Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the skin characteristics of early adult consumers using data collected from a skin analyzer and explore the implications for cosmetic product formulation. The research sample consisted of 73 participants, with the majority aged between 17 and 20 years. The measured skin parameters included moisture, pores, melanin, acne (acne), wrinkles, and sensitivity. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and consumer segmentation techniques. The findings revealed that the early adult consumers in the sample generally exhibited low skin moisture levels (56.2%), enlarged skin pores (mean of 3.90 out of 5), fair skin pigmentation (69.9% with a melanin value of 1), severe acne severity (56.2% with an acne value of 5), minimal wrinkling (53.4% with a wrinkle value of 1), and high skin sensitivity (38.4% with a sensitivity value of 5). Based on consumer segmentation, formulation recommendations were provided for groups with dry and sensitive skin, severe acne and enlarged pores, and normal-to-oily skin with minimal wrinkle concerns. These findings highlight the need for targeted cosmetic formulations to address the specific skin concerns faced by early adult consumers. Although limitations such as a relatively small sample size and a focus on objective measurements existed, this study provides valuable insights for data-driven cosmetic product development. Further studies are recommended to investigate lifestyle and environmental factors, incorporate subjective data, and explore inter-group differences within the early adult consumer population. This research demonstrates the importance of evidence-based skin data analysis in informing cosmetic formulation strategies. By understanding and catering to the unique needs of early adult consumers, the cosmetic industry can develop more effective and satisfying products, driving market growth within this critical consumer demographic. A data-driven approach to cosmetic product development will become increasingly crucial in adapting to evolving consumer needs and preferences.

Abstract

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can induce erythema, sunburn, and skin sensitivity, culminating in dermal damage. The application of sunscreen mitigates potential skin harm resulting from solar radiation. This investigation aims to ascertain the optimal formulation for lotion preparations incorporating Orthosiphon aristatus leaf extract and evaluate the sunscreen efficacy of said formulations through in vitro testing. Extraction procedures involved ethanol maceration, followed by phytochemical characterization of the resultant extract. Formulation of the extract into oil-in-water (O/W) lotion preparations was executed, with optimization conducted utilizing the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method, incorporating varied concentrations of stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, and olive oil to assess their impact on lotion viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion. Subsequent evaluation encompassed in vitro assessment of sunscreen activity for both the lotion and extract. Findings revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, and tannins in the extract. Optimal lotion formulation, determined via the SLD method, yielded concentrations of 2.00, 4.22, and 8.78 for stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, and olive oil, respectively. Formulation optimization was guided by minimizing viscosity while maximizing spreadability and adhesion. Confirmation studies underscored the predictive capacity of the SLD method in determining viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion of the cat's whiskers leaf extract lotion. SPF values for the extract and lotion were recorded as 33.63 ± 0.963 and 2.54 ± 0.001, respectively, at a concentration of 30,000 ppm.

Abstract

Sunkist orange peel is a rich source of antioxidants beneficial for skin protection, making it a promising ingredient in cosmetic products like peel-off gel masks. This study investigated the sensory profile, primary irritation index (PII), and antioxidant activity of peel-off gel mask formulations containing Sunkist orange peel extract (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck). The extract was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol, with a mean yield of 9.95 ± 1,2 %. Phytochemical analysis identified the presence of polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids. The extract was incorporated into peel-off gel mask formulations and evaluated for quality parameters (organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity, and drying speed), sensory characteristics, PII, and antioxidant activity using the DPPH method. All formulations fulfilled the required quality standards. Sensory evaluation indicated that Formula III (FIII) was the most favored by respondents across all stages of application (before, during, and after use). The irritation index test on 25 volunteers revealed no irritation, with PII values ranging from 0 to 0.4, classifying the preparations as non-irritating. Antioxidant evaluation showed that the peel-off gel with 2% extract exhibited an IC-50 value of 23.38 ppm, categorizing it as a very strong antioxidant. These findings highlight the potential of Sunkist orange peel extract in peel-off gel masks, combining excellent antioxidant properties with favorable sensory and safety profiles. Further optimization may enhance its application in skincare products.

Abstract

Abstract

Aloe vera and basil leaves have been recognized for their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Combining these extracts into a gel formulation offers convenience in application. However, research concerning potential irritations associated with its use remains limited. This study aims to assess irritation in humans resulting from the application of a gel formulation containing basil and aloe vera extracts using patch testing. The gel formulation is prepared with a 2% concentration of the extracts, with a 1:1 ratio of basil to aloe vera extracts. Optimization is achieved by varying carbopol concentrations and the final pH of the gel formulation. The parameters used for determining the optimal formula include organoleptic characteristics, viscosity, spreadability, adhesiveness, and pH of the formulation. The optimal formula is subsequently subjected to stability testing over four weeks and irritation testing using patch methods. A total of 25 volunteers are involved in the irritation testing. Observations are made up to 72 hours after the removal of the formulation to ensure the absence of delayed irritation effects. Aloe vera and basil extractions using ethanol as a solvent yield sequential yields of 1.7% and 3%, respectively. Quality evaluation for Formulations I (FI), II (FII), and III (FIII) includes spreadability, adhesiveness, and viscosity, as follows: (4.1 cm; 5.4 seconds; 5504 mPa.s); (6.5 cm; 4.1 seconds; 3480 mPa.s); and (5.2 cm; 4.2 seconds; 6340 mPa.s), respectively. FII is selected as the optimal formula because it exhibits wider spreadability and lower viscosity compared to FI and FIII (P <0.05). Stability testing for FII shows that the formula remains stable during storage for all quality testing parameters (P > 0.05). The Primary Irritation Index (PII) for FII has a value of 0.0216, indicating that it does not cause irritation during patch testing.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin disorder primarily caused by the proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes. In response to increasing demand for natural and safer therapeutic alternatives, this study investigated the phytochemical composition, total flavonoid content, and antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of Myristica fragrans flesh. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids—classes of compounds widely recognized for their antimicrobial properties. The total flavonoid content (TFC), determined using the aluminum chloride colorimetric method, was found to be 0.1582 ± 0.0044 mg quercetin equivalents per gram of dry extract. Antibacterial assays using the disc diffusion method demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition of both Staphylococcus aureus and P. acnes, with greater efficacy observed against P. acnes. These results suggest that nutmeg flesh extract possesses significant antibacterial potential, particularly as a candidate for anti-acne cosmetic formulations. Moreover, this study highlights the underexplored value of nutmeg flesh—a byproduct of spice processing—as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds for skincare applications.

Abstract

This study investigated the antibacterial activity of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) extract against Propionibacterium acnes  through in vitro and molecular docking approaches. The nutmeg flesh was extracted using ultrasonication with 96% ethanol, yielding 8.21% extract. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and steroids. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using the microdilution method, determining Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values of 0.5% and 1%, respectively. Molecular docking analysis was performed to understand the interaction between nutmeg's bioactive compounds and three essential Propionibacterium Acnes proteins: Sialidase (7LBV), lipase (5H6G), and Penicillin-Binding Protein 2 (3UPO). Among the tested compounds, myristicin showed the strongest binding affinity with 7LBV (-6.8 kcal/mol), while lignan exhibited notable interactions with 3UPO (-6.6 kcal/mol) and 5H6G (-5.9 kcal/mol). The molecular interactions were primarily stabilized through hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding with specific amino acid residues. These findings suggest that nutmeg extract possesses significant antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium Acnes, potentially mediated through multiple molecular targets, supporting its development as a natural anti-acne ingredient.
