Abstract

This study examines the use of figurative language, specifically metaphor and personification, in the Syair Perang Siak by Donald J. Goudie. The background of this research is based on the richness of classical Malay literature, which often conveys meaning indirectly through symbolic and imaginative language. The objective of this study is to identify, analyze, and interpret the forms and functions of metaphor and personification within the text. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a stylistic approach, focusing on the analysis of linguistic forms and their aesthetic and semantic functions. Data were collected through documentation techniques by selecting relevant lines containing figurative expressions. The findings reveal that metaphor is used to represent emotional conditions, shifts in power, and social realities through symbolic associations, while personification animates abstract concepts, creating a more vivid and dramatic narrative. Both figures of speech contribute significantly to enhancing the aesthetic quality and deepening the meaning of the text. The study implies that understanding figurative language in classical literature is essential to uncover cultural values, historical contexts, and the author’s perspective, as well as to enrich readers’ interpretative and analytical skills.

Abstract

Wedding pantun is part of the oral tradition of the Malay community of the Riau Archipelago, particularly in Natuna, which contains cultural values and linguistic aesthetics. This study aims to describe the forms and types of metaphor and to analyze the figurative meanings of metaphor in Malay wedding pantun of the Riau Archipelago (Natuna) based on the theory of Gorys Keraf (1991). This qualitative descriptive research uses six pantun as data, obtained through interviews. The results show that not all pantun contain metaphors; only three out of six data exhibit the use of live metaphors. These metaphors function to convey symbolic meanings of beauty, respect, and humility before God. All metaphors found are classified as live metaphors, reflecting the cultural, social, and religious values of the Malay community.

Abstract

The development of the times and the influence of modernization have also caused a decrease in the use of pantun in everyday life. The younger generation tends to be less interested in studying pantun in depth, thus potentially causing a loss of understanding of the cultural values contained therein. According to (Sung, 2020), pantun is an important part of Malay culture that contains moral values and community identity, so it needs to be preserved and understood comprehensively. The method used in this study is the content analysis method. This method is used to analyze the content or meaning contained in the pantun text. Through this method, researchers identify, classify, and analyze metaphors contained in pantun based on metaphor categories according to Stephen Ulman. The results of the study show that in the reply pantun in the Bengkalis Malay wedding ceremony there are only 2 types of metaphors out of 4 existing types. Namely concrete to abstract metaphors and synesthesia metaphors. The following is the author's description of the research results. From the analysis carried out with a semantic approach based on Stephen Ulman's theory, it was found that the metaphors in Bengkalis Malay wedding pantuns include several types, namely concrete to abstract metaphors, synesthesia metaphors, and a small number of other forms of metaphors. Among these types, concrete to abstract metaphors are the most dominant, because Malay people tend to use real objects or activities to describe abstract life concepts, such as affection, responsibility, commitment, and hope in building a household.
