Abstract

This study aims to find out about online shop (online business shop) in Islamic view (Islamic law). This research is qualitative descriptive. This study included literature to examine the written sources such as scientific journals, books referesni, literature, encyclopedias, scientific articles, scientific papers and other sources that are relevant and related to the object being studied. As for the object of study of this research is in the form of texts or writings that describe and explain about the business / online shop (online shopping), which become popular in Indonesia. Results from this study is Islam do business through online is allowed in accordance with Islamic Shari'a. While there are elements of usury, injustice, menopoli and fraud. Prophet hinted that buying and selling is lawful while consensual (Antaradhin), for sale or through an online business as having a positive impact because it is practical, fast, and easy for the buyer. If the business by via online not in accordance with the terms and conditions described above, online business is not allowed.

Abstract

AbstractThe aims of this study are to know the types of figurative languages and to know the most dominant figurative language used in lyrics One Direction’s album song entitled Up All Night. The research is qualitative descriptive to describe the analysis factually, accurately and systematically. The data in this research include the phrases or the sentences which found in lyric album song entitled “Up All Night” by One Direction. The data source of this study is album song entitled “Up All Night” by One Direction. Based on research finding, it can be found that there are some figurative languages in One Direction’s album “Up All Night”. There were 13 songs in this album, they are: 1) Everything About You, 2) Gotta Be You, 3) I Want, 4) I Wish, 5) More Than This, 6) One Thing, 7) Same Mistakes, 8) Save You Tonight, 9) Stole My Heart, 10) Taken, 11) Tell Me a Lie, 12) Up All Night and 13) What Makes You Beautiful. Based on the result of this research, it is found six types of figurative language in One Direction’s album entitled “Up All Night”, that are repetition, parallelism, personification, metaphor, simile and hyperbole. While, the most dominant type of figurative language used is repetition, there are 50 lyrics that contain repetition both anaphora and epiphora.Key Words: figurative language, song, album.

Abstract

 The objectives of the study are to identify the types of translation techniques and to find out the most dominant type of the translation techniques used in the translation of journal abstracts Edunomika STIE AAS Surakarta in Vol 2, No 01 (2018). The study used a descriptive qualitative design. Descriptive qualitative is a method of research that makes the description of the situation or events or occurrences clearer. It provides the description of situation or events or occurrences, so this method is an intention to accumulate the basic data. The data were taken from sixteen translation of journal abstracts Edunomika STIE AAS Surakarta in Vol 2, No 01 (2018). The finding shows that there were five translation techniques used in journal abstracts, they are Transposition/Shift (126 data or 75,90%), Reduction/Omission (21 data or 12,65%), Amplification/Addition (8 or 4,82%), Established Equivalence (6 or 3,61%) and Borrowing (5 data or 3,01%). The most dominant type of translation technique is Transposition/Shift. This technique replaces the grammatical categories of the source language (SL) into the target language (TL). This technique is usually used because of a different grammar between SL and TL. Transposition is the process where parts of the speech change their sequence when they are translated.

