Abstract

Since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted people's normal lives across the globe, educational institutions have been compelled to embrace virtual learning. This mixed-method study aimed to investigate the teachers preparedness for online teaching at an elementary school in West Java in Indonesia and to find out the challenges they face while teaching young learners. It employed a close ended questionnaire followed by interviews to collect necessary data from seven purposively selected English language teachers based on their availability and experience in online teaching. The data demonstrated that most of the teachers in the context were well prepared to teach online. The findings entailed their mastery of necessary technical skills, prior experience and responsiveness with online teaching, commitment to carry out their duties as teachers and efficiency in time management in online teaching. However, the results also revealed a number of issues from some respondents such as limited knowledge in using different virtual media, high internet cost, lack of support from the education department, unstable internet connectivity, limited cellular broadband data, lack of skills in navigating available technology, inadequate knowledge of internet technology, unfamiliarity with online resources, and insufficient training. The research will help English language teachers, educational policymakers, and other stakeholders adopt more successful online education.

Meanwhile, in analyzing the data collected, the writer used SPSS simple linear regression (Muijs.200:143). The result of the study showed the influence of L2 student’s strategies is significantly weak towards their achievement in structure IV. While the most strategies used was metacognitive strategy. It is because so many factors influence student’s achievement, such as student’s ability, learning style, and teacher’s methodology used. Therefore, it is teacher’s task to motivate students aware of learning strategy used, so they could get well understanding.

Abstract

One approach to taking advantage of corpora in language teaching would be adding to a textbook through enriching it through employing corpus-based research. When it comes to using English for Academic Purposes (EAP) materials, the inclusion of corpora in teaching language becomes even more urgent. In the current study, the authors did their best to investigate and describe the presence of formulaic language in an EAP textbooks titled: English for international tourism: Pre-intermediate students’ book written by Dubicka and O’keeffe (2003) through a case study, and corpus-driven method as a research methodology. Therefore, this study aims to investigate to what extent the EAP course book designed for tourism titled English for international tourism (EIT) is compatible with a corpus-driven formulaic approach. Findings show that this EAP textbook falls fairly short of presenting the necessary formulas as frequently employed in tourism English. Supplementing such materials with corpora and the formulaic they provide may boost the quality of EAP education and practice.

Abstract

The role of principals as instructional leaders requires them to continuously improve their skills in designing and implementing 21st-century learning. This involves developing their digital literacy capabilities as part of technology integration. This research is a case study that aims to analyze the digital literacy capabilities of principals in Kuningan and Cirebon, Indonesia, as instructional leaders in designing and implementing 21st-century learning. The participants of this study were 20 elementary school headmasters. To collect the data, the authors used a teacher observation checklist, with the observer being the teacher in charge of the training. The results of this study showed that the headmasters, as supervisors and instructional leaders, had strong digital literacy capabilities. They were able to easily use technology, and the applications were clear and understandable to them. Furthermore, the participants found it easy to become skilled with the system, learn to operate it, and interact with it. They also showed high mental effort, required much care and attention, and found it easy to navigate and remember how to perform tasks with the system. Overall, this study highlights the importance of developing digital literacy capabilities among instructional leaders, particularly in the context of 21st-century learning. The study provides insights for educators and policymakers on how to support principals in improving their digital literacy capabilities to serve as effective instructional leaders in the digital age. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look into pre-service EFL teachers' self-efficacy beliefs about teaching English as they progress through their teaching practicum. The study's findings were gathered through a survey of 20 pre-service EFL teachers enrolled in the Faculty of Education at one of Cirebon's private universities. Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scales of 24 questions were used to gather data, which evaluates pre-service teachers' self-efficacy on three subscales: student engagement, instructional strategy, and classroom management. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine which EFL pre-service teachers had the highest and lowest levels of self-efficacy. The study's findings revealed that their self-efficacy is at a medium level, and they are more effective in terms of instructional strategy. The study of self-efficacy regarding EFL students' practicum has significance for any institution involved in building higher-quality programs for future-generation teachers.

Abstract

Reading comprehension remains a persistent challenge for Indonesian high school students, as evidenced by the country's below-average performance in international assessments like PISA. This issue is particularly evident in understanding news item texts, which require critical thinking and text-structure awareness. The present study investigates the effectiveness of the SQ3R technique—Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review—in improving students' comprehension of news item texts. Using a pre-test and post-test design with 34 Grade XI students, the results revealed a significant improvement in comprehension, with mean scores increasing from 61.47 to 81.91. The t-test analysis indicated a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05), confirming the effectiveness of the technique. The findings underscore the potential of SQ3R in enhancing comprehension through structured, sequential reading stages. Recommendations include integrating SQ3R into reading curricula and providing additional support for students struggling with text structure and vocabulary.

Abstract

Based on recent developments, artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the way second language writing is taught. ChatGPT, as a current AI tool, is seen as a potential writing assistant for students. This study explores how university students evaluate ChatGPT when writing academic papers. Employing a qualitative case study, data were collected from six female undergraduate English language education students enrolled in an academic writing course at a private university in West Java, Indonesia, through interviews, reflective diaries, and classroom observations. The findings show a shift in students’ perceptions, from initial doubts to recognizing practical benefits. Many students initially struggled to begin writing due to difficulties generating ideas or forming sentences. After being introduced to ChatGPT, they used it to draft opening paragraphs, check grammar, and explore concepts. Students reported improved ability in structuring thoughts and overcoming writer’s block, leading to more coherent writing. However, some expressed concern about overreliance, fearing it might hinder critical thinking and creativity. The study concludes that while ChatGPT offers substantial support, it should be used as a complementary tool. Educators are encouraged to guide students in leveraging AI to enhance rather than replace their writing skills.
