Abstract

Old Nypa fruit (Nypa fruticans) often becomes waste in Salo Palai Village, East Kalimantan, due to a lack of knowledge regarding its utilization. Therefore, this activity aims to empower the community through training on processing old Nypa fruit into flour and nuggets, enhancing economic value, and reducing waste by utilizing local natural resources. The method consists of socialization by an expert speaker followed by a workshop on processing Nypa fruit. The activities were attended by members of the forest farmer group in Salo Palai Village. The outcome of this activity includes the production of Nypa fruit flour and nuggets made from Nypa flour. The results indicate that the residents of Salo Palai Village, particularly the members of the farmer group, are capable of applying information and technology related to processing aged Nypa fruit into flour and nuggets.

Abstract

Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia are common health problems in Argo Mulyo Village, Sepaku Sub-district, North Penajam Paser Regency. These diseases require a preventive approach through the utilization of family medicinal plants (TOGA) such as ginger, turmeric, and temulawak, which have been proven effective in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This empowerment activity aims to increase community knowledge, particularly among the TP-PKK group, regarding the use of TOGA as a preventive measure against hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. The activity was conducted on September 7-8, 2024, in Argo Mulyo Village. The methods used included education, training on the production of herbal powder from ginger, turmeric, and temulawak, and the planting of TOGA in the village land. Evaluation was carried out through pretest and posttest assessments to measure the participants' knowledge improvement. The results of the educational activity related to hypertension and hypercholesterolemia showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge, with an average pretest score of 60.23 rising to 76.51 in the posttest. The results of the herbal powder-making activity also showed an improvement in knowledge, with the pretest average score at 71.76 and 92.94 in the posttest. Additionally, the herbal powder products produced by the participants met the established standards. Abstract

Anemia was a condition characterized by a small number of red blood cells and was commonly experienced by adolescent girls due to menstruation and increased nutritional needs during growth. In 2023, the highest number of anemia cases in the working area of Puskesmas Loa Bakung, Samarinda, was found among female students of SMP Negeri 16 Samarinda, with a prevalence of 25% out of 190 cases. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between iron intake, protein intake, and the habit of skipping meals with the incidence of anemia among female students at SMP Negeri 16 Samarinda. A cross-sectional design was used for this study. As much as 72 respondents were selected with purposive sampling. Data for this study was collected through haemoglobin (Hb) testing, interviews using the SQ-FFQ questionnaire and a meal-skipping questionnaire. A total of 37 (51.4%) female students suffered from anemia, 56 (77.8%) female students consumed adequate protein intake, and 67 (93.1%) female students had insufficient daily iron intake. As much as 55 (76.4%) female students did not regularly eat breakfast. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between iron intake (p=0.023), protein intake (p=0.010), and the habit of skipping breakfast (p=0.038) with anemia. However, this study didn’t find any association between skipping lunch (p=0.207) or dinner (p=0.658) with anemia.