Abstract

The presence of ‘Grammarly’ as one of the online grammar checkers as the impact of technology development.  This paper aims to reveal an overview of ‘Grammarly’ as an AI-powered English Writing Assistant for EFL students in Writing English. This research applies descriptive qualitative research. Based on the analysis, using Grammarly software shows the performance increased. Before using Grammarly, the performance of the test score is 34 out of 100. After using Grammarly, the performance text score is 77 out of 100. This score shows the quality of writing in this text increased. The performance can be increased based on Grammarly's suggestions in a Premium account. The researcher recommends the students to use Grammarly. Grammarly is a web tool to perform grammar checks well, starting from the spelling of words, sentence structure to standard grammar. Grammarly is free, so it is recommended for students who want to check various documents or articles in English. Grammarly helps check the grammatical rule, the spelling rule in English structure, also correct errors in writing such as punctuation and capitalization. Grammarly runs on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system, which is built to analyze English sentences relying on a set of rules. Grammarly takes context when showing corrections or suggestions, and inform the students quickly but still precisely. For accuracy, two service options available both free and paid features. Of course, the Grammarly free version still has limitations and in-service features, unlike the paid version (premium) which has full advantages and benefits, many features, and complete.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the type of code-mixing and the most dominant type of code-mixing used by Rosalina Musa in Instagram’s caption. This research is descriptive qualitative as the method of the research. From the result of the analysis shows an outer code mixing found in Rosalina Musa’s Instagram captions. It blends or mixes a native language with a foreign language. From the definitions stated, there are some types of code-mixing found in Rosalina Musa’s Instagram captions, they are the example is the English language is mixed with the Indonesian language. The forms of code-mixing usually appear in word, phrase, clause, hybrid, and repetition/reduplication. In a word, there are 152 data or 53.33 %. In a phrase, there are 113 data or 39.65 %. In the clause, there are 12 data or 4.21 %. In a hybrid, there are 6 data or 2.11 %. While in repetition/reduplication there are 2 data or 0.70 %. It also shows that the most dominant type of code-mixing found in Rosalina Musa’s Instagram captions appears in the word. The insertion of words here means the language unit that stands on its own, it consists of free morpheme sand bound morphemes. The words include some part of speech or word class, for example, noun, adjective, verb, conjunction, and adverb.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the students’ ability and their opinions in doing the Structure and Written Expression (SWE) of the TOEFL Prediction test. The result suggests that, on the mean score, 136 non-regular students show a higher average score of 30.68 than 118 regular students’ score of 30.01; on the median score, both regular and non-regular students have the same median score of 36 out of 40 points; while  on the range score, regular students have a minimum score of 4 to 40 correct answers, while non-regular students have a minimum score of 5 to 39 correct answers. Related to their opinions about the test, the students agree that SWE is the most difficult test, thus arguing that studying grammar is essential. Therefore, careful preparation is needed to achieve a maximum score on the test such as having sufficient knowledge of English grammar.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the type and its examples of deixis found in the subtitle movie of “First Kiss”. This research method of this method is qualitative methodology. In data collection, the research use document analysis in this research. The result of this research shows that three types of deixis found in the subtitle movie of “First Kiss” movie such as a person, time, and place deixis. In-person deixis, the deictic expressions are the personal pronoun “I” as a singular subject pronoun, ‘Me” as singular object pronoun, “My” as a possessive adjective, “We” as a plural subject pronoun, “Us” as object pronoun, “Our” as a possessive adjective. In the second person, they are “You” as a subject and object pronoun, and “Your” as an object pronoun. The third person “He” as a subject pronoun, “Him” as object pronoun, and “His” as a possessive adjective, ‘She” as a subject pronoun, “Her” as object pronoun and as possessive adjective, “It” as subject and object pronoun. In space/spatial/place deixis, the deictic expressions are “here” and “there”. While in the temporal/time deixis, the deictic expressions are “now” and “tomorrow”.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of errors and the most dominant type of errors in the International Journal of Economics, Business, and Accounting Research (IJEBAR) STIE AAS Surakarta, published in 2018. This study employed a qualitative method. The author used documents to collect data and analyzed the data by identifying errors, classifying errors, explanation errors, and tabulating errors. The research findings showed that the type of errors in IJEBAR was related to some aspects of writing, such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling. In the grammar aspect, there were 36 data or 50.70 %, which consist of some errors in class words (part of speech), for example in determiner/article (22 data or 61.11 %), verb (11 data or 30.56 %), preposition (2 data or 5.56 %), and noun (1 data or 2.78 %). There were 21 data or 29.58 % in the punctuation aspect, and in the spelling aspect, there are 14 data or 19.72 %. The most dominant type of errors found in IJEBAR is the aspect of grammar, as 36 data or 50.70%. Errors can be caused by a lack of language skills such as the learner's lack of knowledge of the target language's correct rules or an error in translating using specific translation tools. Therefore, in writing English abstract well and correctly, it should follow the language (English) rule, which refers to the correct grammatical, punctuation, and spelling aspect.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of any platforms in English language teaching and learning, especially in listening skills. This research design is qualitative. From the result, it shows that some technologies available both online or offline include applications or platforms that provide many choices for listening to English, they are. 1) Music platform. These platforms can be found in PlayStore, such as Joox and Spotify recommends songs for listening skills. 2) Youtube channel. Many YouTube channels for learning English listening skills include 1) Voice of America (VOA), BBC Learning English, Learn English with TV Series, English with Lucy, and Oxford Online English. 3) Podcasts. Both BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and VoA (Voice of America). These Podcasts offer listening skills. The other podcasts are “The English We Speak, Podcast in English, Better at English, Luke’s English Podcast, Espresso English Podcast, Anchor FM” etc. 4) Websites that are pretty representative in practicing the listening skills such as Sound English, ESL-Lab, English listening, Ello, learn English British Council, Daily ESL, Story Nory, Story Line, which can be accessed. Learning English through several applications above can be an alternative for students in practicing and improving their English listening skills. Listening exercises can be carried out by using interesting listening strategies when learning English. It depends on the teachers/lecturers who teach listening subjects and the students who learn English materials.

Abstract

MALL in translation is increasingly prevalent among Indonesian EFL students due to ICT development and practical usage in teaching and learning. In addressing this issue, this research assessed the students' success and understanding by using MALL to translate a coronavirus text. There are four issues to consider: 1) Is MALL helpful in improving students' translation abilities? 2) How do students see MALL translate a text from English to Indonesian? 3) How does MALL help them cope with language competency when translating a text from English to Indonesian? 4) What challenges do students have while translating a text from English to Indonesian using MALL? This research was performed using qualitative and quantitative methods (Mix Methods). The research possessed 85 undergraduate students from East Jakarta and South Sulawesi as the respondents. Data was amassed through an online survey, a semi-structured interview, and document analysis. After attending the MALL online learning session, a paired-sample t-test indicated a significantly different score across the students. According to the survey, interview, and document analysis findings, they had a positive attitude about MALL for translation. They had acquired powerful support in terms of word order, word choice, and sentence structure. Nonetheless, most of them agreed that the technical issue and the lack of assistance were the most significant obstacles to successfully operating the MALL for translation.
