Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the representation of motherly love (love a mother as the main character (Devki) to her stepdaughter (Arya) in the film Mom (2017). The author uses descriptive research which is described through the storyline in terms of dialogue and action. The analysis shows that Mother's love is represented in the form of a mother's struggle for her stepdaughter who gets sexual violence and injustice in the law. Devki, a mother wants to avenge all the criminals who have been involved in the abuse of Arya. Arya is not Devki's biological child, but she loves her very much. Devki the mother is willing to play “dirty” and hires a private detective to complete his noble mission, but Devki is not aware of another danger that threatens him. She did various ways to avenge the suffering her daughter experienced from the perpetrators. As a child, we must have often heard stories about her life suffered because of the torture of her stepmother. In this film, we see a woman as a mother with sincere affection. This film proves that not all stepchildren will end up suffering. Devki proves that she is Arya's stepmother, but her love for her daughter is not about blood relations. Although Devki did do wrong, we may have to admit it. A mother's instinct does not know the meaning of her child, adopted child, or stepchild. A person who plays the title of mother sometimes acts out of sanity for the sake of a child, but she proves that a mother will go through all her limitations to give justice and happiness to her child. Devki is willing to risk his life to give a new life to Arya. She tries to return Arya's life and smiles. Devki is an image of the strength of a mother who is full of love from a stepmother towards her stepdaughter.

Abstract

This research describes the type of questions both objective and non-objective tests, benefits, and weaknesses of EFL students’ learning outcomes. This research is a descriptive qualitative. The analysis shows that the written test can be used as a measuring instrument for knowing students’ abilities. The form of the written test consists of objective and non-objective. An objective test consists of multiple potential answers or responses for students to choose one including completion, multiple-choice, matching, short answer, and true-false test. Non-objective tests consist of essays/descriptions for students to compose or organize answers in their language including an essay in limited/restricted essay and free essay tests. Teachers/lecturers should consider aspects of making the tests. They have differences in measured learning outcomes, preparation of question items, sampling of learning materials, control of student answers, scoring, influence on the learning process, and reliability. However, both objective and non-objective tests also have several advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract

This research analyzes and identifies English terms commonly used in live shopping e-commerce platforms and investigates their potential as authentic materials for developing EFL learners’ vocabulary and speaking skills. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design. The study identified and categorized English terms commonly used in live shopping e-commerce platforms, specifically Shopee and TikTok, based on their function in live interactions. Terms were grouped into Promotions & Discounts, Urgency & Time, Products & Quality, Transactions & Payments, Digital Engagement & Interaction, Fun/Trendy/Review, and Other/General Marketing Terms. These expressions are strategically employed by hosts to attract viewers, encourage purchases, and maintain engagement in real time. The findings show that these terms appear in both spoken and written communication, including product descriptions, live announcements, and chat interactions. They provide authentic materials for EFL learners, offering practical language for developing vocabulary and speaking skills across persuasive, transactional, interactive, descriptive, and professional communication contexts in digital commerce. The study also found that live hosts on Shopee and TikTok frequently use English terms in both spoken and written communication during live shopping sessions. These terms, drawn from promotions, product descriptions, transactions, digital engagement, and marketing interactions, serve strategic purposes such as attracting viewers, encouraging purchases, and maintaining engagement. They were categorized into seven functional groups: Promotions & Discounts, Urgency & Time, Products & Quality, Transactions & Payments, Digital Engagement & Interaction, Fun/Trendy/Review, and Other/General Marketing Terms. These English terms provide authentic material for EFL learners, offering exposure to real-world, contextually meaningful language. They support vocabulary expansion, transactional speaking, persuasive and promotional skills, interactive communication, descriptive and evaluative speaking, as well as marketing and strategic discourse. By integrating these terms into classroom activities such as role-plays, simulations, and presentations, learners can develop functional and professional English skills applicable to digital commerce contexts.
