Abstract

Performance assessment of Islamic financial institutions such as KSPPS BMT UGT Nusantara is crucial to ensure optimal resource utilisation and improved customer service. This study evaluates the efficiency of several branches of KSPPS BMT UGT Nusantara in East Java from 2018 to 2022 using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. Input variables include the number of employees, total assets, and operational costs, while output variables encompass the number of customers, total financing, and total income. The results show that during the 2018-2022 period, many branches of BMT UGT Nusantara had not yet reached optimal scale, although some had achieved efficiency levels in both production and intermediation approaches. In the production approach, 50% of branches achieved technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency, and scale efficiency, while in the intermediation approach, 55% of branches achieved the same efficiency levels. To address inefficiencies, recommended strategies include: adjusting the number of employees according to actual needs; reducing excessive operational costs by identifying and eliminating unnecessary expenses; and managing assets more effectively by reinvesting in revenue-generating activities.

Abstract

Digital hedonism, which has intensified through social media, platform-based economies, and instant consumption culture, has fostered behavioral patterns oriented toward pleasure-seeking, excessive self-presentation, and self-commodification. These developments have generated significant ethical tensions in the consumption practices of Muslim communities. This article examines the concept of zuhd as an ethical critique of digital hedonism using a qualitative library research approach. Data were drawn from classical and contemporary Islamic literature as well as empirical studies on digital consumption and Islamic economic ethics. The analysis reveals that zuhd should not be understood as hostility toward pleasure or technology, but as a value-oriented framework that regulates consumption motives in accordance with spiritual objectives (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah). In the digital context, zuhd functions as an ethical compass that mitigates consumptive pressure, strengthens self-awareness, and reorients the moral use of technology. This study offers a conceptual contribution to the development of digital consumption ethics within Islamic economic thought.

Abstract

The role of women in the economic sector extends beyond the domestic sphere to include participation in business, employment, and public decision-making. However, many women continue to experience structural barriers such as gender discrimination and limited access to economic opportunities. This phenomenon is also evident in Ngadirejo, Tulungagung, where the emping-melinjo industry dominated by Muslim women faces challenges related to business competition, resource limitations, and sustainability. This study aims to analyze the economic empowerment of Muslim women in the emping industry using the Social Entrepreneurship Model. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research describes the dynamics of women’s empowerment based on data gathered through purposive sampling involving Muslim women entrepreneurs, community leaders, and supporting institutions. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic categorization aligned with the components of social value, civil society, innovation, and economic activity. The findings reveal significant positive impacts at the individual, household, and community levels, including increased financial independence (social value), expanded access to training and business capital supported by local networks (civil society), adoption of digital tools and creative business practices (innovation), and enhanced household income and poverty reduction through women’s active involvement in production and management (economic activity). Overall, the study demonstrates that the emping-melinjo industry serves as an effective vehicle for advancing women’s economic empowerment, strengthening family welfare, and promoting gender-inclusive economic development within rural communities.

Abstract

Mobile banking application migration programs often face challenges in the form of customer resistance and anxiety towards new technology. This qualitative case study aims to analyze the process, effectiveness, and dynamics of personal communication (via WhatsApp/telephone) implemented in the application migration program at Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) KCP Surabaya Rungkut 1, from the reflective perspective of interns as direct participants. Data was collected through participatory observation and reflective documentation during the three-week program period, then analyzed thematically. The findings show three patterns of customer responses (Skeptical-Aggressive, Cooperative-Interactive, Verificative-Analytical) that require different handling strategies. A critical point occurred when interactions evolved from technical migration transactions to discussions about other products, marking the formation of trust and relational value. The main obstacles were customer technical barriers and network limitations. Critical reflection using four theoretical lenses reveals that personal communication functions multidimensionally: as a catalyst for technology acceptance (Technology Acceptance Model), a manifestation of service quality (SERVQUAL/IBSQ), a means of building interpersonal trust, and an investment in relationship marketing. The practical implication is that a personal approach to digital transformation should be viewed as a strategic investment that not only pursues adoption targets but, more importantly, converts the momentum of change into strengthening long-term customer loyalty.
