Abstract

Background: Biofilm plays an important role in the etiology of caries, and can be removed through chemical approach using mouthwash, which has some advantages over the mechanical one. Nowadays, there are a lot of mouthwashes with many active ingredients that have been developed. Aim: To review some mouthwashes’ efficacy in preventing dental caries.Discussion: As recent studies showed that Streptococcus mutans can’t be the sole predictor of caries risk, it is suggested that the mouthwashes are also tested on the other cariogenic bacteria, to better estimate its role in reducing caries risk. It has also been proven that as an adjunctive method, mouthwashes has the ability to decrease oral microbial load and cariogenic plaque, even though the most effective way in controlling caries is still mechanical tooth brushing with fluoride toothpastes. However, long-term clinical studies are still needed to confirm the efficacy of some mouthwashes in caries prevention. Conclusion: Mechanical tooth cleaning using fluoride toothpastes remains the main and most effective way in controlling caries. The use of mouthwash, despite its potential in reducing caries risk, is limited to some people with certain conditions as an alternative method, or as an adjunction to the mechanical tooth cleaning for increasing its efficacy.

Abstract

Oral health has an important influence in physical and mental health. Dental caries, the most common dental and oral disease, is related to dental plaque. Mouthwash can prevent the formation of plaque. Ginger, a plant that is easy to grow and found in Indonesia, can be an active ingredient in mouthwash. Ginger has many benefits in health such as antifungal, antimicrobial, anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. One of the methods to increase knowledge about role of ginger in oral health is to give counseling. This education shows that there is an increase in knowledge based on the results of the pretest and posttest, so that participants are expected to be able to apply the knowledge gained in daily life.

Abstract

Analisis statistik dilakukan dengan uji One-way ANOVA.

Abstract

Nutrition has an important role during the growth and development of children in general, especially in the oral cavity. Children who are malnourished can cause abnormalities in the hard tissue of the teeth and periodontal. Abnormalities in the oral cavity can disrupt masticatory function, which can affect food intake. Parental knowledge is important in choosing food for the family, because it can affect the nutritional status of children and their families. This Community Service (PkM) were attended by 36 participants from the PKK mobilization team, Cideng, Central Jakarta. The materials provided are the effect of balanced nutrition on general health, the effect of nutrition on the tooth supporting tissue, the impact and prevention of poor dental health and good oral health care in power points, videos and posters. The results of the PkM training were evaluated by a pre-post test using a google form. The evaluation results showed an increase in participants' knowledge scores from an average pre-test score of 45.78 to an average post-test score of 82.19. It is hoped that this PkM activity can increase the knowledge of the PKK mobilization team, so that in the future they can provide education to the public regarding the influence of balanced nutrition on general health and the oral cavity as well as how to maintain oral health.

Abstract

The β-TCP material is a material of ceramic that often used in the medical and dental fields as a bone substitute material because it has biocompatible, bioresorbable and osteoconductive properties. Apart from that, this material is also biocompatible with tooth tissue, is non-inflammatory, and can regenerate dentin. Several studies have shown that the properties of β-TCP material can be a candidate for pulp capping material. These studies have also been carried out on experimental animals and showed good results. This article reviews the potential of β-TCP as a candidate pulp capping material in dentistry.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Supra-nano spherical filled composite resin (Omnichroma, Tokuyama, Japan) with sol-gel method has 0.26 μm filler size, while nanohybrid composite resin (ENA HRi, Micerium, Italy) has 0.2-1 μm filler size. Nanofillers enhance resistance from chlorogenic acid contained in Coffea arabica. This study analyzed the surface roughness difference between supra-nano spherical-filled and nanohybrid composite resins after Coffea arabica immersion for 7 and 14 days, with 15 minutes of immersion each day. Methods: This study was an in vitro laboratory experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. Twenty composite resin samples were immersed in artificial saliva and divided into four groups; supra-nano coffee, nanohybrid coffee, supra-nano saliva (control), and nanohybrid saliva (control). After 24 hours, immersion in Coffea arabica was started for supra-nano coffee group and nanohybrid coffee group for 15 minutes daily until days 7 and 14. Control groups were immersed in saliva. Results: One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in the surface roughness between composite resin groups. Post-hoc Tukey showed a significant difference between supra-nano coffee (0.91± 0.29 μm) and nanohybrid saliva (1.43±0.42 μm). The GLM Repeated Measure test showed significant surface roughness changes in supra-nano after 14 days of immersion in Coffea arabica (1.47±0.13 μm), while nanohybrid experienced surface roughness changes in 7 days of immersion in Coffea arabica (1.94±0.55 μm) and increased in 14 days (2.25±0.47 μm). In saliva immersion (control group), nanohybrid experienced an increase in surface roughness after 14 days, while supra-nano did not experience a significant increase in surface roughness. Conclusion: Supra-nano spherical filled composite resin exhibits greater resistance to changes in surface roughness following immersion in Coffea arabica.KEYWORDSCoffea arabica, nanohybrid, composite resin, supra-nano spherical filled, surface roughness

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of ultrasonic tip with and without solvent in removing gutta-perca and bioceramic sealer from the middle and apical third of the root canals. Methods: This is a true experimental study with randomized pretest-posttest control group design. Eighteen freshly extracted straight single-rooted mandibular first premolars were confirmed by CBCT and selected. The teeth were decoronated until a length of 16 ± 0.5mm. The teeth were prepared and obturated using gutta-percha and bioceramic sealer with a hydraulic condensation technique. Pre-instrumentation CBCT imaging of all teeth was carried out to obtain the initial volume of the obturation material. After incubating for 30 days, the treated teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n = 6): ultrasonic and xylene, ultrasonic and orange oil, and ultrasonic only. Post-instrumentation CBCT was carried out and the amount of obturation material removed was calculated using CT Analyser. The two-way ANOVA was used to determine the solvent and location interaction. Results: The results showed that there was no significant difference among the groups based on the treatment and location (p > 0.05). In addition, no significant interaction was found in relation to the cleanliness of the root canal (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in the effectiveness of ultrasonic obturation material cleaning with and without endodontic solvents. Based on the results, the obturation material with the most residue is a sealer.
