Abstract

Abstract

Kelulut bee propolis (Heterotrigona itama) is one of the products produced by bees in the form of sap as a protective bee hive from predators and is commonly used by the community for treatment. This species also produces propolis more than stinging bees, but its potential has not been explored much. Purpose of this study was to determine the secondary metabolites and antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract of kelulut bee propolis from Kutai Kartanegara. Propolis was extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent and evaporated and then carried out phytochemical screening and antioxidant activity test using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil), ethanol extract of propolis was made in concentrations of 25 ppm, 50 ppm, 100 ppm, 500 ppm, 1000 ppm. The yield value of the propolis ethanol extract was 36% and the phytochemical test showed the presence of flavonoid, alkaloid and phenolic compounds and the IC50 value of the propolis extract was 282.92 ppm. This indicates that kelulut bee propolis containing these secondary metabolites has weak antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is one of the essential oil producing plants known as Lemongrass oil with the main content of citral compounds. Lemongrass essential oil is known to have antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of lemongrass oil can be used for skin care in the form of a peel off gel mask. The purpose of this study was to formulate a peel off gel mask preparation from lemongrass essential oil (Cymbopogon citratus) and to know the results of the physical evaluation of the peel off gel mask. The peel off gel mask was made in three formulas with different concentrations of PVA, namely F1 (10%), F2 (13%), and F3 (16%). Physical evaluation tests include organoleptic tests, homogeneity, viscosity, pH, dispersion, and drying time. The peel off gel mask in the three formulas was obtained in the form of a thick gel, white in color, and had a characteristic lemongrass smell. The results obtained based on the physical evaluation showed that the three formulas had met the required standard parameters.

Abstract

Teluk Pemedas is one of the sub-districts in the Samboja sub-district, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan Province. Previous health examination data showed that the presentation of hypertension in the Teluk Pamedas community was 28% and hypercholesterolemia was 20%. The use of herbal plants as an alternative treatment has been widely used. Plants that have antihypertensive and antihypercholesterolemic activity are rosella flowers, pandan leaves, and cinnamon. Research results show that this plant can lower blood pressure for hypertension sufferers. The aim of carrying out this activity is to increase public knowledge about degenerative diseases and the use of local herbal plants to add economic value. This activity was carried out in two stages, with an education method regarding degenerative diseases, then continued with a training method for making herbal tea preparations from a combination of rosella flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa), pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii). The partner of this activity is Dasawisma Teluk Pamedas sub-district, Samboja, Kutai Kartanegara East Kalimantan. This activity provides benefits to the community regarding efforts to prevent degenerative diseases and implement a healthy lifestyle and improve skills in processing herbal plants.

Abstract

Non-alcoholic fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is one of the most prevalent lipid disorders worldwide. In the pursuit of drug discovery and development, animal modeling is crucial to elucidate the mechanisms underlying a disease. One form of animal model of NAFLD involves the induction of a high-fat diet (HFD). However, most HFDs exhibit complexity in the formulation, and commercial HFDs tend to be costly. This study aimed to formulate an HFD feed with minimal ingredients that are capable of inducing liver steatosis. This study commenced with the development of 4 dietary formulations (F1, F2, F3, and F4) comprising various food components with specific proportions and treatments. A proximate analysis was conducted for each formulation. Subsequently, the most promising formulation was administered to the rats for 14 days. On day 15, liver organs were harvested for histological analysis. The results showed that among the four formulations developed, HFD F4 exhibited the best physical appearance and nutritional proximate components, characterized by its stability in form and high fat (41.8%), high protein (21.5%), and low carbohydrate (23.2%) content. Histology examination revealed that two weeks of administration of F4 administration led to severe degeneration, inflammation, and necrosis in rat hepatocytes compared to the normal group (p < 0.001), thus confirming that HFD F4 may be developed as an inducer of steatosis in rats.  Keywords: experimental animal model; high-fat diet; liver steatosis ; NAFLD
