Abstract

This paper provides the result of study exploring some barriers hampering the development program of cultural tourism in East Nusa Tenggara. The materials of this study were based on data collected through field and libary research. The result of the study shows that barriers hampering the development program of cultural tourism in East Nusa Tenggara are due to the lack of society’s undestanding on the esense of culture, the lack of society’s knowledge on the signifince of culture, the lack of society’s appreciation on their own culture. This paper might be beneficial to enrich the sources of reference for the government and the society of East Nusa Tenggara in developing the programs of cultural tourism.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji karakteristik dan dinamika sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai, lambang identitas masyarakat Manggarai sebagai anggota kelompok etnik Manggarai di Flores Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur. Kerangka teori yang memayungi penelitian ini adalah teori kebudayaan dan teori perubahan kebudayaan. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif. Prosedur penelitian adalah penelitian lapangan dan kepustakaan. Penelitian lapangan bertujuan mendapat data primer sebagai data utama. Lokasi penelitian adalah wilayah Manggarai dengan lokasi utama kota Ruteng. Sumber data adalah masyarakat Manggarai, khususnya yang tinggal di kota Ruteng yang diwakili lima orang informan kunci. Metode pengumpulan data adalah pengamatan dan wawancara, yang dielaborasi dengan teknik rekam, elisitasi, dan simak-catat. Penelitian kepustakaan bertujuan mendapat data sekunder. Metode pengumpulan data adalah studi dokumenter. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan metode induktif, analisis bertolak dari data menuju konsep/teori yang bersifat lokal-ideografis berupa perian tertulis karakteristik dan dinamika sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, sistem pertanian lahan kering dalam kebudayaan Manggarai pada masa silam memiliki karakteristik khas dan khusus, sebagaimana tercermin dalam nama dan bentuk lahan pertanian, jumlah dan jenis lahan pertanian, teknik pengolahan lahan pertanian, jenis tanaman, dan taksonomi klafikasi musim. Akan tetapi, bersamaan dengan dinamika masyarakat Manggarai, fungsi kebudayaan Manggarai sebagai lambang identitas masyarakat Manggarai mengalami perubahan dalam tataran tertentu. Perubahan itu dapat disaksikan, antara lain, dalam perubahan sistem pertanian lahan kering, sebagaimana tercermin dalam fenomena perubahan berkaitan dengan nama dan bentuk lahan pertanian, jumlah dan jenis lahan pertanian, teknik pengolahan lahan pertanian, jenis tanaman pertanian, jenis tanaman, dan taksonomi klafikasi musim.

Abstract

This paper discusses the characteristics of cako marriage as the symbol of cultural identity for Manggarai society, as reflected in the meaning of the cako marriage, customary rules in the cako marriage, and the changes of social role and status in the cako marriage, in view of social anthropology which deals with the study of the relationship of culture and society. The materials are based on data collected through research which is descriptive in nature. The results of study show that the cako marriage refers to the form of marriage between a man of the elder offspring and a woman of the younger offspring. As the two families are of the same clan, the cako marriage is endogamy. Based on the customary rules of Manggarai society, the cako marriage is only permitted for a woman of the younger offspring of the third layer above. Due to the cako marriage, the social role and status change in some respect as the elder offspring acts as wife taker is known as anak wina in Manggarai language and the younger offspring acts as wife giver known as anak rona in Manggarai language. Being wife taker, the elder offspring holds lower power, or vice versa, being wife giver, the younger offspring holds higher power.

Abstract

This paper describes and explains the essence of reference and inference as the linguistic devices forming the unity of a discourse. The material of this paper is based on secondary data collected through library research and the method of data collection was a documentary study. The results of the study show that references and inferences as the linguistic devices are two external elements forming the unity of discourse that should be taken into account when someone wants to understand and interpret the meanings of the language used in a discourse of text of discourse. As such, it is required for him/her to know in more depth about the essence of reference and inference in line with their functions and significances as the external elements forming the unity of discourse.

Abstract

Makalah ini menjelaskan makna sosial dari pesta sekolah, sebuah pesta khusus yang dirancang untuk mengumpulkan uang untuk mendukung keberhasilan pendidikan bagi anak-anak, di masyarakat Manggarai. Kajian ini dilihat dari teori pendidikan dan budaya ditinjau dari perspektif sosial. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif. Makna sosial pesta sekolah dalam masyarakat Manggarai diwujudkan dalam proses perencanaan, tindakan, dan evaluasi yang ditandai dengan kehadiran banyak orang sebagai peserta dengan peran yang berbeda-beda. Makna sosial dari pesta sekolah juga ditunjukan dengan makan bersama sebagai sarana rekonsiliasi di antara mereka

Abstract

This paper discusses systematization and arbitrariness as characteristics of language as a means of communication in the life of a society as members of a speech community. The materials are based on secondary data collected through library research. The characteristics of systematization are concerned with the significances of language as a system because language has a set of rules as the frames of reference for a speech community when communicating with each other. The set of rules, as reflected in phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, make the system of one language differ from those of other languages. The characteristics of arbitrariness are concerned with relationship of two poles of linguistic sign, involving forms or signifieds and meanings or signifiers, which are based on social conventions inherited from previous generations. The characteristics of arbitrariness are beneficial to the study of both linguistics and semiotics in which language is defined as a system of sign.

