gowa Regency. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional design, the study involved 331 purposively selected mothers of children under five from a population of 1,906. Data collection utilized structured questionnaires and was analyzed using the chi-square test. Findings revealed a significant relationship between diarrhea incidence and both the source of drinking water (p = 0.018) and waste bin condition (p = 0.033), while the wastewater disposal system was not significantly associated (p = 0.074). Among the participants, 39.9% reported toddlers with diarrhea episodes, indicating substantial exposure to environmental risk factors. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to enhance water safety and solid waste management in rural health settings. Strengthening sanitation infrastructure may substantially reduce diarrhea incidence among toddlers, thereby improving child health outcomes in rural Indonesian communities.

Abstract

Nutrition remains a major public health issue in Indonesia, significantly affecting the quality of human resources. One persistent nutritional problem is stunting, which continues to impact many communities, including Pacciongang Hamlet, where data showed a stunting prevalence of 11.1%. The program included problem identification, development of a problem-solving framework, and implementation through a series of activities: pre-test, health education, post-test, and practical training. One key intervention was a demonstration of preparing complementary food using local ingredients—specifically, Moringa leaves processed into nutritious pudding. Moringa was chosen due to its high protein content and availability in the village.  To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention, pre- and post-tests were conducted to assess participants' knowledge on stunting, exclusive breastfeeding, and the benefits of Moringa. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in participants' understanding, with a p-value < 0.05, indicating a meaningful difference in knowledge before and after the counseling sessions. Additionally, the demonstration session successfully empowered participants to prepare and serve Moringa pudding following the given recipe. This initiative not only increased awareness of stunting prevention but also provided a practical solution using affordable and accessible local resources. In conclusion, the health education and training activities were effective in enhancing community knowledge and skills related to child nutrition and stunting prevention. This community-based approach highlights the importance of local resource utilization and participatory education in improving public health outcomes.

Abstract

The use of pesticides by spraying can cause health problems such as pesticide poisoning, respiratory system problems which can affect lung capacity and can cause death if help is not given immediately. This study aims to determine the factors that influence lung capacity disorders in pesticide-using vegetable farmers in Kanreapia Village, Gowa Regency, Indonesia. The type of research used is quantitative with an analytical approach and uses a cross sectional study design. The population in this study was 216 farmers so that the sample size in this study was 83 farmers. The instruments used in this research were questionnaires and spirometry. The results of this study show that there is a relationship between spraying method p-value 0.003 and lung capacity, while age p-value 0.484, working duration p-value 0.117, working period p-value 0.959 and use of personal protective equipment p-value 0.367 have an insignificant relationship with lung capacity. Working period is the variable that has the greatest influence on lung capacity. It is recommended that farmer group leaders directly monitor work in the field regarding pesticide spraying carried out by farmer group members which could endanger them due to the risk of exposure to pesticides.

Abstract

Exposure of school-age children to information and environmental influences that may encourage smoking behavior remains a critical concern, particularlybecause their understanding of the dangers of smoking is generally still limited.  This article presents the results of a study aimed at measuring the effect ofcounseling on the dangers of smoking on the knowledge of students at SD Inpres Peo. The research employed a quantitative method using a one-group pre-experimental design, specifically the One-Group Pre-Test and Post- Test model. The study population consisted of all fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-gradestudents at SD Inpres Peo, with a total sample of 62 students. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ knowledge after the counseling intervention. During the pre-test, most students demonstrated a low level of knowledge (58%), whereas after the intervention, the majority showed anadequate level of knowledge (67.8%). Results from the Paired Sample T-Test revealed that the mean knowledge score increased from 7.97 to 9.11 following the intervention (p = 0.000). The educational program on the dangers of smoking had a positive impact on increasing students’ knowledge, particularly among fifth-grade students. Support from teachers and the school principal plays an essential role in ensuring the sustainability of the program through thematic learning activities and other school initiatives. The program is expected to foster early behavioral protection and strengthen social norms within the schoolenvironment. Despite these positive outcomes, several challenges remain, including student motivation, program sustainability, and the need for long-term evaluation to ensure behavioral change. The expected outcomes of the program extend beyond improved knowledge scores, encompassing the development of collective awareness and the reinforcement of preventive values.
