Abstract

Clean water is water used for daily needs with quality that meets hygiene requirements. Poor environmental sanitation can increase the deposit of microorganisms in water. Water containing microorganisms can cause disease. This study aims to determine the number of Escherichia coli bacteria and groups of coliform bacteria. This research includes laboratory observational research. Water samples were obtained from springs and community shelters. Identification and numeration using the MPN (most probable number) method. The media used were Lactose Broth (LB), Brillian Green Lactose Broth (BGLB) and EC Broth with three tubes. The results of the study identified the presence of Coliform and E.coli bacteria. The numerical results on Coliform show only one sample that meets the quality standards. The results of the numeration of E.coli bacteria, all samples did not meet the quality standards of the Minister of Health Regulation No. 32 of 2017. Bacterial contamination is thought to be the result of community activities using water sources as a place for bathing and washing. The conclusion of this study is that the water used for the daily needs of the people of Demta is contaminated with coliform and E.coli.

Abstract

Data Hasil Survei pasca POPM pada Bulan November tahun 2021 oleh Program Pengendalian Penyakit Menular (P2PM) Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi Papua untuk wilayah desa sentinel yaitu Koya Tengah melalui evaluasi Pre-TAS Kota Jayapura mengalami kegagalan dalam program POPM filarisiasis, salah satu penyebab kegagalan tersebut diantaranya kurangnya jumlah kader filarisiasis yang terlibat dalam pemberian obat filariasis dan pendampingan minum obat yang diberikan kepada penduduk sasaran yang ada di Kampung Koya Tengah sehingga tidak maksimal. Persiapan masyarakat dilaksanakan dengan mengunjungi warga dari rumah ke rumah di wilayah binaan kader filariasis satu kader filariasis membina 20-30 keluarga sesuai dengan kondisi daerah. Permasalahan berikutnya adalah kurangnya dukungan serta pengetahuan, sikap masyarakat sehingga masih kurangnya informasi yang jelas tentang kegiatan POPM filariasis sehingga rendahnya minat penduduk untuk minum obat. Tujuan pengabdian masyarakat yaitu melakukan perekrutan dan penambahan jumlah kader filariasis serta peningkatan pengetahuan kader dalam memberikan informasi tentang infeksi filariasis kepada masyarakat. Kegiatan pelaksanaan pengabdian pada masyarakat dilakukan selama 7 bulan (Mei-Oktober 2023) di wilayah desa sentinel yaitu Koya Tengah. Kegiatan yang ditawarkan dalam kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah melakukan perekrutan penambahan jumlah kader filariasis puskesmas serta melatih kader melalui peningkatan pengetahuan kader agar lebih berpartisipasi sehingga dapat meningkatkan perilaku kerja kader untuk menjadi lebih baik hal ini dapat menjadi salah satu daya ungkit pencapaian target cakupan POPM Filariasis. Target capaian pengabdian ini yaitu bertambahnya jumlah kader filariasis dari 2 orang menjadi 14 orang, peningkatan pengetahuan masyarakat dari kurang menjadi baik, peningkatan pengetahuan dan sikap kader dari kurang menjadi baik dan terjadi peningkatan pengetahuan dengan skor selisih rata-rata 2,45 dari sebelumnya.

