Abstract. Teachers’ competences and students’ motivation have been long suspected to have influence on students’ English ability. Some studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship. However, some information is unobserved. This study intended to fill the gap in literature concerning the relationship among teacher’s competences, students’ learning motivation, and students’ English proficiency at Junior High Schools in OKUT. The samples of the study were 30 teachers and 918 students. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between the English teachers’ competence and the English proficiency of students showed by robtained = .363, (p=.49) which was higher than the rtable (.361). Then, there was a positive significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their English proficiency achievement (r= .711, p = .000). Meanwhile, the correlation between teachers’ competence and students’ motivation in learning English also showed that there was a positive significant correlation between these variables ( r = .753, p = .000) . At last, the correlation was also found between the predictor variables (teachers’ competence and students’ learning English motivation) and criterion variable (students’ English proficiency) with correlation coefficient 0.758 significant at .01 level. The contributions given by predictor variables to criterion variable were also analyzed. The result of stepwise method showed that predictor variables contributed to 54.4% of the criterion variable. Keywords: teachers’ competences, students’ learning motivation, students’ English proficiency, correlation, contribution

This qualitative study employed a case study design. Questionnaires, interview, and documentation were used to collect the data. This study applied two questionnaires. The first questionnaire was used to obtain data about the types of teachers' CPD activities and its data were analyzed qualitatively. The second questionnaire in the form of a Likert scale was used to determine the teachers' perceptions of CPD and its data were analyzed descriptively. The data of the interview was analyzed using thematic analysis. Some copy of teachers’ CPD activities certificates were also used as proof of the teachers’ participation in the CPD program. The results indicated that the teachers had undertaken self-development and scientific publication activities. They had good perception of CPD and perceived it as activities to make them become more effective teachers. Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the developed HOTS-based descriptive texts in Indonesian context for senior high school students. In conducting this study Akker (1999) development concept consisting of analysis, design, evaluation, and revision was applied. The formative evaluation consisted of self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field test adopted from Tessmer (1993) was used to see the validity, practicality, and the potential effect of the developed product. The result of the expert review showed that the average score of all aspects of the developed product was 3.71> 2.51, which means it was categorized as very high. Based on the practicality evaluation results in the one-to-one and small group evaluations, the product was highly practical since the average score in both phases was 2.9 and 3.07, respectively. The potential effect of the product was good enough (81%), although 4 out of 21 students in the field test could not reach the minimum mastery ≥70.

Abstract

For novice EFL lecturers, the early years of teaching are quite challenging, as what they find ‘ideal’ in pre-service education is different from the realities of the classroom. The unfamiliar curriculum, limited supports from institutions, and socialization issues are general challenges for new lecturers. This study aimed to explore the voices of novice EFL Indonesian lecturers about the challenges faced and the strategies used in their early teaching experience. In this qualitative case study, the data were collected through interviews with four participants (novice EFL Indonesian lecturers). This study found that there were two major challenges that novice EFL lecturers faced in their early teaching experience, namely student-related challenges (students’ low proficiency in English, students’ negative learning attitude, students’ low critical thinking) and institution-related challenges (unavailability of suitable syllabus and high demand of the university to the teachers). In responding to student-related challenges, novice EFL lecturers employed some strategies such as grouping students into mixed-ability groups, adjusting the materials to the student’s level of proficiency, setting rules and consequences with students, and designing activities that promote critical thinking. In coping with institution-related challenges, these teachers collaborate with other English lecturers to develop a module and they consult with their coordinators to navigate the situation.
