Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the implicatures, the types of the implicatures, and the intended meaning of the implicatures employed by the characters in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This study was a descriptive qualitative study with corpus-based approach. The data were collected through some procedures, namely reading the novel repeatedly and thoroughly, determining the utterances containing implicatures in dialogues based on the relevance theory, and selecting and organizing the data to be analyzed. To analyze the data, the procedures were presenting and describing the data,  interpreting the data by referring to the relevance theory, determining the implicated premises and implicated conclusions, determining the strongly implicated conclusions and weakly implicated conclusions, and interpreting and describing the intended meanings of the implicatures. From the results, there were 60 implicatures found in the novel and the two types of them were strong and weak implicatures. As the follow-up, a dissemination to the second semester students of Graduate Program of Sriwijaya University was conducted which yielded to the result that there was no significant association between the respondents’ knowledge of implicatures and relevance theory and their performance in analyzing implicatures using the theory with the p-value of 0.406 (p-value > 0.05).

A formative evaluation was conducted to determine the product’s validity, practicality, and potential impact. Experts evaluated the content, media, and instructional design for validity. The results indicated that the established product was extremely valid, scored an average of 3.65 for all evaluated elements. Practicality was rated highly in one-to-one and small-group evaluations, with average scores of 3.55 and 3.35. The results of the field test showed that the established texts had a high potential for impact, as 79.16 percent of students earned the required passing grade. Abstract

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where they are and what they are doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is going around them. The growing evidence of the use of mindfulness practice on promoting psychological wellbeing and self-regulation is in line with the increasing use of mobile applications in this digital era nowadays especially during the COVID-19 pandemic era. This study aims to find out the influence of two mobile-based mindfulness apps, Calm and Headspace, on the pre-service teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia studying online during COVID-19 pandemic era. The 43 subjects were given 20-session-mindfulness intervention (guided and independent trainings) using the two mobile-based mindfulness apps. The data from the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), the classroom observations, and the written interviews were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results from the t-test analysis on the FFMQ show that there was an improvement on the subjects’ mindfulness level after the intervention. Furthermore, the results of the observation and the interview show that the oral narrations of the contents in the apps were found useful as a means to provide positive learning environment before and during the learning practice. Moreover, the oral narrations of the contents in the apps were specifically found useful as a means to practice listening comprehension. Therefore, besides being served as a means to practice and improve the pre-service teachers’ mindfulness level, mobile-based mindfulness apps could also be used to enhance one’s English listening comprehension skills. The use of mobile-based mindfulness applications can be promising for pre-service teachers in Indonesia who need to have balance academic and social-emotional skills to support their role in teaching students in the future.

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the significance of Guru Penggerak (GP) in developing the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of English teachers. This was done by investigating the need for GP among English teachers to enhance their CPD and identifying the components or parts of Guru Penggerak that support their continuous professional development. A qualitative research method was used to investigate the phenomena, with two English teachers who joined Guru Penggerak Batch 1 in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia as participants. Triangulation and member checks were conducted to ensure the dependability of the data obtained from interviews and documentation. The data were described and interpreted using codification, checklists, and thematic analysis. The findings of the study show that it is necessary for teachers of English to join Guru Penggerak to enhance their continuous professional development. After joining the program, English teachers were able to improve three components of their professional development: Self-Development, Scientific Publication, and Innovative Works. It was also found that GP mostly encouraged teachers of English in their pedagogical competencies, but less so in their proficiencies. However, GP provided English teachers with the eagerness to improve their English proficiency individually. Additionally, the study proved that Guru Penggerak (GP) helped advance English teachers’ careers, with some appointed as school principals and assessors of GP in subsequent Batches.
