Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health threat due to many other health risks such as kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and even serious injuries that can cause complications. One of the complications is peripheral neuropathy nerve damage that causes diabetic ulcers so that there is a risk of decreased foot sensitivity and changes in ankle brachial index values in diabetics. Progressive muscle relaxation technique is one of the actions that can affect the hypothalamus to regulate and reduce the activity of the sympathetic nervous system to provide direction by moving the feet slowly and regularly. Objective: to determine the effect of progressive relaxation techniques on the value of ankle brachial index and foot sensitivity in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This study used quasi experiment method with pre test and post test design approach with control group. The population of DM patients was 120 respondents, then the sample was taken using non-probability sampling and based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sampling using total sampling with the number of respondents 15 intervention groups and 15 control groups. Analysis using the t-test. Results: The results of the study on the ABI value obtained a p-value of 0.02 in the intervention group and a p-value of 0.414 in the control group while the foot sensitivity value obtained a p-value of 0.01 in the intervention group and 0.07 in the control group. Conclusion: This shows that there is an increase in ABI values and foot sensitivity in patients with diabetes mellitus. The progressive relaxation technique can be used as an intervention to prevent diabetic foot ulcers.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is caused by metabolic disorders characterized by increased blood glucose levels due to insulin secretion. Complications of peripheral arterial DM cause decreased blood flow to the lower extremities, marked by a decrease in ABI. Non-pharmacological therapy requires diabetes exercises and NMT to prevent injury to the feet due to changes in peripheral blood circulation. Objective: research to determine the effect of diabetic foot exercises and NMT on ABI in Type 2 DM patients. Method: Quantitative design, quasi-experimental method, pre-test post-test control group design, sampling technique using purposive sampling. Observations assessed the ABI score before the diabetes exercise intervention in intervention 1 and intervention 2 NMT, and group 3 control. Results: Data analysis using paired tests on ABI in 3 groups showed that in group I the foot exercise intervention resulted in p. 0.001 means there is a change in results before and after the intervention. Likewise, in group II of the NMT intervention, the result was p 0.001, there was a change in results before and after the intervention. Conclusion: Research proves that diabetes foot exercise and NMT interventions can improve ABI values in Type 2 DM patients.

Abstract

Nursing students often face significant stress and anxiety, impacting their cognitive function, academic performance, and clinical skills. Effective interventions to support their mental health are needed. This study investigates the effect of an eight-week mindfulness meditation course on stress and anxiety levels of nursing students during clinical placements. Conducted from February to May 2024 at nursing schools in Surakarta, Indonesia, the quasi-experimental study included 35 students who attended weekly 50-minute mindfulness sessions. The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (Zung-SARS), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), and four weeks post-intervention (T2). Results showed significant improvements in mindfulness, with FFMQ scores increasing by 11.43 from T0 to T1 (p < 0.001) and by 10.86 from T0 to T2 (p < 0.001). Anxiety and depression levels significantly decreased, with Zung-SARS scores dropping by -6.89 from T0 to T1 (p < 0.001) and -7.08 from T0 to T2 (p < 0.001), and BDI scores decreasing by -5.89 from T0 to T1 (p < 0.001) and -5.86 from T0 to T2 (p < 0.001). The study suggests mindfulness meditation can significantly enhance mental health among nursing students.
