Abstract

The synthesis of various local wisdom values in the Tengger society in terms of utilization of ethnobotany resources as herbal products for health has long been existed in the scope of the Tengger locality and surrounding areas. The comparative advantage of Tengger ethnobotany certainly has potential that can be developed through certain strategies in order to be able to further contribute to the operationalization of the research, development, and application of science and technology (RISBANGRAPIPTEK) in the Field of Health and Medicine 2005–2025 towards a state of adequacy of raw materials and preparations of standardized herbal medicinal products and Indonesia branded for the Indonesian people. Therefore, the research question raised is the formulation of a strategy that must be immediately created and can be used as a reference for the activities of Tenggerese etnobotanical resource development to become a superior branded Indonesian biotechnology commercial product. The sampling method in this study was done by purposive sampling. The method of data collection was done by observation, interviews which included primary data and literature studies which were secondary data. The research method used was descriptive and analytic. The results showed that: 1) the perception map of the Tengger Society towards medicinal plants was classified as a moderate and the relationship of the characteristics of the Tengger Society did not have a close correlation to herbal medicines with a value of r less than 0.8. 2) Determinants that influence the influence of society on traditional medicine are age (X1), income (X3), and education (X4), while number of family dependents (X2) not significant effect. Keywords: determinant factors, ethnobotany, perception

Abstract

The research was conducted at Kanigoro Village in Pagelaran Sub-District, District of Malang from May to July 2003. The Objectives of the research are (1) describing the perception of farm household about small scale cattle farm, (2) studying about the factors which influence farm household’s access to cattle in Kanigoro Village. Forty five farmers were selected using purposive random sampling method. Descriptive and economic farming system analysis were applied to the data available. The research found that farm households who kept cattle have perception that rearing cattle could be used for saving, used for land cultivation (i.e brujul) and covered leisure as well. Farm households who did not keep cattle have perception that they had lack of family labour, preferring   to rear other ruminants (i.e goats, buffaloes and milking cows) and did not have enough cash to buy cattle. The factors which influence farm household’s access to cattle were difficulties in accessing feed resources (i.e grass), fluctuated cattle price and difficulties in finding the share holders (penggaduh). Based on these, it is suggested that preliminary research concerning the perception of the local farm households to cattle farming, feed resources and labour availability should be conducted prior to establish an area as the centre of cattle farming development.

Abstract

A research group of Animal Science Faculty of Brawijaya University introduced and implemented Frozen sexed semen Artificial Insemination to 120 beef cattle farmers in Palang Village, Tuban Regency, East Java, from 2017 to 2019. The result of the program reported that the success rate of the technology is quite high, with the birth rate of male claves up to 80%. However, farmers’ adoption rate of the technology was relatively low. This research aims to evaluate factors that affected the adoption rate including the technology, characteristics of respondents, and the extension agents. Primary data were collected through a census of 120 farmers involved in the program and in-depth interviews with stakeholders. Secondary data were collected through related documents including reports of the programs, Statistics, and other related documents. This research utilized Quantitative and qualitative analyses. Data of the study indicated that respondents have neutral perceptions of the Frozen Semen Sexing Artificial Insemination. Although male calves relatively have a higher price, more than 50% of respondents did not expect specific sexing for the calves. In-depth interview data revealed that the success of the Artificial insemination technology is more valuable for the farmers rather than the sexing. Characteristics of respondents and the extension agents played significant roles in the adoption rate of the Frozen Sexed Semen Artificial Insemination technology adoption in Palang Village, Tuban Regency, East Java.

Abstract

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) poses significant threats to livestock production systems globally, particularly cloven-hoofed animals. Indonesia's recent FMD outbreak, following 35 years of disease-free status, created substantial economic challenges for the dairy sector. Despite the scale of the outbreak, limited research has focused on its specific financial impacts on smallholder dairy farms, creating a critical knowledge gap for effective policy development. This study analyses the financial impact of foot and mouth disease (FMD) on dairy farming, focusing on changes in revenue, costs, and profitability before and after the outbreak. Through descriptive and input?output analysis, economic losses were quantified on the basis of structured surveys and secondary data from affected dairy farmers. The findings indicate that the FMD significantly reduced milk production revenue (-8%) while increasing overall farm costs (+6%), leading to a drastic 84% decline in farm profits. Increased spending on veterinary treatments, feed supplementation, and transportation further exacerbated financial instability, whereas a slight increase in livestock sales (+11%) served as a short-term coping mechanism. These results highlight the need for enhanced disease control measures, financial assistance programs, and policy interventions to support affected farmers. Implementing effective vaccination strategies, improving biosecurity protocols, and establishing government-backed economic relief programs can mitigate the financial burden of FMD on the dairy sector. This study contributes to the limited literature on the economic consequences of livestock disease outbreaks in Indonesia and emphasises the need for long-term resilience strategies to sustain dairy farm profitability and stability in disease-prone regions.

Abstract

Goat farming is an essential livelihood strategy for rural communities, providing substantial economic and social advantages. However, there remains a vague understanding of the underlying motivations driving smallholder goat farmers' engagement, particularly in contexts with diverse socio-demographics and resource limitations. This study aimed to determine the most influential factors in goat-farming decisions by conducting a cross-sectional survey of 50 smallholder goat farmers. Data collection encompassed socio-demographic variables, as well as access to capital, infrastructure, market conditions, and policy support. Results revealed that capital and infrastructure significantly outweighed age, education, and farming experience in shaping farmers’ level of involvement. Local markets received favorable ratings, but inconsistent government support highlighted significant policy gaps. Larger households benefited from greater labor availability, yet did not consistently adopt best practices. These findings highlight the primacy of resource-based and socio-familial factors in shaping smallholder motivation and illustrate the need for targeted interventions. Enhanced collaboration among government agencies, cooperatives, and community groups may promote more resilient and profitable goat-farming systems.