Abstract

Speech is an example of expressive discourse. Speech is an interesting object of study because speech is a unit of language that contains meaning and is composed of a series of sentences, diction, and grammatical, also contextual relations. The study of written and spoken discourse consists of cohesion and coherence. This research, therefore, is designed to the researcher can identify and describe the characteristics of grammatical cohesive devices in Joko Widodo’s Speech Text at the G-20 Sessions on November 15, 2022. A descriptive method is employed in this research and data obtained were analyzed qualitatively through identification and classification. The technique used for data collection is the study of Literature and the Listen-Note Technique. The result shows that Grammatical cohesive devices include referents, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunctions. Based on the results of an analysis of Joko Widodo's speech at the G-20 Summit, it appears that all grammatical cohesive tools are used, although in different proportions. The grammatical cohesion that seems to dominate is a reference, followed by a conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis.

Abstract

The world of education in Kupang is improving to implement an education system that is considered capable of meeting global challenges. Starting from the design of curriculum, the application of English in daily life, to the learning methods adapted to the implementation of primary and secondary education in developed countries. Christian Montessori School (CHRISTMAS) is one of the International schools in Kupang. The use of English in daily life both in class and during recess at school from kindergarten, elementary school to junior high school is very helpful for children facing global challenges. The aims of this research are formulated as follows (i) to identify strengths and weaknesses of using storytelling as a strategy to teach Indonesian of CHRISTMAS elementary school Kupang in academic year 2022/2023.(ii) to identify opportunities and threats of using storytelling as a strategy to teach Indonesian of CHRISTMAS elementary school Kupang in academic year 2022/2023. The subjects of this study were the first grade students of CHRISTMAS elementary school Kupang. The Researcher collects data by observing, interviewing, and analyzing documents. After that, the researcher did a reflection of the teaching strategy. Based on the result of this research, the researcher found that there are some strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to using storytelling as a strategy to teach Indonesian to the first grade students of CHRISTMAS elementary school Kupang. So the result of this study was applied by students filling out the answer sheets first to express their main ideas. Students will learn the lesson using English in the classroom. Keywords: storytelling, elementary school, first grade students, strengths and weaknesses, opportunity and threats.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the relationship of traditional house and communal farming land in Manggaraian society. The study is viewed from the perspective of cultural linguistics as one of the new theoretical perspectives in cognitive linguistics exploring the relationship of language, culture, and conceptualization. The study is descriptive-qualitative. The results of study show that the relationship of traditional house and communal farming land in Manggaraian society is reflected in the verbal expression of Manggaraian language, Gendangn one, lingkon pe’ang ‘Drum inside, round field outside’. The forms and meanings of linguistic phenomena used in the verbal expression designate the conceptualization of Manggaraian society regarding the ownership of the mbaru gendang as the origin house of the wa’u as a patrilineal-genealogic clan living in one village and the lingko randang as common farming land belonging to the wa’u as the source of their life welfare as dry land farmers. The verbal expression is a linguistic evidence inherited from the ancestors of Manggaraian society indicating the existence of the wa’u as partilineal-genealogic clan as a house-based community whose livelihood is as dry land farmers.

Abstract

Numerous efforts have been made to improve English language learning in non-formal institutions. One of them is by developing interesting teaching-learning media. The learning media used in this program is a student final exam product which is assessed in the Intensive Reading Course, where students are asked to read continuously about one short story, then conduct it into literary elements such as characterization, storyline, etc. After this progress, creative visual learning media was created using materials like paper or cardboard equipped with attractive colors. The objectives of this program include several things; firstly, improving the English language skills of children in the Manggrove Leaf Community, secondly, through learning media, it can be integrated into mastering vocabulary and pronunciation, and thirdly, children can retell what they hear in their own words. It is hoped that the method applied will continue to increase children's efforts in creative and enjoyable learning processes in various non-formal institutions. Some things that are considered priority problems that must be resolved include first, increasing English vocabulary, second, pronunciation of English vocabulary, and third, increasing enthusiasm and motivation for learning English. The solution offered is creative and fun English learning through visual learning media.
