Abstract

Outdoor learning, as a form of science pedagogical knowledge, plays a vital role in equipping elementary learners with 21st-century competencies. This qualitative case study explores how outdoor learning at SD Alam Ungaran, a nature-based Islamic elementary school in Indonesia, can foster the development of critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration (4C) skills grounded in a STEAM-integrated thematic curriculum. This study collected data through document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and direct classroom observations. Data was analyzed by emphasizing coding, condensation, and thematic interpretation via NVivo 12 Pro. Findings revealed that outdoor learning significantly enhances 4C skills through experiential and project-based activities embedded in real-world environmental contexts. Students’ critical thinking skill is nurtured through inquiry and direct observation, while the creativity is stimulated through innovative ecological projects. Students developed their communication skills via interactive group discussions and presentations, and reinforced their collaboration skills through cooperative tasks such as market day and eco-projects. Moreover, students enriched their pedagogical science knowledge through the integration of STEAM concepts in authentic field activities. The SD Alam Ungaran integrated STEAM concepts and environmental ethics uniquely further to support the development of students’ holistic moral, emotional, and social skills. Abstract

Scientific literacy is an essential competency for students; however, science learning in primary schools is often dominated by teacher-centered methods that limit student engagement and conceptual understanding. This study aims to describe the implementation of an inquiry-based approach in strengthening Disciplinary Core Ideas, mapping Science and Engineering Practices skills, and analyzing the relationship between scientific concepts and Crosscutting Concepts at School of Life Lebah Putih. This research employed a qualitative case study design involving semi-structured interviews with the principal, teachers, and students. The findings indicate that the inquiry-based approach enhances students’ active participation, conceptual understanding, and the relevance of science learning to everyday life, although its implementation is constrained by teachers’ reliance on lecture-based instruction. It can be concluded that inquiry-based learning has strong potential to improve scientific literacy in primary education; therefore, the development of locally contextualized learning modules is recommended to support more effective and sustainable implementation aligned with NGSS standards. Keywords: Science Literacy; Inquiry Approach; Basic Education

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has shifted educational priorities toward the development of higher-order thinking skills, including computational thinking. However, the integration of computational thinking into elementary science learning remains limited. This study aims to examine the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on students’ computational thinking skills in science education. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design was employed. The participants consisted of 40 fifth-grade students divided into an experimental group (n = 20) and a control group (n = 20), selected using a saturated sampling technique. The instrument was a descriptive test developed based on four computational thinking components: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithms. Data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests followed by simple linear regression. The findings indicate that PBL has a statistically significant effect on students’ computational thinking skills (p < 0.05), with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.919. These results suggest that PBL is an effective instructional approach for fostering computational thinking skills in elementary science learning.
