Abstract

Until the early 20th century, Sasak society regarded Muslim women as second class citizens unworthy of receiving education similar to their male counterparts. This perception changed in 1943 when a special educational institution for Muslimah was established. This study aims to explain the life of the Sasak community prior to the establishment of Nahdlatul Banat Diniyah Islamiyah, the development of Islamic education for Sasak women, and the implications of gender equality in education for the advancement of Sasak Muslim women from the perspective of the hierarchy of human needs. Methodologically, this study utilizes a historical approach, incorporating data analysis hierarchy of human needs theory. Results in this paper indicate that the Sasak society, prior to the inception of NBDI, can be categorized into three distinct phases: the initial phase marked by the dominance of animism and dynamism beliefs, the succeeding phase marked the era of Hindu-Buddhist influence, followed by the third phase distinguished by the impact of Islamic influence. The subsequent discussion focuses on the inception and development of education, initially concentrated on males. In 1943, a bright future for women's education found its momentum with the establishment of the first Islamic educational institution dedicated to women. Since that time, considerable advancements have been observed in the presence of Sasak women. Examining hierarchy of human needs, Sasak women after conducted advocacy for gender equality has been changed. This has led to an equitable standing between men and women, ultimately attaining self-actualization as the apex of their hierarchy of needs.

Abstract

Historical thinking is one of the primary objectives of contemporary history education. However, empirical studies consistently indicate that students’ historical thinking skills remain limited because history instruction is still dominated by the transmission of factual, text-oriented knowledge. Therefore, an instructional model that promotes historical thinking is needed. This study examines the effectiveness of a Project-based Learning (PjBL) model integrated with historical methods in improving students’ historical thinking skills. A quasi-experimental study employing a non-equivalent control group design was conducted with 124 eleventh-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations, project-task analysis, and historical thinking tests, and analyzed using an independent-samples t-test with SPSS 25.0. The findings revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (t (122) = 7.083, p < 0.001), indicating that the integrated PjBL model effectively enhanced students’ historical thinking skills. This study contributes to history education by providing empirical evidence that integrating Project-based Learning with the historical method offers an effective pedagogical approach for fostering historical thinking, thereby extending the application of PjBL beyond content mastery toward disciplinary historical reasoning.

Abstract

This article examines Bugis migration to Labuhan Lombok and explains how migrant families built durable social, economic, and maritime lives in a Sasak coastal environment. The article is developed from a qualitative historical study using oral testimony, observation, documents, and relevant literature. Four stages of historical method were applied: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The thesis records fourteen informants from Bugis and Sasak settlements in Labuhan Lombok. The findings identify two principal migration contexts: trade-oriented mobility associated with nineteenth-century inter-island commerce and family displacement connected to insecurity in South Sulawesi during the 1950s. Settlement was sustained through kinship chains, proximity to the sea, common Islamic affiliation, everyday exchange, interethnic marriage, and respect for local norms. Economic adaptation relied on fishing, diving, fish and shrimp-paste trading, and inter-island commerce. Maritime practices also changed from wind-powered sailing and experiential navigation to motorized boats, global positioning systems, generators, and more commercialized fish marketing. The Bugis presence in Labuhan Lombok should therefore be understood not merely as population movement, but as a locally negotiated maritime adaptation in which inherited knowledge, migrant networks, and technological change combined to produce interethnic integration and coastal economic transformation.

Abstract

History learning in vocational schools is often perceived as content-heavy and monotonous, which can reduce students’ attention and willingness to participate. This study aimed to develop a vlog-based learning medium, determine its feasibility, and examine its effectiveness in strengthening the learning interest of grade X students at SMKN 1 Jerowaru. The study employed research and development adapted from the Borg and Gall model and implemented seven stages: needs analysis, planning, preliminary product development, expert validation, initial revision, field testing, and product refinement. Data were collected through expert-validation sheets and pretest-posttest learning-interest questionnaires administered to 23 students in the Graphic Design program. Product feasibility was assessed by material, media, and learning experts, while effectiveness was examined using descriptive percentages, a normality test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. The product achieved feasibility scores of 80.0% from material experts, 76.7% from media experts, and 79.3% from learning experts. Students’ learning-interest score increased from 43% before using the vlog video to 81% afterward. The Mann-Whitney test produced Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000, indicating a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest results. These findings show that vlog-based media is feasible and potentially effective for creating a more engaging, contextual, and digitally relevant history-learning experience in vocational high schools.

