Abstract

This study investigates how character education values are communicated and internalized through digital Islamic preaching on TikTok, focusing on the sermons of Gus Iqdam, an influential Indonesian preacher whose content resonates with millions of young followers. While his videos are widely consumed and celebrated for their humor and relatability, many audience members engage with the content passively, without translating the moral messages into real-life behavior. This research aims to explore the core character values conveyed in his digital sermons and assess their impact on audience comprehension and behavioral change. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through systematic content observation of selected TikTok sermons, semi-structured interviews with 50 active followers, and content analysis of the values embedded in the sermons. The findings reveal that Gus Iqdam promotes key moral values such as honesty, patience, empathy, respect, and responsibility through storytelling, humor, and everyday analogies. His casual language and culturally grounded delivery style serve as a bridge that connects moral lessons with the lived realities of young audiences. Interview data indicate that many followers felt personally influenced to reflect and act upon these values, although not all engagement led to transformation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how digital religious content can function as a medium of informal moral education, offering valuable insights for educators, preachers, and digital content creators aiming to reach and impact today’s digital-native generation.

Abstract

Presented in this field research was conducted qualitatively explorative to answer important problems related to why pesantren in Indonesia feel comfortable and enjoy face-to-face alignment in the Covid-19 pandemic. The samples were taken at 11 pesantren in central and East Java that organized face-to-face learning. The data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation are then analyzed through Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis (IPA) using john dewey's theory of progressivism analysis. The results showed that pesantren still exists as an Islamic educational institution in the midst of a pandemic because 1) the tradition of the value of blessings, the strong value of blessings from ulama figures, Kiai, Ustaz can only be obtained when students interact directly (face-to-face) being the first factor why face-to-face learning is still implemented, 2) Pesantren is open and adaptive to follow the development of the covid-19 situation, Applying strict health protocols, quarantine santri when returning to pesantren, then close the pesantren environment from outside influences including santri guardians up to the safe situation and get permission from the covid-19 task force. 3) Utilization of information and communication technology, use of social media Facebook, WhatsApp, and pesantren website to provide information to stakeholders that pesantren is safe and comfortable for face-to-face learning. 4) Stakeholder synergy, demonstrated by the cooperation of parents, communities, and governments in understanding the role of pesantren as a safe institution for face-to-face learning. Referring to the results of this study, strengthening the existence of pesantren and stakeholders in the world of education, especially in Indonesia in implementing face-to-face learning in the era of the covid-19 pandemic, along with the readiness of the world of education towards the era of society 5.0.

Abstract

This article explores the contributions of Bank Sampah (Waste Bank) to economic empowerment and community participation in waste management, based on a systematic review of literature published between 2014 and 2024. The review highlights how Bank Sampah initiatives serve as effective tools for generating supplementary income for low-income households, promoting entrepreneurship, and fostering local economic development through waste recycling. In addition to their economic impact, Bank Sampah programs contribute significantly to community engagement by encouraging residents to take an active role in waste segregation and environmental stewardship. The review identifies the challenges that affect the sustainability of these programs, including financial dependency, infrastructure limitations, and cultural barriers. Despite these challenges, the Bank Sampah model has demonstrated considerable potential in enhancing social capital, empowering marginalized groups, and promoting environmental awareness. The findings underscore the need for policy support, robust community education, and strategic partnerships to ensure the long-term viability and scalability of Bank Sampah programs. This review provides valuable insights into how waste management initiatives can contribute to sustainable socio-economic development and environmental sustainability at the community level.

Abstract

Applying taklif to children's students is part of learning religious traditions (Islamic law), which aims to shape Islamic character from an early age. In implementing taklif, there are challenges, especially related to children's cognitive limitations in understanding abstract sharia laws such as mubah and makruh. In addition, traditional implementation methods are often ineffective in conveying the concept of taklif to children. This study aims to analyze the application of taklif to child santri by learning about religious traditions, identifying factors that influence their understanding, and evaluating the effectiveness of taklif learning methods applied in pesantren. Through a case study approach, this research collects data through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to thoroughly understand the process of learning taklif as Sharia law in pesantren. The results showed that children more easily understand the obligatory and sunnah laws because they are concrete and often practiced in everyday life. In contrast, the laws of mubah and makruh are challenging to understand because they are more abstract. The pesantren environment, parental involvement, and learning methods such as short lectures, hands-on practice, and educational games are important in improving Santri's understanding. This research provides recommendations for pesantren to develop more adaptive and innovative learning methods for learning Taklif in children and additional insights for parents about the importance of traditionalizing an understanding of Islamic law early on in children.

Abstract

This study examines how Islamic schools in urbanized areas of East Kutai, a district in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, navigate pedagogical adaptation, maintain religious authenticity, and address the impact of student diversity. While East Kutai is geographically a district, its urbanized centers, particularly in towns like Sangatta, have seen rapid development, leading to an increasingly diverse student population and a blend of traditional and modern educational approaches. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collected survey data from 309 students and conducted interviews with 36 teachers, parents, and students across four Islamic schools in the region. The findings reveal that blended learning models enhance engagement but require contextual adaptation to preserve religious depth. Privately funded schools demonstrate greater adaptability, while government-funded madrasahs face resource limitations. Additionally, cultural diversity enriches classroom discussions but complicates standardized learning. The study highlights the need for hybrid pedagogical strategies integrating digital tools without compromising theological integrity. Policymakers must address funding disparities and support teacher training to ensure inclusive, high-quality IRE. This research contributes to the discourse on religious education by proposing a contextualized digital adaptation model, offering practical recommendations for sustaining Islamic educational identity in urbanized settings.

Method – Using interpretative and critical discourse analysis, the research sampled Gus Miftah’s TikTok videos, user comments, and YouTube sermons. Linguistic and rhetorical patterns were coded and triangulated to ensure analytical reliability. Result – Findings revealed that his succinct, humor-infused style successfully engaged younger audiences yet incited controversy regarding doctrinal fidelity, underscoring the delicate balance between accessibility and theological rigor in digital religious discourse. Implication – This tension highlights the need for ethical, pedagogical, and communicative recalibration, prompting religious figures to reconcile user-friendly presentation with doctrinal depth. Future efforts must address algorithmic constraints and community-driven discourse to maintain credibility. Originality/Value – The study addresses a gap by analyzing how TikTok’s algorithmic culture and participatory audience mechanics shape contemporary da’wah. It offers novel insights into how digital media redefine religious authority and communication in online contexts.
