Abstract

Background The development of COVID-19, which continues to increase in Indonesia, impacts the Indonesian people and causes stress due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior studies in several countries have shown that stress affects smokers during the COVID-19 pandemic. It affects smokers in two different ways, either they increase smoking or decrease smoking. This study aimed to determine the effect of Nicotine, smoking history, and changes in smoking habits during the COVID-19 pandemic on stress in smokers. Methods We conducted an online survey among active smokers in one of the villages in the South Lampung district, Indonesia November 2020 (n = 150). The survey includes sex, marital status, age of smoking initiation, duration as a smoker, changes in smoking frequency, questionnaire for nicotine dependence (the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence questionnaire) and The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Data were analyzed with Chi-square<0.05). Results The results showed that the PSS score had a significant association with changes in smoking frequency (p=0.004) and nicotine dependence (p=0.001). Conclusions The study concluded that variations in nicotine dependence and changing smoking habits impacted perceived stress in smokers during the pandemic. There is a significant relationship between age at starting to smoke, number of cigarettes per day, duration of smoking habits, degree of smoking habits, and changes in smoking habits with stress levels in smokers in the COVID-19 pandemic era, and there is no relationship between types of cigarettes consumed, and stress levels in smokers in COVID-19 pandemic era.

Abstract

Background Cigarette smoke is the main source of exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) besides air pollution. When cigarette smoke is inhaled, carbon monoxide is absorbed through the lungs, enters the bloodstream, and then binds to hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), whose levels in the blood can be measured as a marker of cigarette smoke absorption. Both smoking habits and CO levels can affect lung function, after smoking, blood CO levels will increase and lung function will decrease significantly. Methods This study used an analytic observational method with a cross-sectional design with a total sample of 99 respondents. Data collection in September-December 2022 using the Brinkman Index questionnaire, Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) questionnaire, exhaled CO levels, and spirometry examination. Results 47.5% exhaled CO levels on 0-6 ppm or in a green zone, 77.8% of subjects smoked, 57.6% FTND score was 0-2, 51.5% of subjects had restricted lung function, and 79.5% subjects with obstruction. Exhaled CO levels were strongly correlated with the Brinkman index (r=0.654, p=0.000), and moderately significant correlation with the FTND score (r=0.544, p=0.000). There is no correlation between exhaled CO levels and degree of smoking with lung function. Conclusions Exhaled CO levels have a significant correlation with smoking and nicotine dependence but do not correlate with pulmonary function test.

Abstract

Abstract

Cervical cancer can arise from a persistent infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which can be avoided through early detection by pap smear screening. Having adequate knowledge about cervical cancer is crucial for encouraging participation in pap smear tests, which can detect non-cancerous or precancerous changes before they progress. This cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study aimed to assess knowledge levels about cervical cancer and their correlation with pap smear results among women of reproductive age in Jakarta, Bogor, and Bekasi (23–50 years). A total of 133 participants underwent a structured questionnaire for assessing knowledge and a pap smear test for evaluating cervical health. The pap smear results showed that 80% were normal, 6% had atypical cells without malignancy, and 14% showed inflammatory lesions. A Chi-square test revealed a significant association between knowledge levels and pap smear outcomes. These findings provide valuable insights for healthcare stakeholders to develop effective health promotion strategies that increase pap smear coverage and encourage early detection of cervical cancer.

Abstract

The incidence of hypertension increases with age. Alterations in function and structure in peripheral vascular system are thought to be the cause of high prevalence of hypertension in the elderly. Holistic, patient-centered management of hypertension is needed to prevent deaths from heart failure. This community service aimed to find out the level of knowledge about hypertension in residents of Jembatan Lima Sub-district, Tambora District, West Jakarta. Using a questionnaire, the level of knowledge was studied in 48 participants cross-sectionally. Blood pressure measurements were also carried out to describe the incidence of hypertension in that area. There was a low level of knowledge about hypertension among participants and this had an impact on increasing the risk of hypertension. Fifty-two percent of participants had normal blood pressure, whereas 48% participants were diagnosed as hypertension. Based on demographic data of participants obtained during the event, age, sex, education level and type of work were significantly increasing the risk of hypertension. Results from this community service conclude that the lack of knowledge of hypertension especially in the elderly can increase the risk of hypertension. In order to improve the quality of managing hypertension in the elderly in Jembatan Lima Village, Tambora District, West Jakarta, it is recommended that counseling and discussion groups to be held annually, especially among the elderly.
