Abstract

The objectives of this study were to discover the students’ speaking performance, speaking problems, and factors associated with the problems. The participants were the university students of an English education program in South Sumatera. To collect the data, speaking performance test, questionnaire, and open-ended questions were used. The findings showed that 42% of the participants did well and 58% did not perform well in the speaking test. The speaking problems were categorized as affected-related problems (self-confidence and anxiety), socially related problems (difficulties to find opportunities to learn English and comprehension in speaking class), and linguistically related problems (fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation). The factors causing the speaking problems are lack of general knowledge, lack of speaking practice, fear of mistake, lack of words usage and grammar practice, low motivation, low participation, reading laziness, shyness, less dictionary usage, nervousness, fear of criticism, and unfamiliar words pronunciation. The data were calculated using Chi-Square Association with p-value (603.508) which is greater than the critical value (70.003). Therefore, there is a significant association between the speaking problems and the factors causing the problems. Keywords: causes of problems; speaking performance; speaking problems

Abstract

Previous studies found that academic motivation has a role in affecting academic performance. Along with that, the experts lately investigate mindfulness as one of the cognitive aspects related to student’s performance. This study aimed to find out the correlations among mindfulness, academic motivation, and academic performance in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) student in Indonesia. Using a quantitative correlation design, this study involved 170 students from English education study program in a university in Indonesia. Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), and grade point average (GPA) official data were used as data collection instruments. Furthermore, to measure the correlation and contribution between the variables, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and regression analyses were conducted. The result of this study showed that most students had low mindfulness scale, high AMS with a dominant extrinsic motivation type, and very satisfactory GPA. However, there was no correlation among mindfulness, academic motivation, and academic performance. Moreover, it was found that only amotivation subscale has negative significant correlation with academic performance.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate a types of cultures represented in the EFL textbooks for the seventh graders. Two EFL textbooks were analyzed: ‘When English Rings a Bell’ and ‘English on Sky 1’. The research applied a qualitative content analysis as method and Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal social semiotic approach as the technique of analyzing data. The result reveals that imbalances in the representation of cultural types exist. Source culture is represented more dominantly compared to target and international culture. It implies that both the authors and the publishers of the textbooks prioritize the learners’ identities construction and characters education rather than focus on the use of language as the lingua franca. Consequently, it could constrain the opportunities for learners to acquire international cultural knowledge and become successful intercultural communicators. Therefore, English teachers need to take an active role in selecting appropriate textbooks and adding supplementary materials or activities to patch up the shortcomings of the textbooks.

Abstract

Personal competence is one of the four main competencies that teachers in Indonesia must possess. However, the literature has been still limited on the teacher's personal competence in the EFL context. Therefore, the present study aims to discover the application of vocational English teachers’ personal competence and its implication on the teaching and learning process. To achieve the purpose of this study, a qualitative approach in a form of case study was employed. Two teachers of English consisting of one male and one female teacher participated in this study and shared their stories about the application of their personal competence at the school. A semi-structured interview became the instrument to obtain the data. The findings of this investigation indicated that the personal competence of EFL teachers was revealed from teachers’ obedience towards regulation, the application of their religious values, the way they treat their students, the honesty and model they demonstrated, the teachers’ maturity, wiseness, and assertiveness, the teachers’ work ethic, the teachers’ confidence in carrying out their duties and the pride towards their profession. The study also discussed how the teachers’ personal competence might affect the teaching and learning process.
