Abstract

Purpose: This classroom action research aimed to improve junior high school students’ conceptual understanding of geometry through the integration of visual media within a cooperative learning framework. Methodology: The study was conducted in two cycles, involving 21 students, and followed the systematic stages of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. During the pre-cycle, traditional lecture-based instruction led to low engagement and unsatisfactory academic performance, with only 42.86% of students achieving the minimum mastery criterion (KKM). In Cycle I, the implementation of visual media such as diagrams and illustrations combined with cooperative learning activities, led to a modest increase in students’ average scores and engagement levels. However, the mastery rate remained at 52.38%, indicating the need for instructional refinement. In Cycle II, improvements in media quality, structured group facilitation, and enhanced teacher support contributed to significant learning gains. The average class score rose to 80.95, and 90.48% of students met the KKM. Observations also revealed marked improvements in student activeness, collaboration, and confidence in expressing ideas. Findings: The findings confirm that visual media, when effectively integrated into cooperative learning, significantly enhances students' conceptual understanding of geometry-related content. Significance: This research suggests that visual learning strategies should be systematically embedded into science instruction to support deeper comprehension and promote inclusive, student-centered classroom environments.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of cooperative and collaborative learning in a fourth grade elementary classroom and its contribution to optimizing students social skills. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants were 25 fourth grade students with diverse academic abilities and backgrounds, supported by the classroom teacher as a key informant. Data were collected through participatory observation, in depth interviews, and limited documentation. The observation focused on group learning activities that reflected cooperation and collaboration, including task distribution, peer discussion, idea exchange, and shared decision making. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman qualitative analysis model, covering data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that cooperative learning helped students develop responsibility and structured teamwork through clear roles and individual accountability. Collaborative learning supported the growth of communication skills by encouraging open discussion and active participation. Interview results showed that students felt more comfortable asking questions, sharing opinions, and working with peers during group learning activities. Teachers also reported positive changes in student engagement and social interaction patterns. These results suggest that integrating cooperative and collaborative learning within one learning process supports the development of students social skills in a meaningful classroom context.

Abstract

Statistical thinking is a fundamental competency in mathematics education, particularly in enabling students to interpret, analyze, and make decisions based on data. One essential topic that supports the development of statistical thinking is data dispersion, which includes measures such as range, variance, standard deviation, and interquartile range. However, many elementary students experience difficulties in understanding these concepts due to abstract explanations and teacher-centered instructional practices. This study aims to enhance students’ statistical thinking skills through the implementation of cooperative learning in mathematics instruction focusing on data dispersion. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in 2025 with fourth-grade students at a public elementary school in Indonesia. The study was implemented across three cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through statistical thinking tests, observation sheets, and learning achievement assessments. The findings reveal a significant improvement in students’ statistical thinking abilities and learning outcomes across cycles, with classical mastery increasing from 61.1% in Cycle I to 83.3% in Cycle III. The results indicate that cooperative mathematics learning effectively facilitates conceptual understanding of data dispersion and fosters active engagement, reasoning, and collaboration among students. This study contributes to mathematics education research by providing empirical evidence on the role of cooperative learning in strengthening statistical thinking at the elementary level.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability refers to the capacity to solve problems through sound decision-making, which is essential for effective learning. Students must be able to think positively, logically, and methodically to address mathematical problems. Based on local cultural knowledge, this study aims to examine how high school students taught using the PAKEM model (Active, Creative, Effective, and Fun Learning) differ in their mathematical problem-solving abilities compared to those taught through direct instruction. The population of this study comprised all Grade X students at SMA Negeri 1 Tanggetada, Tanggetada District, Kolaka Regency. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 30 students each from classes X1 (experimental group) and X3 (control group) of the same school. This quasi-experimental study employed quantitative research methods. Data were collected using test instruments, and the analysis techniques applied included Ngain analysis, independent t-test, homogeneity test, and normality test. The research results show that the H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted, with a tcount of 5.239 and a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000, which is less than the alpha level of 0.05. It indicates that the experimental class taught with the PAKEM model performed better in mathematical problem-solving than the control class taught through direct instruction. Qualitative analysis showed that three students' strong potential in solving mathematical problems through the application of the PAKEM learning model. The pretest and posttest scores show significant improvement: the experimental group increased from 57.90 to 85.13, while the control group improved from 56.57 to 78.13. These results indicate that the PAKEM model, grounded in regional local wisdom, has greater instructional effectiveness than direct instruction in improving students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ critical thinking dispositions in the aspects of truth-seeking and systematic thinking in mathematical problem-solving. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving two ninth-grade students selected through purposive sampling based on high mathematical ability. Data were collected through problem-solving tasks and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using indicators of truth-seeking (identifying relevant information, evaluating assumptions, and using accurate data) and systematic thinking (organizing solution steps logically, using appropriate mathematical notation, and verifying results). Data validity was ensured through triangulation of written responses and interview data. The findings reveal that students are generally able to organize relevant data, follow logical procedures, and obtain correct answers, indicating the presence of procedural-level critical thinking dispositions. However, students demonstrate weaknesses in verifying assumptions and evaluating final results, showing that reflective aspects of critical thinking are not yet fully developed. These findings highlight a gap between procedural competence and the depth of critical thinking dispositions, where correct answers do not necessarily reflect strong critical thinking. This study contributes theoretically by emphasizing that critical thinking involves not only cognitive skills but also reflective habits that require explicit development. Practically, the results suggest the need for instructional strategies that encourage students to recheck their work, question assumptions, and reflect on their reasoning processes.

Abstract

This study investigated a new insight into the probabilistic thinking of male mathematics education students with Field-Independent cognitive style. One student with masculine male and a Field-Independent cognitive style (MLI) based on the GEFT test and a gender questionnaire, while also considering mathematical ability assessed through UTBK SBMPTN questions. From 20 students with medium-level mathematical ability, MLI was chosen to participate in a probability problem-solving test conducted at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Sembilanbelas November Kolaka. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study design. The results indicate that MLI's probabilistic thinking is highly proficient. Based on Polya’s four problem-solving stages, MLI effectively identified given information, recorded data accurately, and answered in a structured manner, although he did not explicitly write the combination formula or binomial distribution. In the "looking back" stage, while MLI did not rewrite the final answer, interviews confirmed that he had rechecked his work, verifying each step to obtain the correct probability value