Abstract

Zodia leaves (Evodia suaveolens) are endemic plants of Indonesia originating from Papua, widely known for their natural mosquito-repelling properties. Traditionally, local communities use these leaves by rubbing them directly onto the skin to avoid mosquito and insect bites. Zodia leaves contain active compounds that produce a distinctive aroma disliked by mosquitoes, making them an effective natural repellent. One of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes is malaria, which attacks human red blood cells and is spread through the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes. A high population of mosquito larvae and adults in an area increases the risk of malaria transmission. Although vector control is commonly carried out using synthetic insecticides that provide rapid results, these chemicals may lead to negative effects such as insecticide resistance in mosquitoes and environmental pollution. Therefore, safer and more sustainable alternatives for vector control are urgently needed. The use of zodia leaves as a natural mosquito repellent is considered effective and environmentally friendly. This potential should be further explored as an alternative solution in the prevention of vector-borne diseases, particularly malaria, using an approach that prioritizes public health and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Malaria remains a significant public health problem in Papua. Keerom is one of the districts with a high incidence of malaria. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) in comparison to microscopic examination, the gold standard for malaria diagnosis. This descriptive analytic study involved 40 suspected malaria patients at Arso III Health Center, Skanto District, Keerom Regency, Papua. Blood samples were examined using thick blood smears, thin blood smears, and the Care Start RDT. The study employed a cross-sectional design with purposive sampling. Microscopic examination identified five positive cases, corresponding to 12.5 percent, while the RDT detected nine positive cases, representing 22.5 percent of the total. The diagnostic analysis of the RDT revealed a sensitivity of 100 percent, a specificity of 88.6 percent, a positive predictive value of 55.6 percent, and a negative predictive value of 100 percent. The McNemar test showed a significant difference, p = 0.046. RDT proved reliable for excluding malaria, as no false-negative results were found. However, positive results require confirmation by microscopy or PCR to avoid misidentification and treatment errors.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and hyperuricemia pose a significant public health threat in Papua, with diabetes prevalence in Jayapura reaching 13.5% and elevated cholesterol levels at 33.9%. The lack of early detection data and limited access to healthcare services highlight the urgent need for preventive screening and health education. This activity aimed to identify metabolic risk factors blood glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid levels among the Papua Healthy Heart Foundation members. The implementation method included preparing calibrated equipment and conducting screening activities on November 9, 2024. Screening results were analyzed based on sex and age group. Findings revealed that 20.9% of female and 50% of male participants had abnormal glucose levels, while 40.9% of women and 50% of men presented with elevated cholesterol. The prevalence of hyperuricemia was lower among men (16.7%) than among women (41.7%). Interestingly, individuals aged over 60 demonstrated better metabolic control than younger age groups. The study concludes that adults aged 40–60 represent the highest-risk population. Therefore, targeted nutritional education and regular health monitoring are essential to reduce the burden of NCDs. These findings provide a foundational basis for designing locally tailored intervention programs.

Abstract

Malaria remains a major public health concern in Jayapura, Indonesia. Limited microscopy availability in primary healthcare facilities has increased reliance on rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for early case detection. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of two malaria RDTs, AllCheck® and Orient Gene®, using microscopy as the reference standard. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a primary healthcare center in Jayapura in December 2025, involving 49 patients with clinical symptoms suggestive of malaria. Capillary blood samples were collected for RDT testing and preparation of thick and thin blood smears. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed by calculating sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV), as well as agreement analysis using Cohen’s Kappa and McNemar test. Both RDTs demonstrated comparable diagnostic performance, with sensitivities of 93.75% (95% CI: 69.77–99.84) and specificities of 100% (95% CI: 89.42–100.00). The PPV was 100% (95% CI: 78.20–100.00), and the NPV was 97.06% (95% CI: 84.67–99.93). Agreement analysis showed almost perfect concordance between each RDT and microscopy (? = 0.953; p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed between AllCheck® and Orient Gene® results based on the McNemar test (p = 1.000). No significant association was found between diagnostic outcomes and patient sex or age group (p > 0.05). The RDTs showed good performance in detecting Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, but reduced sensitivity for Plasmodium malariae. In conclusion, AllCheck® and Orient Gene® RDTs demonstrate strong diagnostic performance and almost perfect agreement with microscopy, supporting their suitability for malaria screening and initial diagnosis in primary healthcare settings in Jayapura. Nevertheless, microscopy remains essential for confirming non-falciparum infections and ensuring comprehensive case detection.

Abstract

Kombucha merupakan minuman fermentasi yang dibuat dari campuran teh dan gula dengan menggunakan kultur simbiotik bakteri dan ragi (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast/SCOBY). Proses fermentasi menghasilkan berbagai senyawa bioaktif, seperti polifenol, asam organik, vitamin, dan enzim, yang berpotensi memberikan efek biologis, termasuk aktivitas antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas antibakteri teh kombucha roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif eksperimental dengan uji laboratorium menggunakan metode difusi agar Kirby–Bauer. Media yang telah diinokulasi dengan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus diuji menggunakan sampel kombucha roselle dengan tiga kali pengulangan, antibiotik sebagai kontrol positif, dan akuades steril sebagai kontrol negatif, kemudian diinkubasi pada suhu 37°C selama 24 jam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombucha roselle menghasilkan diameter zona hambat rata-rata sebesar 14 mm, yang termasuk dalam kategori daya hambat kuat terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa teh kombucha roselle memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus sehingga berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai antibakteri alami.
