Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze the role of Civic Education as a preventive strategy against radicalism in the digital era among Generation Z. Civic Education does not merely function to instill an understanding of citizens’ rights and obligations, but also plays a strategic role in equipping young people with values of tolerance, nationalism, and anti-radicalism. This research employed a qualitative approach and was conducted at Pattimura University. The research subjects consisted of students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics and Business, and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation, while data analysis was carried out using an interactive analysis model. The findings indicate that Civic Education has made a positive contribution to building students’ early awareness of the threats of radicalism through the internalization of the values of Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), democracy, human rights, tolerance, and diversity. Civic Education is considered an effective preventive solution when implemented through contextual, dialogical, and participatory learning approaches, such as critical discussions, case studies, problem-based learning, project-based learning, and experiential learning. In addition to classroom learning, student organizations and the positive use of digital media play an important role in strengthening values of moderation and counter-radicalism. However, major challenges include low levels of digital literacy among students, the rapid spread of radical content on social media, algorithm-driven ideological bias, and the persistence of conventional and theoretical teaching methods. Therefore, preventing radicalism in higher education requires synergy among Civic Education, lecturers, universities, student organizations, and the active awareness of students in the digital era.
