Abstract

Abstract

Katuk (Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr.) leaves have benefits for the human body to protect cell structure and work up vitamin C activity. Cream is a semi-solid preparation which contain one or more dissolved medicinal ingredients in a suitable base material and containing not less than 60% water. Nanocream has an easy, comfortable diffusion on the skin area and increases the absorption of active substances on the skin. This research aims to formulate 3% katuk leaf extract as a skin moisturizer in the form of nanocream preparations with a comparison using blanks (without extract) and Citra brand products. This research was conducted by using an experimental method. The research steps are plant identification, simplicity characterization, screening test, the sample was extracted by maceration for 5 × 24 hours using 80% ethanol solvent then the filtrate was evaporated by a vacuum rotary evaporator at approximately 500C for ±5 hours until a thick extract of katuk leaves was produced. The thick extracts of katuk leaves and blanks (without extract) were formulated in Nanocream preparation by using a high-shear emulsification method (high-shear stirring) using a mixer for 8 hours. Then the organoleptic test, homogeneity test, emulsion test, pH test, viscosity test, irritation test by using 6 volunteers with an age range of 20-30 years and humidity test by using 9 volunteers using a skin analyzer from before use to after use for 4 week. The results of the katuk leaf extract nanocream and blank nanocream (without extract) obtained were homogeneous, remained stable, the emulsion type was o/w, the irritation test did not cause skin irritation and the results of the moisture test were the preparation without extract (blank) from 21.3% to 40.1%, the preparation of katuk leaf extract 3% from 21.3% to 40.8% , and stock image products from 22.6% to 38.9%. The results of the analysis showed that the use of katuk leaf extract nanocream gave changes to dry skin conditions for the better and faster increase in water content in the skin so as to obtain a moisturizing effect on the skin.

Abstract

African leaves (Vernonia amygdalina Del) contain flavonoids that can provide antioxidant effectiveness fromflavonoids and also contain vitamins C and E. And its function is to neutralize free radicals. The purpose of this study was to formulate facial wash gel preparations from African leaf extract, as well as to identify and test the safety, quality, and benefits of the formulation preparations. This research method was carried out experimentally. African leaf ethanol extract was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol extract which was then concentrated with a rotary evaporator at a temperature of 40oC, then formulated in facial wash gel preparations with concentrations of 1% (Formula 1), 3% (Formula 2), and 6% (Formula 3). Evaluation of facial wash gel preparations included organoleptic examination, pH test, homogeneity, stability, viscosity, spreadability, and foaming power. Irritation test and effectiveness test using a skin analyzer on the volunteer's facial skin, the parameters measured included water content and pore size, the treatment was carried out for 4 weeks. The results of this study indicate that the evaluation of facial wash gel preparations is well formulated and stable, African leaf extract is formulated as a facial wash gel that can provide effectiveness on the volunteer's facial skin, namely increasing moisture on the skin and decreasing pore size on the volunteer's facial skin for 4 weeks of use.

Abstract

Indonesia is recognized as one of the world’s megabiodiversity countries, possessing a vast range of medicinal plants that serve as rich sources of secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids. These compounds are widely reported to exhibit significant pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antibacterial effects, thereby encouraging continuous research on their isolation and identification. This study aims to systematically review the isolation and identification methods of flavonoid compounds derived from Indonesian medicinal plants, as well as to determine the most frequently reported flavonoid types and their pharmacological relevance. A literature review approach was applied by searching three scientific databases: Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest. Keywords used included “isolation and flavonoids” (Indonesian) and “isolation and flavonoid compounds” (English). Articles were selected based on inclusion criteria comprising publication period (2019–2024), journal accreditation, and full-text accessibility. From an initial pool of 13,400 records, only 10 articles met all eligibility criteria. The reviewed studies reported various isolation techniques, including maceration using ethanol or methanol, fractionation with ethyl acetate or water, and compound identification through Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), UV–Vis spectrophotometry, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The major flavonoids identified were quercetin, flavanone, and flavonol-3-O-galactose. Overall, Indonesian medicinal plants demonstrate strong potential as natural sources of flavonoids, with isolation and identification methods proving effective in detecting compounds with significant biological activity, particularly antioxidants.
