Abstract

Most students find writing hard since it requires a complex process and strategies. They should cover not only all the dimensions of writing, such as content, organization of ideas, language use, mechanics, but also other important aspects such as, how they convey their ideas and do the editing process. They usually miss these aspects from the very beginning, the pre-writing process.  Therefore, the teacher should give an effective strategy for the students to write. It is critical to provide them strategies so that they can assist themselves in their writing process. Self-assessment is one of the strategies that encourages students to be able to think about their purpose in writing and to reflect on what and how much they are learning. This article discusses the benefits and practical implementation of self-assessment to assist the students’ writing process. Teachers should implement it frequently because it needs a process to train the students to develop their self-efficacy.

The research design deployed was descriptive qualitative. Two art practitioners served as the subjects of the study and the data were obtained through an interview process. The data were analyzed using four steps data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. In addition, library study was also used to understand and study theories from various literature or sources related to the study. The findings showed that Lahbako Dance tells the story of the tobacco processing process starting from harvesting to packaging. In its development, the dance is modified because of the need for innovation and adaptation to developments and promoting its sustainability. In language teaching, its success depends on the use of teaching materials that accurately reflect authentic language use and cultural settings. Lahbako Dance can be inserted into the teaching and learning activities as an authentic material that can promote students' language skills, motivation, and cultural awareness. By doing so, local culture can also be well-preserved. Further studies related to the developments of other authentic materials are suggested.

Abstract

This article examines the use of role-play in teaching pragmatic skills to the vocational students with the aim of promoting authentic interaction from Indonesian vocational students of English as a foreign language (EFL). The investigation adopts a qualitative perspective, as it recognizes the constraints of pre-set scripts in cultivating context-specific communication skills, by analyzing how student-generated role play in diverse contexts may cultivate pragmatic attunement and facilitate participation. Students in the fourth semester of an English for Tour and Travel class worked together to design workplace communication tasks based on video models and real-life experiences. Research data included classroom observations, video recordings of students’ performances, and post-project interviews. It is found that the students progressed in the use of speech acts, politeness strategies, and turn taking in spoken interactions. These roles play activities enabled not only improvised speech practice and peer feedback but also provided an opportunity for language learners to reflect cultural norms and communication intentions. The research reinforces the importance of moving away from static textbook discussions to the dynamic real-world tasks that approximate actual use of the language. It points to the need for the inclusion of pragmatic competence in speaking instruction, especially in vocational EFL contexts where work-related communication and sociopragmatic awareness are important.
