Abstract

Background: Postpartum blues is a common mood disorder affecting postpartum mothers, with potential impacts on maternal mental health and infant development. Early identification using valid and reliable instruments is essential for appropriate management. Objective: This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the Postpartum Blues Scale and identify the prevalence and risk factors of postpartum blues among postpartum mothers in the working area of the Health Center in Batam. Methods: A pilot study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 30 postpartum mothers from January to March 2024. Data were collected using the Postpartum Blues Scale, comprising 32 items across six dimensions, scored on a 0-3 scale. The instrument was evaluated for validity and reliability, and associations between variables were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. Results: The Postpartum Blues Scale demonstrated good psychometric properties (Cronbach's alpha = 0.89). The overall prevalence of postpartum blues was 70%, with mild (40%), moderate (20%), and severe (10%) symptoms. Significant risk factors included lower educational level (p = 0.032), primiparity (p = 0.041), a cesarean delivery (p = 0.045), and inadequate social support (r = 0.68, p = 0.001). The most prevalent symptoms were excessive fatigue (83.3%), anxiety about the baby's health (80%), and mood swings (76.7%). Conclusion: The Postpartum Blues Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing postpartum blues. The high prevalence and identified risk factors highlight the need for routine screening and targeted interventions in primary healthcare settings.

The evaluation was performed by comparing family knowledge and behavior before and after intervention. Results: After health education intervention, there was a significant increase in family knowledge about cigarette smoke dangers (from 40% to 85%) and implementation of ARI prevention behaviors. The family implemented smoke-free policies at home, improved ventilation, and enhanced environmental hygiene. Both toddlers showed health improvement with decreased ARI episode frequency from an average of 4 times to 1 time in the last 3 months. Conclusion: Family nursing interventions with health education approaches proved effective in increasing knowledge and changing family behavior in preventing ARI due to cigarette smoke exposure in toddlers.

Abstract

This literature review explores interventions for postpartum blues, a condition that affects up to 80% of new mothers. A systematic analysis was conducted on research published between 2010 and 2024, sourced from PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases. Of the 1,247 initial articles, 72 met the inclusion criteria following a comprehensive screening process. The findings indicate that psychosocial interventions, particularly peer support and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), provide the most substantial evidence for effectiveness. Additionally, emerging approaches, including hormonal treatments, nutritional supplementation, and technology-based support, show promising potential. The review also highlights the need for standardized outcome measures, longer-term studies, and culturally adapted interventions. The results advocate for implementing personalized, multimodal approaches and integrating these interventions into routine perinatal care. This review makes a significant contribution to evidence-based practices aimed at supporting maternal mental health during the critical postpartum period.

Abstract

Background: Prenatal education interventions are widely implemented in routine antenatal care to enhance maternal and neonatal outcomes. However, evidence regarding their effectiveness remains inconsistent across populations and intervention modalities. Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of prenatal education interventions in reducing maternal anxiety and improving birth-related outcomes. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO was conducted from database inception to January 2024. Eligible studies included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental designs assessing prenatal education interventions with outcomes related to maternal anxiety and birth metrics. Two reviewers performed screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessments independently, following PRISMA guidelines and utilising the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Results: Twenty-eight studies encompassing 5,847 participants were included. Meta-analysis showed a significant reduction in maternal anxiety associated with prenatal education (standardised mean difference [SMD] = –0.42, 95% CI: –0.58 to –0.26, p < 0.001). While significant improvements were observed in maternal knowledge (SMD = 0.65) and self-efficacy (SMD = 0.51), evidence for effects on clinical outcomes such as cesarean delivery rates and birth weight was limited and inconsistent. Conclusions: Prenatal education interventions are effective in reducing maternal anxiety and enhancing maternal knowledge and self-efficacy. However, their impact on clinical birth outcomes remains unclear, highlighting the need for further high-quality studies with standardised methodologies and long-term follow-up.
