Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is a new situation that brings challenges to all sectors, including education. One of the impacts is that there is an adjustment in the implementation of learning, including practicums, which are usually held offline, turning into online learning. In this study, an analysis of the implementation of biochemistry practicum was carried out for two semesters during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study uses a descriptive case study design. Research data obtained from document analysis and questionnaires. There are five classes used as samples of this study. Questionnaires were given to 116 students. The results showed that the implementation of the biochemistry practicum had been carried out well. This is marked by positive responses from students through questionnaires. Even so, there are significant differences in student achievement compared to conditions after the pandemic. This shows that practicum activities, especially those related to laboratory skills, cannot be facilitated with online learning

Abstract

First-year student's satisfaction has considered an important factor in the quality education offered by the university program. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship among gender, a reason to participate in STEM-related subjects, program, and the university support on first-year student's satisfaction of STEM learning. The methods used in this study surveyed student's satisfaction using adapted interest and recruitment in the science questionnaire (IRIS Q) instrument. The questionnaire comprised question items covering school science experiences, sources of inspiration for the choice of education, expectations for future job, first-year experiences as a STEM student, and attitudes to gender equity in STEM. A total of 448 students, first-year students from STEM-related programs, have participated voluntarily in this study. The structural equating model assisted by computer program IBM SPSS Amos 20 was employed to analyze the hypothesized model. The results from the model showed that reason and university support have a positive direct effect on first-year students' satisfaction with STEM learning. From this study, it is suggested for the university to improve first-year student's satisfaction by helping STEM students to develop appropriate expectations of the program, facilitating teaching quality to meet STEM students' learning, and assisting students in developing positive attitudes toward their future carriers.

Abstract

Physics education graduates will produce quality teacher candidates. However, physics education students have difficulty understanding basic electronics lectures. Multiple representation-based lectures are needed to improve students' cognitive understanding and skills. This representative multiple is adapted to student learning styles. The problem comes from the lack of references that explain the learning styles of prospective physics teacher students with multiple representative integrated basic electronics lectures. The problem formulation that arises is how students' learning styles are presented and how basic electronics lectures are represented. The method used is mixed methods with a data triangulation design. Quantitative data comes from questionnaires of 50 students and qualitative data comes from interviews with lecturers teaching basic electronics courses. This research was conducted at a university in West Sumatra. The research results show that student understanding is still low and research needs to be carried out regarding the development of basic electronics programs based on multiple representations to improve students' cognitive understanding
