Abstract

Bullying occurs frequently in educational and school environments, workplaces, homes, and playgrounds. North Sulawesi Province has a higher bullying rate than the national average, at 27.83 percent versus 26.80 percent. Bullying occurs more frequently among Grade 5 elementary school students than in middle and high school. The study seeks to identify the factors that contribute to bullying among the alpha generation in Manado, North Sulawesi Province. The qualitative research technique focuses on two elementary schools in Manado: Advent Tikala Elementary School for private elementary schools and SDN 06 state elementary schools. Data collection began with focus group discussions with children and their parents, followed by interviews with stakeholders such as teachers, school principals, childcare NGOs, universities, regional government (province, Manado city), and the media. Observations on behaviours that lead to bullying. Data about bullying in school has been documented. The data were analysed descriptively. Research on the variables that produce bullying, beginning with the family, has revealed parenting patterns, a lack of parental attention, verbal and nonverbal pressure, and kid copying. Both peers and children choose the wrong friends, engage in harmful behaviour, and establish gangs. Third, media (inappropriate use of gadgets, premature introduction of gadgets, and lack of parental control). The fourth culture involves calling their parents' names. The five schools have not implemented character education optimally, and educators have not improved their bullying prevention practices. The six internal/character characteristics are as follows: children with temperamental, envious, jealous, and spiteful personalities are more likely to be perpetrators, while quiet youngsters dislike socializing, and less bright children are the victims. Recommendations necessitate efforts with parents.

Abstract

In contemporary democratic societies, political apologies have evolved into strategic rhetorical acts used by state leaders to manage public perception, repair moral standing, and reinforce political values. In Indonesia, President Joko Widodo’s public apology near the end of his presidency attracted widespread attention and provoked discourse about its underlying ideological motives. Rather than a spontaneous expression of regret, the apology appeared to be a calculated act of political communication, shaped by cultural values and designed to influence the public’s perception of his leadership. This study aims to uncover the ideological tendencies embedded in Jokowi’s apology by analyzing how the apology is represented in two prominent English-language newspapers in Indonesia, The Jakarta Post (TJP) and The Jakarta Globe (TJG). It seeks to determine how transitivity choices in the language are used to convey deeper political and cultural meanings. Employing a qualitative research design supported by quantitative content analysis, the study integrates Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), particularly the transitivity framework, to examine 43 clauses extracted from news articles published in TJP and TJG. The transitivity analysis reveals that material processes dominate the discourse (40.5%), followed by mental (25.5%) and verbal (23.2%) processes. In terms of participant roles, Actor and Sayer occur most frequently, indicating that Jokowi strategically presented himself as an active doer and a sincere speaker. These linguistic patterns suggest a deliberate construction of identity, emphasizing responsibility, empathy, and leadership. The analysis further shows how Jokowi's apology aligns with Javanese cultural ideals of humility and Islamic values of repentance, which are embedded in Indonesian socio-political discourse. The findings contribute to a broader understanding of how political apologies are not only personal but also ideological acts embedded in media discourse. This study highlights the usefulness of integrating CDA and SFL in uncovering how language functions to maintain power, shape public memory, and preserve political legitimacy in post-presidency contexts. It also underscores the cultural specificity of apology strategies in Indonesia, suggesting that future discourse studies consider local traditions and values when analyzing political speech.

Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the ideological messages conveyed by the President Republic of Indonesia, Mr.Prabowo Subianto. Political speeches are powerful tools that leaders use to express their ideas, show their leadership style, and influence public opinion. In this study, the focus is on a speech delivered by the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, in front of the Turkish Parliament in early 2025. The speech is seen as a reflection of his early foreign policy direction and his efforts to build Indonesia’s image on the international stage, especially in its relationship with Turkey. This research aims to explore the ideological messages in that speech. Using a qualitative descriptive approach which applies Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model, and to support the analysis researcher will use the transitivity method from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), This method helps break down the functions of each sentence to understand how language is used to shape meaning, show power, and express political ideas. The main focus is on how the speech builds certain messages about Indonesia’s national identity, political direction, and position in the world. The study also tries to understand what kinds of power relations are hidden in the political language and what social or political effects the speech might have. Through this analysis, the research hopes to give deeper insights into how language can be used not just to inform, but also to influence, persuade, and shape public thinking at a national and global audience.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the strategies that EFL teachers use to overcome learning barriers in the classroom. A mixed methods approach was used to collect data through a Likert-scale questionnaire with 30 teachers and interviews with three teachers from various regions in Indonesia. Quantitative findings revealed that teachers frequently employed strategies such as differentiated instruction, motivational support, and digital media integration. Through thematic coding, the qualitative analysis further revealed specific techniques, including simplifying materials, employing collaborative learning, managing student focus, and encouraging passive learners through praise and rapport building. These results underscore the importance of adaptive, student-centered teaching practices for addressing the diverse challenges in EFL classrooms. The study suggests that a combination of cognitive, emotional, and technological strategies is essential for improving learning outcomes.
