Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) to the contextual and integrative development of Islamic law in Indonesia, with a particular focus on two major institutions: Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng in Jombang and Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor in Ponorogo. These pesantren were selected due to their unique characteristics and historical significance in shaping Islamic legal thought in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, the research finds that Tebuireng contributes significantly through its emphasis on progressive and contextual Islamic intellectual traditions, while Gontor excels in producing adaptable Muslim leaders capable of responding to social and legal changes. The findings reveal that the integration of Tebuireng’s intellectual approach and Gontor’s modern, character-based educational system offers a strong model for reconstructing Islamic law in ways that are responsive to contemporary Indonesian society. In conclusion, pesantren have substantial potential to serve as centers for Islamic legal development that are not only normative but also practical, contributing significantly to harmonizing sharia values with the national legal system.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of social and cultural innovation in community empowerment as a strategy to realize inclusive development in Ponorogo Regency, East Java. Social innovation includes creative solutions designed to address social challenges through a collaborative community-based approach, while cultural innovation focuses on preserving, revitalizing, and developing local values as social and economic capital. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, involving in-depth interviews with stakeholders, participant observation, and analysis of local policy documents. The results of the study show that various cultural-based innovation programs, such as the revitalization of Reog art and the development of cooperatives based on traditional values, contribute significantly to improving community welfare and strengthening social cohesion. Social innovation implemented through informal education and community-based creative economy programs has succeeded in creating jobs, increasing individual capacity, and reducing social inequality. However, the main challenges in implementing this innovation include limited resources, cultural resistance to change, and minimal infrastructure support. With the right strategy, social and cultural innovation can be a catalyst for inclusive development that involves all levels of society, creates active participation, and encourages local independence. The main recommendations of this study include strengthening synergies between government, community, and private sector, as well as developing policies that support the sustainability of innovation based on local wisdom. This study is expected to be a reference for the development of similar empowerment models in other regions, especially those with strong cultural and social potential.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate an integrative innovation model to bridge the weak integration of local wisdom curriculum in Islamic boarding school education. This study used a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. This research was conducted in five Islamic boarding schools: Walisongo Islamic boarding school in Lampung, Al-Kayyis Islamic boarding school in Banten, Al-Mahalli Islamic boarding school in Yogyakarta, Al-Hasan Islamic boarding school in Ponorogo, and Darul Hikam Bendo Islamic boarding school in Kediri. The forms of local wisdom in Islamic boarding schools include gotong royong, piil pesegiri, agrarian culture, social ethics, and digital creativity. Data analysis employed the Folk Development Analysis (FDA), which involved identifying elements of local wisdom, internalization processes, and interpretations. The results of the study show that those five Islamic boarding schools have succeeded in integrating local wisdom values through three main pillars: (1) strengthening local values through the Islamic boarding school curriculum, (2) a socially based contextual approach in the culture of students, and (3) methodological innovations that are in accordance with developments in the digital era. The form of implication of the integration of these values is the formation of a strong, relevant, and adaptive character of students in preserving local wisdom.
