Abstract

The prevalence of stunting in children is influenced by the state of sanitation in households. North Jayapura public health center is one of the public health centers in Jayapura City with the highest proportion of stunted children in 2020, at 26.3%. The objective of this initiative is to disseminate knowledge regarding the five fundamental principles of Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) within the domestic setting. The activity was conducted over a three-month period, from July to September 2024, within the operational scope of North Jayapura public health, the target population comprised women of childbearing age (WUS) or pregnant women (Bumil) and mothers with infants or toddlers who attended the Integrated Service Post (Posyandu). The number of target groups in this activity was 50 individuals, selected using the accidental sampling technique. The implementation of this activity employed a lecture method supported by animated images, followed by discussion and question-and-answer activities. The results of this activity demonstrated a statistically significant increase in knowledge, with an average gain of 12.0 points on a knowledge assessment of the five pillars of STBM in households, comparing the pre- and post-education groups, one statement, namely the one concerning septic tanks, has yet to achieve a satisfactory score. This is due to the fact that it is one of the methods used to treat household liquid waste.

Abstract

Poverty has a significant impact on stunting in children under the age of five from low-income families, accounting for around 18.4% of stunting cases in Indonesia. The goal of this study was to look into the factors that may contribute to the prevalence of stunting among children under the age of five from low-income families in Indonesia. The study used a cross-sectional design and data from the 2022 Indonesian National Nutrition Status Survey to evaluate approximately 112,574 children. The data was analyzed at the multivariate level in binary logistics using SPSS 26 software. The data revealed that around 24.8% of disadvantaged households in Indonesia experienced stunting, with a variety of variables impacting its frequency. These included residence variables (AOR:1.08 and 95% CI:1.08-1.09), maternal age (AOR: 1.28 with 95% CI: 1.21-1.25), education level (AOR: 1.02 and 95% CI: 1.01-1.03), marital status (AOR:1.02 with 95% CI: 1.01-1.03), Antenatal Care (ANC) (AOR:1.45 with 95% CI: 1.44-1.47), age of the child (AOR:3.29 with 95% CI: 3.27-3.31), and the sex of the infant (AOR:3.29 with 95% CI: 3.27-3.21). Seven characteristics have been identified as predictors of stunting in children under the age of five in disadvantaged Indonesian homes. Expanding targeted programs for low-income families is critical for increasing their income through comprehensive entrepreneurship training and social assistance activities.

Abstract

Background:  Diarrhea in toddlers can be more deadly compared to other ages because the percentage of fluid in the baby’s body is greater. In 2023, data from 14 health centers in Jayapura City showed that diarrhea consistently ranked among the top 10 diseases, particularly at Abepura and North Jayapura Health Centers. Purpose:  This study aims to analyze the determinants of diarrhea incidence, including risk factors, among toddlers in Jayapura City. Methods:  A cross-sectional design was applied with a sample of 192 toddlers aged 12–59 months selected through accidental sampling. Inclusion criteria were mothers of toddlers aged 12–59 months, residing in the community health center working area, and willing to participate. Exclusion criteria included toddlers with congenital or chronic diseases, mothers not serving as primary caregivers, and uncooperative respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires and processed with SPSS software. Univariate and bivariate analyses employed the chi-square test, while multivariate analysis used multiple logistic regression.   Results:  Exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.00) and maternal attitude (p=0.01) were significantly related to diarrhea incidence. Exclusive breastfeeding was identified as the main determinant, with p = 0.00 and an Exp(B) value of 4.32. Conclusion:  Exclusive breastfeeding is the key determinant of diarrhea incidence among toddlers aged 12–59 months in Jayapura City.

Abstract

Transactional sex has been recognized as a significant element hindering the reduction of drug usage in Papua, Indonesia. The national objective for drug usage reduction was established at 1.67% for 2024; nevertheless, this target remains unfulfilled. This research investigated the correlation between transactional sex and substance abuse among female and adolescent prisoners in Papua Province. A case-control approach was utilized, employing primary data gathered from May to September 2023 at the Special Correctional Institution for Juveniles (LPKA) and the Women’s Correctional Institution (LPP) in Papua. The research population consisted of 85 offenders incarcerated from 2021 to 2023. A total of 26 cases (drug users) and 59 controls (non-users) were included using total sampling, in a 1:2 ratio. Data were gathered using a modified version of the Rapid Survey Questionnaire on Injecting Drug User Behavior (SCP Penasun). Analysis was conducted using STATA version 14, employing multivariate logistic regression to identify related factors. In all, 30.6% of participants were identified as drug users according to case-control selection, rather than as an estimation of population-level prevalence. Inmates who indicated participation in transactional sex exhibited increased odds of drug acquisition (adjusted OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 0.46–5.39) after controlling for work status, past-year drug usage, and duration of use. The findings suggest a possible trend of heightened drug acquisition among inmates engaged in transactional sex, although the correlation remains ambiguous. Consequently, integrated therapies targeting both substance use and sexual risk behaviors are crucial in custodial environments.

Abstract

Measurement of Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) is one form of an indicator used to assess the status of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in pregnant and adult women. The purpose of the Community Engagement Program (CEP) is to conduct nutritional status screening on Women of Reproductive Age (WRA) through MUAC measurement in Jayawijaya Regency. The CEP was conducted in Napua District, Jayawijaya Regency, in October 2022, targeting 110 WRA aged between 15 and 49 years. The activities were carried out through data collection, community education, and the practice of MUAC measurement on WRA. The results of this program found that approximately 71% of WRA had MUAC measurements greater than 23.5 cm, and there was an increase of about 18.1% in knowledge about CED. Additionally, there was a 24.5% increase in WRA's knowledge in conducting MUAC measurements before and after the intervention. The screening also identified a small percentage of WRA with nutritional status below 23.5 cm. The education and practice of MUAC measurement were found to have a significant impact on increasing WRA's knowledge. Therefore, the CEP recommends periodic education provided by nutrition experts during every integrated health post activity and conducting door-to-door visits for pregnant women with CED. Furthermore, there is a need for an increase in the provision of Supplementary Food (SF) such as biscuits and local food.
