Abstract

This research paper investigates students' responses to the implementation of interactive dialogue techniques in speaking classes, aiming to enhance their English speaking skills. Recognizing the challenges faced by learners, such as anxiety and lack of confidence, the study emphasizes the need for innovative, interactive teaching methods that foster meaningful communication. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation at MTs Muhammadiya 15 Medan. Findings reveal that students experienced increased confidence, improved speaking fluency, and greater classroom engagement when engaging in dialogue-based activities. However, challenges such as limited vocabulary and difficulties with spontaneous speaking were also noted, highlighting the necessity for scaffolding strategies to support language acquisition. The study concludes that while interactive dialogue techniques positively impact students' speaking abilities, effective implementation requires targeted support to overcome inherent challenges, ultimately contributing to more dynamic and student-centered language instruction.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers’ and students’ perspectives on the use of word puzzle games in teaching English vocabulary at SMP Swasta Methodist 9 Medan. The research aims to explore how these games are implemented and how they influence students’ vocabulary learning. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving one English teacher and 23 eighth-grade students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation. The data analysis process included data preparation, reading and reflection, coding and categorization, and theme development. The findings reveal that word puzzle games were effectively implemented as a student-centered learning activity that enhanced classroom engagement and reduced monotony in vocabulary instruction. Both the teacher and students expressed positive perceptions toward the use of these games. Students reported increased motivation, improved vocabulary understanding, better collaboration, and greater confidence in learning. Meanwhile, the teacher perceived word puzzle games as a valuable tool to support vocabulary mastery, stimulate critical thinking, and foster a positive and interactive classroom environment. However, several challenges were identified, including variations in students’ proficiency levels, time management constraints, classroom noise, and the need for thorough preparation. Despite these challenges, the study concludes that word puzzle games serve as an effective gamification strategy in teaching vocabulary when supported by proper planning and effective classroom management.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is essential in English learning, especially for elementary students in EFL contexts. However, many learners face difficulties in understanding, retaining, and using vocabulary due to conventional teaching methods that rely heavily on memorization. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of language games in improving students’ vocabulary mastery, identify the most effective types of games, and analyze their impact on motivation and classroom participation. The research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. It was conducted at SD Sultan Iskandar Muda with 40 fourth-grade students. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, observations, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results showed significant improvement in vocabulary achievement, with mean scores increasing from 58.4 (pre-test) to 68.7 (Cycle I) and 82.3 (Cycle II). The percentage of students achieving the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) rose from 30% to 55% and then 85%. Qualitative findings revealed that games such as word matching, memory cards, guessing games, and role-play effectively enhanced vocabulary retention, motivation, participation, and students’ confidence in learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of ChatGPT Voice as an AI-mediated speaking partner in enhancing English speaking ability among EFL learners from an Applied Linguistics perspective. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving undergraduate students who experienced difficulties in spontaneous oral communication, low speaking confidence, and limited access to speaking partners. Data were collected through classroom observation, transcript documentation, and semi-structured interviews during several chatbot-assisted speaking sessions. The findings revealed significant improvement in five major indicators: fluency improvement, confidence increase, vocabulary expansion, response length, and speaking anxiety reduction. Learners gradually produced more continuous speech, longer responses, richer vocabulary, and greater interactional participation during human–AI conversation. The study also found that ChatGPT created a low-pressure communicative environment that encouraged learners to speak more freely without fear of negative judgment. In addition, AI-generated follow-up questions and conversational prompts stimulated discourse continuity and lexical development. The findings support communicative interaction theory, technology-mediated language learning, and AI-assisted willingness to communicate frameworks, which emphasize that oral proficiency develops through sustained and meaningful interaction. This study contributes a new perspective by positioning chatbot not merely as instructional technology, but as an autonomous communicative scaffold that facilitates human–AI interaction in speaking development. Therefore, chatbot-assisted communication can serve as an effective alternative for English speaking rehearsal in contexts where learners have limited opportunities for authentic conversational practice with native speakers.

Abstract

Speaking ability and creativity are essential competencies in English language learning. However, many students still lack confidence in speaking in front of the class and experience difficulties in developing and expressing ideas creatively. This community service program aimed to enhance students’ creativity and speaking skills through English storytelling training at MTs Al Washliyah Batang Serangan. The program was conducted over three months using several methods, including socialization, training, guided practice, mentoring, and evaluation. The training materials covered basic storytelling techniques, story structure development, the use of expressions, intonation, gestures, and speaking skill improvement. The results showed significant improvements in students’ performance. The percentage of students who were willing to perform in front of the class increased from 40% to 85%. In addition, students demonstrated better speaking fluency, pronunciation accuracy, vocabulary mastery, and the ability to organize stories systematically. Their creativity also improved, as reflected in the development of more varied, imaginative, and original story ideas. Furthermore, the storytelling training created a more active, communicative, and enjoyable learning environment. Based on these findings, it is recommended that storytelling be implemented continuously in English language teaching and integrated into school literacy programs to further develop students’ creativity, communication skills, and self-confidence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in evaluating the performance of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) as one of the leading private universities in North Sumatra. The Balanced Scorecard approach is selected because it provides a comprehensive overview of organizational performance through four main perspectives: financial, customer, internal business processes, and learning and growth. This research employs a qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and analysis of institutional documents related to financial management, human resources, academic services, and institutional development. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical technique to illustrate the actual condition of the university’s performance based on the four perspectives of the Balanced Scorecard. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Balanced Scorecard at Universitas Prima Indonesia has supported a more structured and strategic performance evaluation. The financial perspective shows relatively effective resource management in supporting institutional sustainability. The customer perspective reflects a high level of satisfaction among students and stakeholders regarding educational services. From the internal business process perspective, UNPRI demonstrates a systematic governance and quality assurance system. Meanwhile, the learning and growth perspective reveals a strong commitment to developing the competencies of lecturers, staff, and students. This study provides both theoretical and practical contributions to the development of a Balanced Scorecard-based performance evaluation model in higher education. It can also serve as a strategic reference for other universities in improving institutional performance and competitiveness in a sustainable manner.
