Abstract

This study focuses on Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech, the President of Indonesia from 2004 – 2014, who gave a speech about wire-tapping. This research project chooses this speech because, in recent days, wire-tapping, which Australia does, is famous. Moreover, the president at that time, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, was one of the wire-tapped victims. It was hot news for Indonesian at that time. On November 2013, SBY gave a speech about his action regarding this wiretapping. Thus, this paper analyzes the commissive speech act and its function. To explain the text clearly, a pragmatic analysis will be employed. This approach is used because the study intends to see the function of commissive speech acts beyond the text; therefore, some information will be scientifically proved regarding the act and its functions. This analysis is based on (Searle, 1969). The result of the study is expected to reveal the aforementioned intended information.

Abstract

Abstract

Wernicke's aphasia is a speech disorder with speech that is quite fluent but has a meaning that does not make sense. Many utterances are just the contents of the sufferer's thoughts. This analysis focuses on the characteristics of sentence production and speech disorders in individuals with Wernicke's aphasia. Individuals with Wernicke's aphasia suffer from a language disorder that affects their ability to communicate effectively. Their speech is typically fluent but nonsensical, and they may struggle to find the right words or understand what is being said to them. They may also make errors in their speech and be unaware of these mistakes, which can make communication even more challenging. Additionally, their sentence structure, grammar, and syntax can be compromised, leading to structurally deficient sentences. Limited use of functional words, the presence of neologisms, and perseveration contribute to the incoherence of their speech. Understanding these characteristics is crucial for developing targeted interventions to enhance communication for individuals with Wernicke's aphasia. The results of this research found that there are 7 types of sentence patterns, 5 types of sentences based on their function and structure, and 4 characteristics of speech disorders that appear in the utterances expressed by Byron.

Abstract

By examining the patterns of code-switching and code-mixing among Ma'soem University fourth-semester English education students, this study aims to analyze the pattern of code-switching and code-mixing in speaking classes. The study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, capturing instances of these linguistic behaviors through observations, interviews, and documentation. The study groups communicative functions, contextual triggers, and different types of language alternation according to the theories of Grosjean (1982), Myers-Scotton (1993), and Muysken (2000). The results show that code-switching and code-mixing improve comprehension, facilitate cross-cultural learning, and greatly improve students' educational experiences. The most common pattern is insertional code-switching, which enables students to use vocabulary from several languages to more accurately communicate complicated ideas, especially when literal translations are inadequate. On the other hand, tag-switching seems to be the least common and frequently happens accidentally. The complex interplay among language proficiency, communicative requirements, and cultural identity in the context of education is reflected in these patterns. The results of this study imply that code-switching and code-mixing are essential to successful communication, cultural expression, and language acquisition rather than just being linguistic phenomena.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the types of code-mixing and the reason for using the code-mixing in social interaction as a sociolinguistic analysis. It employed a descriptive qualitative method through video observation and script analysis that were transcribed from the selected YouTube video. These data collection techniques aimed to collect more information by observing the participant, and the scope that researcher needed to involve in the research. The data collection procedure for this study has been divided into numerous stages. At first, watched the video. Second, created a script by transcribing the utterances. Additionally, filtered out the statements that engaged in code-mixing. In order to make the data systematic and simpler to analyze, and finally arranged it into tables. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that all three types of code-mixing proposed by Hoffmann (2014) were employed, including: intra sentential code-mixing with the 76,47% percentage, 7,35% percentage of intra lexical code-mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation which accounted for 16,17% of the total. Additionally, this study found four reasons of code-mixing; talking about a particular topic, being emphatic or emotional about something, repetition used for clarification, and expressing group character.
