Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the English Camp program on enhancing English-speaking proficiency at SMA Negeri 11 Luwu, Indonesia. Conducted over two days, the program focused on interactive learning through communicative tasks such as group discussions, role-playing, and language games. A total of 44 students participated, and their speaking abilities were assessed using pretest and posttest evaluations. The results showed significant improvement in fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and confidence. Group 1 and Group 5 exhibited the highest increases in scores, with fluency and confidence showing the greatest gains. The study found that the program was especially effective for lower-proficiency learners, while higher-level learners showed minimal progress due to the ceiling effect. Qualitative data from teacher and student interviews indicated that the camp created a positive and engaging learning environment that encouraged students to use English naturally and confidently. The findings support the efficacy of short-term, immersive programs in improving EFL learners’ speaking skills and highlight the importance of experiential and collaborative learning in language acquisition.

Abstract

Thesis writing is a major challenge for undergraduate students, often leading to delays in graduation. This study examines the impact of a Thesis Writing Boot Camp on students’ abilities and identifies the challenges faced by 33 students from the English Language Education Study Program at IAIN Palopo. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data were collected via questionnaires from 23 respondents. Findings revealed that strongly positive outcomes: a high majority of participants reported satisfaction (73.9% satisfied/very satisfied), found materials relevant (82.6% relevant/highly relevant), and rated facilitators highly (91.3% good/excellent). The program also led to significant self-reported improvements in understanding thesis structure (73.9% improved/significantly improved) and increased writing confidence (65.2% confident/very confident). Mentoring sessions were deemed highly beneficial (82.6% beneficial/highly beneficial), and the program received a strong endorsement (60.9% highly likely to recommend). However, challenges persisted, including insufficient time allocation for some sessions (as noted by 8.7% of respondents), only moderate gains in confidence and understanding among a substantial subgroup (34.8%), and an uncomfortable learning environment for a minority (8.7%). The study concludes that structured, intensive Boot Camp is highly effective, and recommendations are provided for program enhancement, including extending session duration and improving the learning environment to optimize outcomes.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the strategic role of the Islamic kingdoms of the early 13th–17th centuries in shaping the foundations of the economy, power, and civilization of the Indonesian archipelago, which has not been fully studied through a historical education approach. This research aims to analyze the relationship between the foundations of Islamic economics and the dynamics of the ebb and flow of power of the Samudera Pasai, Malacca, and Aceh Darussalam Kingdoms and their relevance for the development of history learning. The method used is qualitative research with a descriptive-analytical character through a historical approach and history education, using secondary data sourced from historical chronicles, legal manuscripts, traveler's notes, as well as scientific literature and reputable journals. The research findings show that an Islamic economy based on international trade, port governance, currency, the Baitul Mal (the Islamic treasury), and religious legitimacy formed the primary basis for the formation and strengthening of the power of these three kingdoms. Samudera Pasai emerged as a pioneer of Islamic economics and education, Malacca as the center of maritime hegemony and Islamic law, while Aceh Darussalam developed as a political, economic, and intellectual power oriented toward colonial resistance. The research findings confirm that the decline of these kingdoms was influenced by internal conflict and global geopolitical pressures. The implications of this research enrich the historiography of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago while providing a practical contribution to history education through the development of contextual, critical teaching materials that are rich in economic values, power, and Islamic-national identity.

Abstract

Abstract

In the digital era, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Duolingo have increasingly been used to support language acquisition. However, students' experiences and attitudes toward these tools remain underexplored in the local academic context. This research aimed to identify both the perceived advantages and disadvantages of AI in English learning. A qualitative narrative method was employed, involving 16 sixth-semester English students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using open-ended questionnaires distributed via Google Forms. The findings reveal that students generally perceive AI positively, noting its role in enhancing accessibility, personalized learning, and improvement in key language skills—speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Nevertheless, concerns were raised about over-reliance on technology, reduced classroom interaction, and limited accuracy in context-sensitive tasks. Internet connectivity issues and access restrictions on premium features were also highlighted. The study concludes that while AI offers valuable support in EFL learning, it should be integrated thoughtfully alongside human interaction and traditional pedagogies. These insights can inform educators, institutions, and future researchers in designing balanced, student-centered approaches to AI-assisted language education
