Abstract

One of the prominent alterations in 2013 Curriculum is that this curriculum does not only put an emphasis on cognitive competence but also affective competence. Consequently, the evaluation must be carried out to assess students’ affective assessment. Nevertheless, the issue concerning the complexity of affective assessment has been circulating for years. Therefore, the present study aims to scrutinize teachers’ techniques, challenges, and their voices with regard to development and the implementation of 2013 Curriculum. This study utilizes a qualitative research by using descriptive qualitative design. One teacher, who has implemented 2013 Curriculum, in a senior high school was selected as the respondent in this study. Interviews and document analysis were conducted to obtain the data. This study reveals that there are two evaluation techniques carried out by the teacher specifically observations and peer-assessment. Furthermore, two challenges are identified as teachers’ shortcomings for instance inadequate acquaintance of 2013 Curriculum and time availability in assessment process. Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of cohesive devices in students’ expository writing. In particular, the study focuses on types of cohesive device used by the students and how cohesive devices contribute to their writing. This study employs qualitative research through a case study design. Public senior high school in Kuningan is chosen as the site for this study. Nine students of twelfth grade are involved in the study as the respondents. Documents of nine students’ expository writings are the data of this study. The data are analyzed by using the concept of cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) which covers reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. Analyses show that the respondents only use four cohesive devices in their writing i.e. reference, substitution, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. These devices also contribute to the process of keeping track of the participants, avoiding repetition and text redundancy, enhancing logical connection between parts of text, and engaging the readers to the core argument of the text. The study infers that it is still problematic although most of the students apply many cohesive devices in their writing. This is because students have not received sufficient training concerning how to use appropriate cohesive devices. Therefore, they should be guided to utilize appropriate cohesive devices in their writing. Keywords: cohesive devices, cohesion, EFL students, expository writing, case study

Abstract

The study concerning political law of Sidawangi society towards customary right over “Oro-Oro” land is commonly triggered by the presence of the arbitrary village officers. Historically, “Oro-Oro” land is characterised as a communal land, but its management is initiated exclusively through an agreement and doubtful rights. The legal law concerning customary right over “Oro-Oro” land is truly expected by Sidawangi society. The action of arbitrary village officers is deemed to be one of crucial factors to realise their expectation.Furthermore, the rumour of switching “Oro-Oro” land into plantation land by the corporation also toughens the strong desire of Sidawangi society to realize their expectation. The present study aims to investigate the significance of legal law and the warranty of customary rights both in the 1945 Constitution, agrarian law and international conventions. This study is conducted through an interview to Sidawangi society and literature studies regarding customary right over “Oro-Oro” land as expected by Sidawangi society. Customary right over “Oro-Oro” land, initiated by Sidawangi Society in Sumber Sub-District, originally refers to a communal area which has been exclusively possessed. In other words, this type of land is not privately preserved. The people in Sidawangi society are only allowed to maintain and gather the result. The arbitrary of village officers seize trees in “Oro-Oro” land without any kinds of certain customary right. The phenomenon in Lampung has provided insight regarding the conflict occurs when the people expect is not fulfilled. The residents inevitably expect the existence of political law in society towards customary land. The legal protection towards customary right over “Oro-Oro” land is essentially guaranteed by 1945 constitution, Basic Agrarian Law Constitution, and international convention of indigenous community.

This study uses qualitative research through case study design. The participants in this study are nine students of twelfth grade in a public senior high school in Kuningan. The data in the present study are the documents of students’ expository texts. The data are analyzed by using the frameworks of cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The findings indicate that there is only one substitution found in this study namely nominal substitution. The present study also delineates that the use of substitution contributes to the process of avoiding repetition and text redundancy. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the use and the contribution of substitution in students’ expository texts are still considered low. Thus, the encouragement is very necessary for the students to use appropriate substitution to make their texts more cohesive.