Abstract

Bamboo weaving in Loyok Village is a cultural heritage practice that integrates inherited craftsmanship, local resource use, and community livelihoods. This study aims to identify its potential, analyze preservation challenges, and explain the impacts of ongoing conservation efforts in Loyok Village, Sikur District, East Lombok Regency. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed from July to September 2025. Data were collected through observation, structured and unstructured interviews, and documentation involving 13 informants, including artisans, art-shop owners, guides, local administrative heads, and village staff. Data were analyzed interactively through collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing and verification, while prolonged observation and triangulation were used to strengthen credibility. The findings reveal three major areas of potential: the availability of bamboo and surrounding raw-material supplies, intergenerational weaving skills, and opportunities for product development, digital markets, and educational tourism. Preservation is constrained by competition from inexpensive and practical modern products, declining interest among younger people, and limited local consumer appreciation of the value of manual craftsmanship. Conservation efforts generate economic benefits through household income and employment, while reinforcing local identity, cultural awareness, and the use of relatively environmentally friendly materials. Sustainable preservation therefore requires apprenticeship-based regeneration, design innovation that maintains authenticity, stronger digital marketing, experiential cultural tourism, and coordinated collaboration among village government, artisans, educational institutions, and tourism actors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the existence of Belian Sasak as a traditional alternative medicine amidst the advancement of modern medical treatment and its impact on the community in Dasan Ketangga, Kembang Sari, East Lombok. Using qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach, this study involved in-depth interviews with four Belian Sasak, community leaders, and service users. The results show that Belian Sasak traditional medicine still exists and is trusted by the community despite increasingly sophisticated medical treatments. The main factors maintaining this existence are family factors and belief in ancestral heritage. The impacts of Belian Sasak's existence include: (1) helping the community in terms of treatment costs because there is no fixed tariff; (2) serving as an alternative treatment for diseases that cannot be cured medically, especially those caused by spiritual factors; and (3) preserving ancestral knowledge about traditional medicinal plants. This study concludes that Belian Sasak not only functions as a healer but also as an agent of local wisdom preservation that plays an important role in the Sasak community's health system.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the symbolic meaning of the Limbungan traditional house architecture in Perigi Village, Suela, East Lombok and its historical development. The research employs a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. Data collection was conducted through observation, in-depth interviews with customary leaders, traditional figures, and community leaders, as well as documentation. Data analysis techniques use ethnographic methods to systematically study human culture. The results show that the Limbungan traditional house has deep cultural significance and has existed since the colonial era. These traditional houses not only function as dwellings but also as symbols of Limbungan community identity. The construction uses natural materials such as earth, bamboo, wood, and thatch. The Limbungan traditional house follows the traditional Sasak architectural structure consisting of bale (house) and panteq (barn) that face each other in pairs. House components include atep bale (roof), julu lawang (yard), pager (wall), lawang (door), and undak-undak (stairs), each carrying symbolic meanings that reflect cultural values, beliefs, and local wisdom of the Sasak Limbungan community. This research contributes to cultural heritage preservation and understanding of Nusantara traditional architecture.

Abstract

This study analyzes the social and economic roles and continued existence of Tembe Nggoli woven cloth among the Mbojo community in Sangia Village, Sape District, Bima Regency. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through field observations, structured and unstructured interviews, and documentation. Informants included community elders, senior and active women weavers, and village officials. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings show that Tembe Nggoli has a dual position as cultural heritage and a source of livelihood. Socially, it functions as a marker of Mbojo identity, a symbol of honor, a medium for transmitting values, and an important element in customary ceremonies, weddings, religious activities, and the Rimpu dressing tradition. Social change has broadened its use from selected social groups to the wider community and contemporary fashion, although this democratization has reduced part of its former sacred character. Economically, weaving provides primary or supplementary income for women, supports household needs and children's education, and creates opportunities in the creative economy and cultural tourism. The continuity of Tembe Nggoli is constrained by weak intergenerational regeneration, lengthy production, limited marketing capacity, and competition from modern textiles. Strengthening weavers' organizations, innovating products without separating motifs from their cultural meanings, documenting local knowledge, utilizing natural dyes, and expanding digital marketing are therefore essential to connect cultural preservation with sustainable community welfare.

Abstract

This study examines the historical transformation of Klenang Nunggal and its relationship with social change in Pringgasela, East Lombok, from 1990 to 2024. It aims to reconstruct the changing existence and functions of Klenang Nunggal and to explain how the Pringgasela community responded to its decline and revitalisation amid broader sociocultural changes. This study employs the historical method, consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, combined with a cultural and art-history approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with artists, community leaders, village government representatives, and local residents, supplemented by observation and documentation. The findings reveal four historical phases in the development of Klenang Nunggal: transition (1990–1999), when it emerged as a replacement for Rebana and became embedded in Sasak traditional processions; decline (2000–2010), characterised by decreasing performances and public interest; hiatus (2010–2020), when deteriorating instruments and weak intergenerational transmission brought the tradition close to disappearance; and revitalisation (2020–2024), driven by the Dongdala Festival, Sanggar Mahapati, village government support, and renewed youth participation. Revitalisation also transformed Klenang Nunggal primarily serving as musical accompaniment for traditional rituals into a marker of cultural identity and a cultural tourism attraction. Viewed through Talcott Parsons’ structural-functional framework, its survival reflects processes of adaptation, collective goal attainment, social integration, and cultural transmission. This study contributes to the historiography of Sasak performing arts by demonstrating that the continuity of traditional music is not merely a process of cultural preservation but a dynamic historical transformation shaped by community agency, institutional support, intergenerational regeneration, and the reconfiguration of tradition within cultural tourism.
