Abstract

Tilapia contains protein and has a high nutritional content, including minerals, vitamins and unsaturated fats. However, this fish is easily damaged and rotten. This is caused by the activity of enzymes, microorganisms, or oxygen oxidation. Therefore, it is necessary to use preservatives so that the fish does not spoil or rot quickly. One of the potential natural preservatives is the kecombrang plant, especially the stems and rhizomes which contain bioactive substances. This plant has antibacterial properties that can help slow down the decline in fish quality. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of kecombrang stem and rhizome extract as a natural preservative in tilapia meat. The effectiveness of kecombrang stem and rhizome extracts was determined by soaking tilapia meat in kecombrang stem and rhizome extracts at various times of 0, 3, and 6 hours. The protein content of tilapia meat was measured by the biuret test. The results of this study indicated that the percentage of protein degradation inhibitors in kecombrang stem extract was 30.1% for 3 hours and 17.8% for 6 hours while in kecombrang rhizome extract was 34.2% for 3 hours and 22.6% for 6 hours. This shows that kecombrang rhizome extract is more effective as a natural preservative for tilapia meat compared to kecombrang stem extract. Abstract

Fermentation of agricultural by-products represents a strategic and sustainable approach to providing fibrous feed for beef cattle, particularly in regions facing high feed costs and the low nutritional value of unprocessed residues. Through microbial activity, fermentation alters the chemical composition of raw materials by degrading crude fiber components such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, thereby enhancing nutrient availability, crude protein content, digestibility, and palatability. Consequently, fermented by-products improve rumen fermentation efficiency and overall cattle performance while reducing feed costs and mitigating environmental pollution from agricultural waste. The wide availability of agricultural residues ensures a consistent raw material supply, supporting feed sustainability within a circular economy framework. This review highlights the mechanisms and benefits of fermentation technology, its role in improving resource efficiency and farm profitability, and its potential contribution to sustainable livestock systems and national food security.

Abstract

Goat farming is still carried out traditionally at Berkah Mandiri Farm (BMF) in Pesawaran Regency. Low livestock production is not only caused by the lack of knowledge of farmers regarding livestock maintenance but also due to the very scarce availability of superior forage. Optimization of agricultural waste as animal feed is expected to answer the urgency of providing scarce natural fiber sources, especially in Pejambon Village, Pesawaran Regency. In addition, the addition of prebiotic sources from Andaliman spices is expected to affect bioprocesses in the rumen and have an impact on reducing methane gas. This community service aims to provide alternative feed solutions for ruminant livestock to improve livestock businesses at Berkah Mandiri Farm, increasing the availability of sustainable feed through patent application tests of Complete Feed Formula supplemented with Andaliman Fruit Flour in alternative feed products, namely WABITAK (Livestock Biscuit Wafers). The results of the community service showed that responses agreed with the importance of innovation by 47%, the importance of technology by 52%, the need for alternative feed by 48% and control of wabitak production by 46%. It can be concluded that the breeders showed high enthusiasm and had the potential to conduct in-depth research studies, especially on the aspect of increasing productivity.

Abstract

Based on reports from Ngemplak 1 Public Health Center (Puskesmas Ngemplak 1) in Sleman in 2023, the number of stunted children under five has not shown a significant decrease, although the prevalence has fallen below 14%. The prevalence of stunting was 12% in 2022 and decreased by only 0.2% in 2023. This figure is still below the Sleman District target, which requires a reduction to 7%. One of the groups at risk for stunting is pregnant women. The knowledge of pregnant women regarding food processing to improve the nutritional value of food products is crucial, as it is expected to positively influence their behavior in providing nutritious meals. Composite flour is a mixture of wheat flour and other types of flour aimed at enhancing the nutritional and sensory qualities of food products. Many pregnant women are still unfamiliar with how to process wheat-based products by incorporating composite flour to increase nutritional value. Therefore, this educational activity was conducted to improve pregnant women’s knowledge related to food processing using composite flour to enhance the nutritional content of wheat-based foods such as cookies, bread, and flakes. The health education session was delivered using lectures supported by PowerPoint media, videos, and leaflets. The results of the community service activity showed an increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores, indicating an improvement in knowledge about composite flour for enhancing the nutritional quality of food products for pregnant women.

Abstract

Feed availability and quality are critical factors affecting the productivity of small ruminant livestock. In smallholder farming systems, feed management remains a major constraint due to limited availability of quality forage, seasonal fluctuations in feed supply, and low adoption of feed processing technologies. Similar challenges were identified in the Berkah Mandiri Farm farmer group in Pejambon Village, Negeri Katon District, Pesawaran Regency, where traditional goat husbandry and simple feed management practices are still commonly applied. This community service program aimed to enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills through the introduction and application of Urea Molasses Block (UMB) as a feed supplement for local goats. The activities were conducted through extension sessions, hands-on training on UMB production, and evaluation using questionnaires. The results showed that farmers were able to independently produce UMB and understand its benefits as a supplementary source of nutrients. Overall, participants’ level of understanding regarding feed technology and UMB reached 75%, categorized as “good understanding”. The application of UMB technology is expected to improve feed management, enhance the productivity of local goats, and support the sustainable development of smallholder goat farming.
