Abstract

Marital adjustment between couples with different and stigmatized religious backgrounds has rarely been studied. This study aims to explain the dynamics of marital adjustment for Ahmadiyya members who are of Ahmadi descent and married to individuals of non-Ahmadi descent using a multiple case study approach. This study conducted in-depth interviews with four couples from Indonesian Ahmadiyya Muslim Congregation, consisting of two husband and wife couples with husbands of Ahmadi descent, and two husband and wife couples of Ahmadi descent. Data were analyzed with a cross-case synthesis. Personality factors (socialization and achievement) that are followed by adaptation have shaped the marital adjustments of the four husbands and wives of Ahmadi descent in this study. Personality strengthens relational commitments which play an important role in marital adjustment. In active Ahmadi couples, personality factors strengthen the religious commitment of the spouses, but they also compromise their partner's shortcomings in religious matters. Personality factors also encourage them to continue to show tolerance and generosity towards extended families who have shown a stigmatizing attitude towards them as Ahmadis. This study implies the importance of considering personality factors that predict partner adjustment and not only religiosity or religious background in marriages among religious groups.

Abstract

Abstract

Implementing sexual communication between parents-adolescent is essential to protect adolescents’ sexual health. This research seeks to determine how parents-adolescents’ sexual communication was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research utilised a descriptive quantitative research method. One hundred sixty-seven parents participated in this study and were recruited through links that WhatsApp and Facebook shared. The parents must have adolescents between 11-19 years old and unmarried. The result revealed that the communication between parents and adolescents was more intense during the pandemic. Moreover, 16% of the time dedicated to it was increased. However, only a small number of parents (11.4%) recorded conducting sexual communication with their teenagers. 88% of respondents reported that the duration their teens spent online had increased, even though 55.6% of them implemented a limit on their internet time. The t-test independent sample result revealed communication differences assessed from gender (0.019) and age (0.025). However, there were no differences in education (0.081) and residential area (0.663). The expectation of this study’s outcome could be expected as a reference for the related government institutions and private organisations to enact an intervention program for parents about the importance of sexual communication for adolescents’ physical and mental health.

Abstract

Indonesia’s demographic bonus for the millennial generation is starting to increase. However, the quality of nutrition and health of Indonesian children is threatened by cases of stunting in several regions in Indonesia without specialized assistance from posyandu cadres as the frontline educators for parents. This community service research aimed to explore posyandu cadres' understanding of the value of positive parenting to prevent stunting through a Psychoeducation Program design. This activity program involved psychoeducational interventions using lectures, discussion, and role-play of positive parenting practices. The Positive Parenting Psychoeducation Activities were carried out involving 39 Posyandu Cadres in Ringu Rara Village, Lamboya Sub-District, West Sumba District, East Nusa Tenggara Province (N = 20) and Posyandu Cadres in Tirtoadi Village, Mlati Sub-District, Sleman District, Special Region of Yogyakarta Province (N = 19). A psychoeducation program evaluation using the open-ended questionnaire was administered before (pre-test) and after (post-test) lecture sessions, discussion sessions, and Positive Parenting training sessions. Subsequently, the trainers continued with Focused Group Discussion sessions for the follow-up stage of the training. Using a qualitative approach to thematic analysis techniques and cross-tabulations, the authors searched for themes that emerged from the questionnaire responses data and recorded focus group discussion transcripts. Besides, the data organization was also carried out with the help of the MAXQDA 2020 Application. The thematic analysis results generated three main themes around Positive Parenting Psychoeducation activities, namely Posyandu Cadres with their tasks and challenges, Positive Parenting to prevent stunting, and Positive Parenting Psychoeducation follow-up plans. The conclusion drawn from the results of this activity was that the family-household factor of parenting patterns can influence stunting. Posyandu cadres need positive parenting psychoeducation to be able to share information with, assist, monitor, and help parents of children with stunting indications.

Abstract

Human flourishing entails a state of complete, intrinsic self-fulfillment; however, the concept also embraces interpersonal interaction through social connection. This research aims to explore the concept and dynamics of flourishing Muslim families. The data collection involved 45 to 120 minutes of in-depth interviews with five participant families. A qualitative approach was taken, with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and MAXQDA 2020 techniques used to organize the data. We utilized the Ephocé and member-checking and adopted workflow protocol management tools (i.e., MAXQDA 2020) to ensure data credibility. Four superordinate themes emerged, namely compassionate love in collaboration; the adaptation process; relatedness to the larger circle beyond nuclear family members; and the role of religious and local wisdom teachings. All the themes were related to establishing the nature of a flourishing family. It is concluded that the meaning of “flourishing family” for the Indonesian Muslim Families participants emphasized shared relational well-being, which is more complex than the simple “human flourishing” concept. The findings contribute to developing the concept of a flourishing family through evidence based on empirical data regarding efforts to maintain positive potential in the family.
