Abstract

This research was focused only to find metaphor in “A Walk To Remember” novel. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from chapter 1 until chapter 6 of the novel. The finding of the research showed that there were 50 lines of metaphor which were classified into three types of metaphor, namely structural metaphor (36), orientational metaphor (9), and ontological metaphor (5). The most dominant type of metaphor used in the novel was structural metaphor (36). It means that the point of the novel was a description of imaginary art work of the author as if the events in the novel were literally true and really happening. In addition, the novel itself was a metaphor that providing structure and analogy to real world.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the effect of Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy on students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The research was conducted by using experimental research design. The population was the students of grade X consisting of 60 students. The sample was selected by applying cluster random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups namely experimental and control groups. Class X-iis consisting of 30 students was the experimental group taught by using Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy. Class X-mia consisting of 30 students was the control group taught by conventional strategy. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test. The result of the data analysis by applying t-test formula showed that t-obs value was higher than t-table value (t-obs > t-table = 3.747 > 2.660). Based on the finding, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Thus, Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy significantly affected the students’ ability in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This study dealt with language style used by Rocky Gerung in Instagram status. It was aimed to describe the types of language style and to find out the most dominant language style used by Rocky Gerung in Instagram status. This study was conducted by using qualitative research design. The source of data was @rockygerungofficial in Instagram. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis technique by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The result showed that there were 3 concepts of language style used by Rocky Gerung in Instagram, namely intimate style, consultative style, and casual style. In addition, there were 9 sentences (42.86%) for intimate style, 9 sentences (42.86%) for consultative style, and 3 sentences (14.28%) for casual style. The consultative style and intimate style were dominantly used by Rocky Gerung in his Instagram status.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of QAR strategy towards reading comprehension on descriptive text. Experimental design was applied in this research. The population and sample of this research were the eighth grade students of SMP Swasta Dwi Tunggal Tanjung Morawa with total number of students was 60. Class VIII-A was the experimental class and class VIII-B was the control class. Each class consisted of 30 students. The cluster random sampling with lottery technique was applied to decide the sample group. The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice tests consisted of 30 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, Kuder Richardson 21 (KR-21) formula was applied and Biserial Point Correlation formula was used to calculate the validity. The t-test was used for the data analysis and it was obtained that t-observed (8.601) was higher than t-table (2.001) with level of significance 0.05 and df = 58. The hypothesis testing proved that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Thus, it was concluded that the Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension on descriptive text.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to determine how using Kahoot affected students' reading comprehension proficiency in the second grade throughout the academic year 2022–2023 at Mas Proyek Univa. This study used an experimental research design as its methodology. This study was carried out at Mas Proyek Univa during the XIIth grade. There were three XII grade classes. In each class, there were 30 students. Therefore, there were 90 pupils in all. The sample was taken using a cluster random sampling and lottery technique. The experimental group, designated as XII ipa, and the control group, designated as XII ips, were chosen. 60 students were selected as the sample. A multiple-choice test was the tool utilised to obtain the data. The t-test was used to analyse the data. Following data analysis, it was discovered that tobserved exceeded ttable (13.24 2.00) with a degree of freedom of 58 and a significance level of 0.05. It meant that although ho was turned down, ha was accepted. For the academic year 2022–2023 at Mas Proyek Univa Medan, there is a strong impact of the Kahoot application on students' achievement in reading comprehension

Abstract

This article describes the concept of using buzz group in classroom to enhance cooperation among students. Buzz group can be alternative method employed by educators (teachers or lecturers) to maximize small group work classroom activity. Buzz group can be applied by students to solve problems given during learning activities. By using buzz group, it is expected that each students has chance to share information each other in a small group work. Thus, the students can be acknowledged for their individual and group strength when they explore a topic given in a limited time.

Abstract

This study intends to examine the scientific article about the phenomenon of hate speech in pandemic era in Indonesia from forensic linguistics view. By using a meta-analysis technique on Google Schoolar, an official website intended as a collection of scientific articles in Indonesia. A total of 150 articles were accessed from Google Scholar. To assure the review's focus, a selection process for inclusion and exclusion criteria was carried out before it began. There are 20 eligible articles to be reviewed. Findings showed that most of the researchers used social media as the source of data, most of the researchers used the theory of speech act to analyse the data.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate if applying Canva significantly affects students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the tenth grade of SMK Swasta PAB 1 Helvetia which has two parallel classes namely X-Titl 1 and X-Titl 2. Each class consisted of 15 students. So, the total number of population was 30 students. Cluster random sampling with Spin the Wheel Technique was employed in selecting the sample. The class X-Titl 2 was selected as experimental group and the class X-Titl 1 was selected as control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Canva while the control group was taught without applying Canva. The instrument used in this research was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. After the data were calculated, it was found that tobserved was higher than ttable (3.80 >2.00) with the degree of freedom df =58 at the level of significance α =0.05. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was successfully rejected. Thus, applying Canva significantly affects students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This study is concerned with lexical ambiguity in the @epicdadjokes Instagram posts that is perceived stylistically. This research has three objectives: (1) to identify the forms of lexical ambiguity, (2) to interpret the meaning of lexical ambiguity represented through wordplay, and (3) to find out the effects of lexical ambiguity represented through wordplay on the meanings from posts of the account. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. It was concerned with the posts from the @epicdadjokes Instagram Posts. The primary source of the data was the posts. The primary instrument was the researcher who acted as the data collector, data analyst and data interpreter. Then, the secondary instrument was the data sheet. In collecting the data, she selected the data, categorize and classified the data into three data sheets. In analyzing the data, she identified the data into the categorizations, and interpreted each datum based on the theories. The findings of the research show there are homonymy (83.33%) and polysemy (16.67%). Meanwhile, among the three sub-types of homonymy, only two of them occur, absolute homonymy (37.50%) and homophone (45.83%). The absent type is homograph. Then, there are three types of wordplay that occur in the posts i.e. Homonymic pun (25.00%), homophonic pun (29.17%), and the recursive pun (45.83%). Meanwhile, homographic pun, compound pun and visual pun does not occur. Finally, the two effects of lexical ambiguity are humorous (83.4%) and ironic effects (16.6%).

Abstract

This research dealt with the students’ phonemic awareness in mastery English vowels and consonants sounds. The aim was to show activities carried out by the students to pronounce the English vowels and consonants sounds and to read as well as to write the sounds symbol in phonemic transcription. The subject in this research was the second semester students of English Education Study Program of a private university in Medan with total number of 15 students. Descriptive qualitative with observation was designed to implement this research. The subject of this research was observed thoroughly during the learning process. The result showed that the students were aware of phonemic in English sounds. They were able to understand the phonemic concept of English vowels and consonants sounds. They were able to pronounce and differentiate the phonemic transcription of English vowel and consonant sounds.
